  1. What's the consensus on Morrison with the glove at first base? Can he field the position well? Is he an asset at that position or a liability?
  2. LaMarre has indeed made an impact thus far. I only vaguely recall seeing his name prior to the Twins signing him, but he'll be nice insurance in AAA if we need any reinforcements during the season. Stassi also a couple of hits the other day and is another one of those "slim chance" guys who could be called up at some point during the season.
  3. I don't think you absolutely "Need" to have that ace, but it certainly provides a great deal of comfort and gives the team more confidence. I think the Astros showed that last year after they picked up Verlander. All of a sudden they looked unbeatable. And that proved to be true.
  4. Poor Pedro. He was actually having a pretty good season last year for the Phillies, hitting .348 (small sample size, but for him a high batting average and OBP) and was even playing some in the outfield. And then he was badly injured and finished for the year. I love pulling for players like him, and hope he can stick in the majors this year.
  5. Noticed that Danny Santana had a 4-for-4 game for the Braves yesterday, including a home run! Ben Revere got his first hit for the Reds (I think he signed a minor league contract, so no guarantees he will make the team), and the Reds also have Vance Worley in camp.
  6. Man, another very interesting installment. Brings back lots of fun memories. Keep 'em coming! I had forgotten about some of those trades (Salas for Niekro; Butcher and Smithson for Gary Ward). So many ex-players end up being coaches or managers, but I've never heard anything more about Shane Mack. Does anyone know what he did after retiring?
  7. I'm one of those "old school" guys who are floored/gobsmacked/amazed at the high salaries the players are commanding nowadays. I know, I know: it's the nature of the times and the economics of the game today. But still ... wow! All that said, it DOES make sense for the Twins to try and extend Buxton as soon as they can. In my mind, he ranks as the team's most valuable player for the next decade.
  8. Gotta give Gibson credit for having a good attitude and putting such a difficult process in perspective. Hope he can put up those better second-half numbers the entire season this year.
  9. Well, it's obviously not an easy decision for the front office. There is no denying that Dozier has been very valuable to the Twins, especially the past two seasons. But given his age, the potential length of a new contract, and the quality of the prospects coming through the system who can replace him .... I'd say "Thanks For Everything" and let him pursue his free agent dreams.
  10. I'll be curious --- and hopeful --- to see how Duke does also. Reading about him, and how he uses different arm angles when pitching, makes me think he'll have the ability to fool a lot of batters.
  11. Oops, my mistake on that one. For some bizarre reason I wrote Gibson when I meant Hughes. Time for me to cut back on this beer consumption!
  12. Speaking of Kohl Stewart, is he definitely still planning on pitching in the Twins system this year? And if so, which level? As for Trevor May, I had hoped he'd be ready to make some Spring Training appearances. Did he have another set-back or was putting him on the disabled list expected or possibly used as a strategy to get someone else on the 40-man roster?
  13. I still have mixed feelings about the signing, but I enjoyed reading that article. Thanks for the link. All things considered, I think it's a big plus to have a guy like Rodney on the team, one who plays with joy and passion and isn't afraid to show it. More power to him!
  14. Goodrum got two more hits for the Tigers, including his second homer of the week! Where did that power come from? One of those heralded new launch angles? Ben Revere got signed by the Reds but haven't seen his name in a box score yet.
  15. I think your hunch could be correct. It's early days yet, but if Gibson and Sanchez both look healthy and posting respectable numbers, I could see them both in the rotation to start the season. And for me, Gibson is the biggest shocker. I didn't think he had a chance after his multi-setbacks the past few years, but I hope he proves me wrong.
  16. I also agree: very good article. Hopefully, Polanco can match his second-half numbers from 2017 for the entire coming season. Remember how down on him people were earlier last summer? And then he caught fire. I hope everything clicked and the fire continues!
  17. As nice as it is to have Grossman putting up good OBP numbers, I still can't see him bringing back much in a trade. Better to keep him than Vargas at this point.
  18. And Buddy Boshers is in camp with the Astros. Just our luck; with a change of scenery he may be like Swarzak and turn out to be a keeper for another team.
  19. Imagine if both Hughes and Sanchez have a bunch of stellar spring training outings? Things could get wonderfully weird --- in a good way --- in trying to determine the starting rotation to start the season.
  20. I know it's only the first week of ST games, but it's still fun to see these box scores and some of the familiar names. Someone mentioned Niko Goodrum, now with the Tigers. He has 2 more hits yesterday and is now batting .545. Yeah, that won't last, but hope he can make that club. The Nationals have both Kintzler and our old pal Tommy Milone in camp. Milone pitched 2 scoreless innings yesterday! And Atlanta has both Kurt Suzuki (another hit yesterday and he's hitting .750!) and Danny Santana. Thinking about the Angels, does anyone know if is Alex Meyer injured again or in their camp? And is Nolasco still around?
  21. And then Burger went and got injured and is already out for the season!
  22. Yeah, plenty of good arms lost in the past year, but as others have noted, the health issues were the deciding factor. Can't lose any sleep over it, these things are so unpredictable. Thinking about Mark Portugal also reminded me of another pitcher who seemed to thrive after he left Minnesota: LaTroy Hawkins. Of course, he was mostly a starter during his days with the Twins, but did much better after he was used in relief.
  23. Daniel Palka, now with the White Sox, had a hit in their game yesterday.yesterday. Wonder if he has a chance to make that club? But I tell you, looking at that box score and the names of some of the Chicago players, made my stomach rumble: Delmonico, Burger, and Danish!
  24. Yeah, we'll all be anxiously waiting to see if Morrison can replicate his performance from last year, which keep in mind was FAR above anything he had previously produced. Was his 2017 production a freaky outlier, or the sign that he has finally matured and figured it all out?
  25. I can't see either Vargas or Grossman having much trade value at all to other teams. Too many other players with similar skills still looking for jobs. I'd imagine one or the other, or both, being put on waivers if there is a numbers crunch by the end of spring training.
