1997-1999 were my years of disgust. I started getting into baseball at the start of the 1987 season when I was 11 going on 12 years old. Before that I was not very interested in professional sports, but my friends that were into baseball at the time kept buzzing about Kirby Puckett (coming off his breakout 1986 season). I invested some time in the game and I was hooked. Obviously, I chose a great time to become a MN Twins fan and the game brought me a ton of joy from 1987-1994. Then the strike happened. It was a bummer, but I was 19 years old and had other interests, etc. I shrugged off the strike and was happy they were able to have a 1995 season (although abbreviated). The Twins were not that great of team in 1995 or 1996, but they had some offensive pieces that made the game fun to watch. I was sad that Puckett was not a part of the 1996 season. That was a fun offense. The 1997-1999 seasons were awful. I still caught a few games here and there, but it seemed like a waste of time. It is not very enjoyable to watch a middling AAA team playing in MLB. The pitching was as bad as it can get and in an era where most teams had a 30+HR hitter or more, we were lucky to have one guy who could hit 20HRs. 1998 was especially frustrating. The one player on that team that was exciting to watch was David Ortiz and they sent him to the minors after a few months into the season. If my memory serves me correct, he was having a pretty good year but was sent down for disciplinary reasons. My rock bottom was the David Wells perfect game, and unfortunately or fortunately, that was one of the handful of games I watched that season (Sunday was my clothes washing day). I was so angry and out of sorts. At that moment, if I was in possession of a device where I could push a button and the world would explode, I would have pushed the button.
