  1. Bring back Nick Punto! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously though, I hope Sano is healthy and ready for a full, productive season. And I think that will happen. But if all else fails I'm confident enough with a mix of Gonzalez, Adrianza, and/or Astudillo being able to handle the hot corner.
  2. I'm not sure this qualifies as some sort of breaking news ... or even important news. Not to make light of the team's decision. Obviously, Berrios deserves to be named the opening game starter. Kudos to the kid. But what was the purpose of announcing this decision the first week in March? What's the urgency? I'm baffled. The only thing I can figure is that the team wants to make sure that Berrios knows that he's important to them, and ... ahem ... maybe we can get that contract extension settled this month while we're at it. Otherwise, not really a surprising or earth-shaking announcement.
  3. Another guy that's already been used in the bullpen a couple of times in the past week is Justin Nicolino, who pitched for the Marlins last year. Don't know much about him. Anyone out there seen him pitch? What are his strengths? Does he stand a chance of making the Twins' opening day roster?
  4. That's what I had assumed too, which was why I was surprised to see Gonzalez listed as the primary backup option at first in this article. Not to say that would be a bad thing, but I was just puzzled by that choice.
  5. As a baseball traditionalist, I hate the idea of using a pitch clock. But I also have to be a realist and I think it may become a permanent part of the game in the not too distant future. The times they are a-changing (apologies to Mr. Dylan) and I think if baseball wants to include a younger demographic as fans (those with shorter attention spans!), then they are going to have to make this and a few other changes to shorten the length of the games. Sigh. I don't want that to happen, but I just think it's inevitable.
  6. I agree with Birdwatcher; that was a very good interview, Seth! Interesting to read more about Jeffers and his mindset. I'm excited to have him in the organization. I hope he adjusts and makes quick strides and can join the big league team in the near future. It will be nice to have options like him and Rortvedt behind the plate in a few more years.
  7. Everything I've read about Marwin Gonzalez focuses on his versatility, but how much first base has he actually played the past two years? In my hazy recollection, he was always more of an outfielder that could also play the infield without embarrassing himself. But what's his glove like at first?
  8. I have to say that I feel a bit "ho hum" about this signing too. I don't hate it, and look forward to seeing what Gonzalez can add to the team. Looking at his versatility and production the past two years, it seems like a solid move by the Twins. But I still wish they had used the money for a starting pitcher or another strong arm to add to the bullpen.
  9. I doubt Kimbrell is a realistic hope at this point, but then again, I haven't seen his name linked to any other team. As for the arms in camp, I don't have a clue. Let 'em do their stuff and see what happens. I'm just anxious to see if Pineda is actually a real person and will pitch for us in some capacity this year.
  10. And I hope he tears the cover off the ball against the Yankees ... and the Red Sox ... and the Indians ... a few more teams too. For some reason I don't think he'll have too hard a time batting against the Orioles.
  11. Lots of question marks at this position; wondering if Castro can bounce back and be productive after his injury, and if Garver has no lingering side effects from his concussion and can contribute with more than bat. I love having Astudillo as insurance, not only behind the plate but at other positions too. But my worry is that after the Gonzalez signing as a "super utility" player, Astudillo won't be seen as "essential" by the brass and will be sent to AAA to start the season. Just for team morale and fan excitement, I'd like Astudillo to be on the club from opening day till the very end.
  12. I'm guessing it will be a pitcher that is the pick as your Sire" of the camp this year. I'd also agree with DocBauer, thinking it may wind up being either Collins or Morin.
  13. My sad prediction: one of those first basemen will get injured the first week of March, making this decision a whole lot easier. And not a one of them will hit 20 homers all season.
  14. I know he's put up good numbers so far, but I'm still not sold on Larnach as a top prospect. But maybe it's just because I have this bizarre lack of confidence in players named Trevor.
  15. Very good article, and some interesting responses too. I've always thought Thorpe had lots of potential, but until I read this piece I wasn't aware that he didn't truly have an "out" pitch. Hmm. Hopefully, the pitching coach can help him to work on his slider, as some of you suggested. And yeah, he''s still young and doesn't have a lot of mileage on his arm after the long rehab period, so I'm still optimistic.
  16. Another very good interview Seth. Very interesting to read his comments about the injury and the long road back. Not a player I was familiar with before, so this helps my overall knowledge.
  17. An exciting young pitching prospect? Let's be patient and hang on to him! From everything I've read so far, he could turn into a solid MLB pitcher in the coming years. Please, please, please let this happen ... and happen with the Twins. .
  18. I'm not convinced that either is 100% yet either, but then again we still haven't started spring training. And as much as I like Astudillo, I'm not sure he is the best Plan B as a starting catcher either. I'd rather see him as a backup or in a multi-position utility role, or even as DH on occasion.
  19. Generally, I tend to have the same opinion; spending big money on multi-year contracts on relief pitchers is playing with fire. That said, Kimbrel seems like a relatively safe bet. I wouldn't mind the Twins overspending on him.
  20. I can't help you on the pronunciation, but I think he has one of very best names in baseball!
  21. I like the signing too. And yes, still waiting for either a better quality starter to solidify the rotation, and/or a strong new arm in the bullpen. The wait continues.
  22. Good article! Some thoughtful, intelligent, and encouraging responses from those various players, especially Kohl Stewart. Here's hoping the right attitude and preparation translates into good results this season.
  23. I think that is very true, especially the last sentence. The Twins will never be able to compete with the elite money teams like New York and LA in attracting big name free agents, so we need to have some other qualities to entice them. What would work? A great manager and coaching staff? The chance to play with some great young talent? Free ice skating perks in the winter?
  24. Of that bunch, I think Brad Brach would make the most sense for the Twins. Nobody else really lights my fire. But please stay away from Bud Norris. Yes, he's become a decent reliever in the past couple or years after some atrocious years as a starter, but he still scares me.
  25. Very interesting and informative article! I'm intrigued by some of these minor league pitchers such as Stashak, Smeltzer, and Alcala. As much as I'd like to see another veteran arm in the bullpen (one with some upside as opposed to another Belisle type signing), I'd also urge the front office to promote some of these prospects who are putting up good numbers in the minors. Time to see what they got.
