  1. Really? I hadn't heard anything concrete about this but it's about 5 years overdue.
  2. That was their advertising slogan during the 1977 season. Which proves it's a good name. But it's already been used.
  3. Gonzalez is maybe half a tick below Escobar on infield defense but he's played outfield enough that I have more confidence in him as a 4th outfielder than I would Escobar.
  4. Witness the 2017 Dodgers. From August 26 through September 11 they went 1-16. Mind you, they still finished at 104-58.
  5. These posts reflect something I've said before and I'll say again. The goal of the front office should be to field a major league team that can contend for the postseason and a world championship. Every year. As major league players move on, whether due to retirement, trade, or free agency, it's necessary to have major-league-ready replacements in the system. This requires system-wide success, especially in scouting and player development. This is not easy, especially for a mid-market team. Falvine are less than three years in, and it takes longer than that to truly establish this, but things appear to be trending this way.
  6. Odorizzi lost at least two third strikes to poor pitch calling. I don't recall any calls where pitches outside the zone were called strikes. That required him to throw more pitches than he should have had to throw, and I'm certain that this was a big factor in the decision to pull him after five.
  7. Now wait just a doggone minute. This username...I am the father of a Carl who graduated in 2017 and an Ole who has just finished her sophomore year. Can you top that?
  8. The pitchers know that W is one of the least important pitching stats. Berrios had long stretches on the bench between innings and had lost it as a result. Rocco had to get him out and everyone, including Berrios, knew it. It's just not a big deal.
  9. I agree, but I think it was lifted from the Strib or one of the commenters there.
  10. This might be a worthwhile strategy but I don't think I'd jump to it just yet. Let's see how things go the next few starts.
  11. Duffey came in with 2 on and 2 out in the 5th, pitched to one batter and got him out, leaving the two inherited runners on base. He then faced 5 batters in the 6th without giving up a run. I'm not sure what you feel is odd. Edit: Splash45 posted while I was typing.
  12. We need Heezy's opinion, but I have read that this type of injury takes more than a few days. I would think he'll go on the IL and Jake Cave will be in uniform again shortly.
  13. I haven't read the whole thread but I agree with a roster of the 12 position players listed in RivBri's post. If we can get by with a 12-man pitching staff then I'd actually lean toward Adrianza over Cave as the 13th player.
  14. I think it's important to have at least one reliable lefty in the rotation. I think we may have found our man.
  15. Well, as long as we're extrapolating... We are undefeated against KC and Detroit and 2-1 against Cleveland. That projects to 51-6 against those three teams. Add in Baltimore and we're 57-6. Just play .500 ball against everyone else and we're 107-55.
  16. Caution: nitpick alert. I think that 3 or fewer earned runs allowed by a starter in 6 or more innings is a good benchmark to use for determining whether he has done his job. But I wish the term quality start wouldn't have been coined for such a start. I'd rather call it a satisfactory start.
  17. If they do as well against the White Sox as against these three teams they should be in pretty good shape.
  18. Jim Kaat is 80 years old so I completely understand why his schedule of appearances is limited, but he clearly is totally with it cognitively and his vast experience and knowledge make him the best analyst we've got.
  19. My inner mathematician wishes to point out that the strike zone is a pentagonal prism with seven faces (or sides), fifteen edges, and ten corners.
  20. The good reason is that half of MLB teams can be considered northern teams. NYY, NYM, Bos, Phi, Pit, Cle, Bal, Cin, Det, CWS, ChC, Min, Col, StL, KC. Is it fair to have all those teams play lots of road games early in the season, always, every year? Probably not.
  21. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pitching to contact. It's an excellent strategy but it's not one-size-fits-all. Nolan Ryan never thought about pitching that way and he never should have. But pitchers who rely on finesse and deception, and there have been many very good ones, should try to induce less-than-ideal contact. Don't waste pitches trying to strike someone out unless the situation calls for it. That type of pitcher should have as his goal getting through an inning on two ground-outs and a fly-out in 7 pitches. I seem to remember a game that Brad Radke won with no K's. I guess he said afterward that he couldn't get anyone out.
