  1. B/c in waiting on Donaldson, others are signing. If JD goes to Atlanta, it's going to be a scramble for the FO.
  2. Moreland makes the most sense to me. Good defensive 1B compared to others listed here. He's a LH hitter so could possibly DH at times against tough RHP? Would allow Marwin to move around more like he did in 2019. Anyone know if Castellanos has ever played 1B? We know he isn't a good defensive player but is athletic enough he might be able to make the move. His bat will always play. Gonna be bad enough if they miss out on Donaldson. But if waiting for him means they miss out on others too, that makes it even worse. Kiriloff isn't on 40-man but it wouldn't be hard to make room. Would rather see him than Thames, Frazier, Bird, Zobrist.
  3. ...which could look like a mistake if things don't fall right
  4. With regards to SP help, i keep telling myself to be patient, that these guys are smarter than I am about baseball, that they know which, if any, SP prospects are ready. Then I look in the mirror and I'm rolling my eyes at Tuesday's signings. Seems like a lot of things will need to fall into place for this team to be in position to challenge the Yankees or Astros in October.
  5. So, we're assuming Dobnak is #5 starter? (Gulp) . A FA or trade brings #4? Seems like a solid, not spectacular, bullpen. It's almost Jan. 1, to early to panic. WAY too early. But I'm getting nervous that at least 2 of Smeltzer, Dobnak, Thorpe will be in the rotation on Opening Day.
  6. Live two hours from Target Field so don't get there as often as I'd like. Was 15 when Metrodome opened, so saw a lot of games there. Mother's Day 2010, walked into the ballpark through the Hrbek gate with my then 13-year old son. Perfect sunny day. Was heaven. Took a DEEP breath of fresh air and told him when I die, just cremate me and spread my ashes on the field. Great memories over the last 10 years there with my two sons and my dad. Personally, being there for Johan's HOF induction, Nathan's induction and Mauer's number retirement are right at the top.
  7. Taken individually, I think Kepler and Polanco are who we saw last year. If the ball is de-juiced, we'll likely see a regression in some power numbers, but they both are rock solid hitters now. Kepler is a good RF. Polanco's defense we all know is a bit hit-and-miss. Another 30-40 games from Garver, with maybe 20 starts at 1B, would be great. Not sure he gets the 1B starts and I doubt he catches more than 110-115. There are 3 guys I'm looking at that I feel can make a jump. 1) Berrios...No one doubts his stuff. Is it just adding strength to up his stamina so he can be strong for 200+ innings and into October? He's a Cy Young candidate if he can maintain through a full season 2) Buxton....140 games would be fun to see, wouldn't it? 3) Sano....just maintain the improvement from the last half of 2019 and be that player for a full season.
  8. Twins fans may wish the White Sox had signed Manny Machado last year. He hasn't lifted the Padres at all, and instead the Sox went shopping this year....and will be a better team for it. I tend to be patient and let the FO use all avenues to put together a club for the following season. All that said, I'm concerned. The are a position player (likely 3B) and a top starting pitcher short right now. Bargain shopping isn't going to fill those spots. Landing Donaldson would be huge. Then only one trade (SP) is necessary to round things together. Last, to be fair, we don't have any knowledge of the lengths the FO went to try and get some of the FA that have signed. Let's be realistic, these guys are "free" agents, free to choose where they want to play.
  9. ...that said, the question is "What Would You Do". I'd start him at AAA and have him on an innings limit down there with an eye toward a July call up to help the club...either as a "primary" or as a bullpen arm. My eye would be on having him ready to fill a rotation spot in 2021.
  10. One thing that plays into this is the new 26th man. Astudillo seems to be the guy most assume will be that guy. And it makes sense...have a 3rd catcher so Garver can play some 1B when Avilla catches. What if it were a Lewis Thorpe? Make Thorpe the "starter" in front of Graterol. Not sure how the lefty-then-righty aspect of that would help or hurt the two pitchers. Just a thought.
  11. Exciting to think about. immense upside and athleticism. Harder to project as always?...the rotation
  12. I thought they should've used some 6-man rotation last year for that very reason. Guys like Dobnak, Smeltzer, Thorpe fit that long man/extra starter mold.
  13. Dang. Glance at the headline and a picture of Cleveringer...anyone else get excited for a brief second?? Not nice...lol
  14. Pretty clear what's happening here. You've got the high leverage guys like Rogers, May, Duffey, Romo and the rest of them will be on the Rochester Express, burning through options.
  15. Is it weird to say that the new bench coach has big shoes to fill? I think the loss of Shelton is more important than many realize.
  16. In the interest of saving money for pitching, could an Iglesias signing make sense? Polanco to 2B, Arraez, Marwin play 3B. Sano, Garver, Marwin play 1B.
  17. Don't think it'll happen, but I'd rather see a 3B added. Sano/Marwin/Garver man 1B. And, of course, pitching.
  18. I'm not an analytics geek, but by the eyeball test I didn't think Castro was quite as good last year as he's been. This seems like a lateral move on a 1-year deal instead of something longer. So where do we set the over/under on games behind the plate for Garver? 90? 100? Seems to me he's headed for about 40 starts at 1B
  19. In any other year, if the Twins had signed 2 of the top 8 FA starting pitchers, fans would be celebrating. But b/c they both pitched for the Twins last year, we get "See, same old Twins". Minnesota sports fans are a funny lot.
  20. Haters are gonna hate, but this is a solid baseball move. Trade for Boyd, sign a guy like Gausman to man the #5 spot and go sign Anthony Rendon.
  21. I love Madison Bumgarner. He's an old school starting pitcher. His toughness would be good for other pitchers. HIs numbers away from pitcher-friendly park in SF scare me a little. I'm always cautious with guys coming from NL to AL and I'm nervous about the length it would take to get him. Also, I would just be surprised if a guy of his stature comes to Minnesota.
  22. Thanks Seth. It's articles like this that keep me coming back to Twins Daily. We're all Twins fans on here, so let's be honest with ourselves...people need to get off the Cole/Strasburg train. They simply will not come here and it has nothing do with "Cheap Pohlads". I've always been a huge MadBum fan...ask my sons. That said, I'm always leery of guys coming from NL to AL. Plus, he'll have several suitors and I doubt he comes to Minnesota. Same with Ryu. I think a more realistic rotation for this club entering 2020, and one that would immediately make the Twins the favorite in the Central, would be Berrios, Boyd (trade), Odorizzi, Gausman (I for one like Seth's idea of the team option), Pineda.
  23. I'm drinking the Kool Aid. People will say Cleveland's lineup is diminished from last year and then no Lindor. They DID bring back Santana. BUT, Jose Berrios was completely dominant. Will he pitch like this against a Boston or New York? Likely not, but he gives this team a chance to beat any team with any ace on the mound. Period. Which is humongous if they reach even the Wild Card round. People will say the lineup wasn't as explosive yesterday as we'd hoped. THEY BEAT COREY freaking KLUBER!! The lineup will be top 5 in the AL. Last, how stinking good did Taylor Rogers look?!?! Second half of last season was NOT a fluke people...we should probably give Garvin Alston a little credit for elevating Rogers. There is hope Twins Fans!!!
