  1. I like this. He is older but still one of the better hitters in the league. Finally a guy you can slot in at #3 or 4 and know what you are gonna(should) get. The price to me anyway, sounds more than fair. There is nothing to not like about this deal. If he pushes out some younger guy, I'm not mad as I don't see any of those guys as long term keepers anyway.
  2. You can sell if you get something back in return. When you do as the Twins did and trade top prospects for guys that were never any good in the first place, this is what happens. Capp and John Ryan Murphy. Rather have those 2? or Ramos and Hicks???
  3. Probably because they had nothing else. But they knew what he was. At best a AAAA player, couldn't hit a lick. Look at his numbers both major and minor leagues, he's the definition of not good. And they got a guy from our system that was an athlete, took good at bats and could play a really good outfield. Also thought of as a top prospect for quite some time. We got fleeced and it was terrible.
  4. They did sell extremely low on Hicks and got back a catcher New York's front office and scouting department or whoever, knew wasn't any good. They fleeced us. Right as the guy was playing decent for us and ready to break out they dumped him for nothing at all. Same thing they did with David Ortiz. Imagine having Hicks in our outfield and hitting towards the top of the order right now! If they were going to trade him, it should have been as part of a package when he was coming through the minors.
  5. Not exciting, but if they can get him for years and 45 or so million, I'd go for it. Not sure this is the type of deal that would get him, but I think it's a pretty fair offer.
  6. Curious why the Twins didn't take a more serious run at Ramos? He signed for fairly cheap and only on a 3 year deal. With the catching situation here, I'm not sure why they wouldn't make a run at him? Injuries? Faith in the terrible Castro? Think Garver or Astudillo is the answer?
  7. They were 3 young guys that have played some dang good ball and though of as good players for quite a few years already. These weren't hope and prayer types, or waiting on someone to get good, or have a super season. They were good already. Chris Sale was one of, if not the best pitcher in baseball, they went out and got him. Aggressive. I agree about developing players. It is my hope that this new FO has the pieces in place now that this organization will finally start kicking out players again. Hopefully some high end ones at that.
  8. I get where you are coming from, but I can tell you right now. For a real championship ballclub, you have Romero, maybe Thorpe. Romero it's plain to see this guy is nasty, just needs to develop a little more. The rest are fringe major league pitchers, average stuff, hard time commanding the ball, etc. We already know this, so why are we gonna waste a season, expose them to the rest of MLB, then get nothing for them when they bomb out? Identify guys that have good stuff, that project out as being successful and trade the rest of them. Put a package together while some teams still think these guys have value. Bring them all up next year to pitch to a 6-7 ERA and their trade value is GONE. Do they throw hard? Command pitches? Have a hammer breaking ball? If not, get rid of them.
  9. You are ignoring the fact that there isn't a player on this team performed the way that Sale and Betts have or possess the talent they do. Sale was a trade that took big balls, and they got back an absolute stud for it. Betts was drafted developed and push hard and quick through their system and they saw results instantly for it. Same with Bogarts. They bought him, trained him and brought him up quickly and he was ready right away. These guys are high end. They produced right out of the gate. Twins go for middle to average guys. That list you named has Sano and Buxton on it that are/were high end guys. The rest are middling types, that a team like the Red Sox would never consider "counting on" to lead their team
  10. Rosario runs well. He plays the outfield well too. I'm not saying your idea wouldn't work, but I think the guy has plenty of speed to play a corner outfield spot, doesn't he?
  11. What do you suggest as an option to get good ballplayers in here then? Wait for AAA help and sign washed up guys and dumpster dives? Why dive for junk? Why not let your home grown guys fill those holes if you are so confident in them? Save the money and use it for high end talent, rather than spread it out on alot of middling guys. I don't get what you want either. Will some FA deals or trades fail? Yep! They sure will. What about minor league guys? How many of these fail to produce? Lots, right? I don't think anyone here is opining that the Twins need to spend huge all the time, bring in the biggest free agents, etc. People just want talented players on this team. That might mean spending some money on a free agent once in awhile. Or "gasp" trading a few of your top prospects. Imagine the return they could have had trading Buxton and Sano when they were lighting up AA? HUGE This team hasn't produced a high end pitcher since Santana and really hasn't had a bopper come out of their minor league system either since Morneau. When there is a chance to get a young stud pitcher or hitter, I'm fine trading away a A or AA guy you think has a "chance" to be a stud. I'm also fine with signing a guy to a 3 or 4 year deal for big money.
  12. I already said Buxton has work to do if he wants to be able to say these types of things and needs to play better in order to have any kind of pull within the organization. To me, he hasn't really deserved to be on the major league roster at all with the way he has hit the ball. That said, this is just another example of the Twins being CHEAP and it will probably bite them in the butt, IF Buxton turns out to be any kind of ballplayer. They need to learn how to communicate with guys, or we will keep hearing stories like this. Don't want things to sour throughout the team and make this a place where no one wants to play because of the front office and ownership "cheapness".
  13. 100%. Cruz gets on base and hits the ball a mile. He also guzzles down steroids and is good at hiding it so his old body can play for a bit yet.
  14. I would make sure he can recognize pitches and control his at bats. Don't care about what the stats say. If he is still flailing away at garbage and AAA pitchers aren't able to command and mess up down the middle, I don't care if he rakes there. Numbers don't mean a thing in AAA if you get back up to the show and MLB pitchers expose your weakness every game. He and Sano need to have better pitch recognition and not get themselves out before they are ready to do anything. So far, both guess and flail. Easy outs for a pitcher that has seen a scouting report.
  15. I'm really not sure why you say this. This Cron character doesn't inspire me at all. I look at him as another Logan Morrison, and I'm guessing that is what we will get. Strikes out alot, hits for power, no one wants him, dumpster pickup. Don't expect alot from this guy. Let him and Austin fight it out in Spring training. Put Cave in that group too. You can keep 2 of the three. None of the 3 of them are must haves. Let a couple win the job and one guy lose it.
  16. It's flat out silly to not go out and sign the 2 best relief pitchers out there in free agency. This can be done for a fairly decent price, and generally low on years. They should not be looking at guys like Soria, they should be ALL IN for Britton, Familia and Herrera, or whomever they feel are the absolute best guys out there. NOT, who is "value" or "payroll friendly". Get the best guys, period. Someone offers 3/40? Offer 3/55. Get some damn balls and bring in some studs that throw hard and strike guys out. Get the turds off your roster who just take up space and chew bubble gum out there behind the outfield fence.
  17. I don't have a problem with what they did to Buxton. He didn't really deserve a callup. I'm guessing he was feasting on fastballs in AAA for any production he had his last few weeks. His main problem is he is always guessing on breaking pitches and swinging at bad ones. My deal is why did they recall Sano and not Buxton? Sano didn't look like he was much of a different player when he came back either. Still swinging at bad breaking pitches, etc. also. To me this was kind of a double standard. Either call them both back up, or neither.
  18. I'd sign Cruz and Ramos and no to the other guys. The others are just players that will eat up payroll and give you the same type of production you can get from your own home grown guys. We don't have a bat in our system, except Sano with the type of power and onbase skills Cruz posseses. We don't have a catcher in our system period, except one that is hurt all the time and has a terrible bat. Go after the talent, leave the mediocre guys for someone else to overpay.
  19. What you are forgetting is that guys like Austin or Cron are nobodies. They are cast offs, 26th men types. They are the definition of dumpster players. If they were so valued, we couldn't get them for a song. There will be warts, large ones on both of those guys or they wouldn't have been let go for nothing. Have the 2 of them compete for the spot. The one who doesn't make it, gets relegated to the minor leagues and used in case of an injury like the other teams that let them go did.
  20. ZERO idea? Are you sure about that? I think most of us here have an idea. And by the sounds of what this article states, they have a pretty good idea also. It's not what any of us want to hear, but my guess is that one is softer than Charmin and can't be counted on, and the other is lazy as hell and won't put in the work to improve. The Twins may have backed the wrong horse with these two. I hope I am wrong. I REALLY want to be wrong, but right now, it ain't lookin good.
  21. Bottom line here. The Twins are cheap. They just are and will forever continue to be that way. We have one way of building a good team, and that is through our own system. So hold onto your hats, ladies and gents, it's gonna be a long ride. I really don't care if they don't buy anyone. I don't. But then, I don't see any need to bring in bargain guys on 1 years deals either. If you aren't going to go after anyone significant, then just use your own system to fill holes and stand firm with it. If that means Romero opens the season as your #2 or 3 starter, then so be it. Who throws hardest with the best stuff in your organization? Make him your closer. Second base doesn't need to be filled with a who-knows-if-they-will-ever-be-decent-again, type guy like they just signed. Just fill in with Gordon, or move Polanco over there and bring up one of the shortstops in your system. Half in, half out. That always seems to be the Twins plan no matter who is running the show. It kind of gets old.
  22. It wasn't a big trade though. They missed opportunities to package Hicks up and bring back real talent. Instead they dumped him at his lowest point for a catcher that is flat terrible. At some point you have to take risks. Whether that is trading your best thought of "prospects" or signing someone to a big dollar deal, or trading some of your best players for prospects you think might be something special. Always going the easy/safe way has put the Twins in the same positions they always are. Either miss the playoffs totally, or make them then get bounced right away.
  23. They haven't made any very significant trades yet, other than Odorizi(good one actually) They have given away expiring contracts for lottery picks. Not exactly risky and/or groundbreaking. Hard to really say if they have done good or not yet?
  24. It's just business as usual here in Twins territory. One year deals on mid level guys. Yippee. Just bring up guys from the farm if this is the approach. Unless those free agents are complimentary guys, then I guess whatever.
  25. I'm with you as long as the plan then is to add real ballplayers in free agency and trades. If you do as you're suggesting, but then "fill in" with Rondell White's or Ricky Nolasco's and Logan Forsythe's, you will continue to be perpetually mediocre. Sign or trade for high end guys or fill in with your own is what I would like to see. That doesn't mean you don't make some of these mid level signings, but signing mid level guys to bat 4th or 5th in your lineup, or be a top 2 starter in your rotation has got them in trouble for years.
