  1. To be fair, in basketball the peace was obtained at the price of some pretty heavy-handed legislation. Every game is now officiated as if a city-wide riot could break out at any minute Technical fouls for the direction you look, and special time-outs to categorize fouls so that we can extinguish that retaliatory spark. Even football deemed it necessary to define a legal celebration. In that light, I see baseball as unique in that they have left HR celebrations up to the players (so far...and on a relative basis). I think that's a good thing. Although, perhaps it could be argued that a rule defining a legal HR celebration would reduce the retaliatory dust-ups and at the same time not become a total joke (NFL). Currently, I'm afraid to find out.
  2. I see what you're getting at. But my challenge would be that people (not directly referring to Van) too often apply their distaste for the 'unwritten rule' mentality selectively. They hate it when it's applied to the hitter celebrating a HR, yet they don't necessarily consider the thousands of times other 'unwritten rules' smooth out the game. I'm immensely glad base runners run the based way less aggressively up by 10 in the 8th...I love it that the game doesn't momentarily stop every time a pitcher blows a batter away on three pitches so we can watch the pitcher flip his glove. Why is professionalism and respect the better choice in those situations, but not when a home run is hit? Again, celebrate when you crush one. Killebrew walked half-way to first base back in 1964. But you do so within the framework of how your peers will interpret what you're doing. Imperfect (see the Dozier/Molly example above)...but better than legislation, even in the cases where you could legislate...IMO.
  3. Let the professionals determine what is professional. That's not bad or dumb.
  4. With liberties come responsibilities, (and consequences). The batter asks himself, do I want a fastball in the ribs next opportunity? Do I want to watch the pitcher celebrate every time he strikes me out? Within that framework, the batter celebrates however he wants. The players police themselves on this which is the way it's always been. And it's never been perfect. The embellishment of the crushed home runs was not invented by Latin (or otherwise) players of the 21st century. And it's easy to blame the hitter or the pitcher when the self-policing results in a dust-up. But we're far far removed from the intensity of the situation on either side of the equation.
  5. It's funny how everyone assumes Mauer is not a trade candidate. Why? It's got to be either because he's not worth anything or because he'd nix any deal? He would be THE classic example of a rental that could return immediately to the renter (assuming both parties like the idea). In the event that the Twins are sellers, they would go to Joe first as Joe has the no-trade. He could kill the potential deal in it's tracks...in the event that he didn't feel a 3-month commitment was worth a chance at his first WS.
  6. In the parallel universe where it could actually happen, I'll take Harper. I think his 'on' years will continue to be bigger than Machado's 'on' years. If Machado was an above-average SS...and could be expected to stick there for another 3-4 years...I'd probably go the other way.
  7. Is it just my imagination or might Jaylin Davis be creeping into the picture for 2020/2021?...(depending upon what happens with other organization outfielders that are ahead of him, of course) If you imagine that he's one year younger than Wade (actually 6 months younger), then he's played the same levels as Wade at the same age as Wade, and his numbers have been only moderately inferior to Wade's....pretty much centered on inferior BB and K rates. But meanwhile, Davis is making progress with the K%, he swings the bat right-handed, and presumably has a good arm (based on the preponderance of his starts being in RF). This isn't a Davis/Wade comparison...Wade started out miles ahead of Davis and remains way ahead of him, obviously...but it's starting to seem like Davis might have a shot, which would be quire remarkable given his story and draft status.
  8. Nope. It's a risky bet that revenue, in the long term, won't track with attendance. And the attendance picture is not stellar by any stretch. And the rating pictures are holding their own...but in an increasingly competitive and fragmented market.
  9. Agreed, looking at current trends. The other (actually related) reason citing current revenue misses the point: Attendance is declining. Attendance is your leading indicator of health. In the long term revenue growth will track attendance growth (or lack thereof). Baseball can act now when the game is simply showing some unfavorable symptoms, or they can stick their head in the sand and wait until it's kinda too late to recover.
  10. The game is not going to grow via 'insiders' that played the game and enjoy the technical aspects of the hitter/pitcher match-up. I grew up with that attitude to watching baseball as well, but even I am not going to be interested in watching 3:15-3:30 games with endless pitching changes and a dearth of balls in play. There are good reasons that the game has become 'different', but I don't see how the outcome is anything other than bad, and needs to be addressed aggressively.
  11. I would think the Brewers have grown more desperate over the last 2 weeks. It will be interesting. So many moving pieces including how the FO values Escobar and Gordon, Sano's immediate future, etc. I remain of the opinion that the 2018 team is not worthy of any short-term decision making of any kind.
  12. Putzing in the yard with the radio on, when the Twins made a mini-threat in the 9th, Provus made the comment “and a lot of fans are still here!”...as if the idea of fans sticking around for the 9th inning of a tie game was extraordinary...an afternoon game at that. But, he’s right in this case. The 3rd out of the 9th inning was recorded at 4:18 minutes. Even without the bench-clearing shenanigans, this was 9 innings in over 4 hours. Embarrassing for baseball.
  13. Unwatchable. (But I’ll have it on in the garage.) (:
  14. Another reason to carry more pitchers on the active rosters and make more pitching changes? Just what baseball needs right now. You’re statement is relevant.
  15. Agreed with having a position player pitch in the 9th. (Assuming you have a plan for the arm or two you saved.) I could not care less about 14-6 vs 19-6. Having said that, why should a game against an offensively challenged club like the Rays have to get to that spot in the first place? In-game bullpen moves and bullpen management have been poor during Molitor’s entire tenure. Not a strength at all. And the FO has to take at least some of the blame for the bullpen roster management (and Belisle).
  16. See above. Thrylos gives a great summary of the youngest Twins starters.
  17. Pitching about 5 innings every 7 days. You would think they would want to change this very soon if they think he’ll be that accelerated. It’s exciting to think that the Twins could have a 20 year old starter. Can’t remember the last time that happened.
  18. Just, FYI....Mike Sixel had started an on-going forum/thread "Fangraphs (and other national publications) on the Twins". And he had called this article out a few days ago in that thread. Nevertheless...this is an interesting analysis/view of the changes he has been making to the approach. I'm high on Baddoo. A sleeper as he was injured his senior year of high school and declined the college route, so was seen as quite a risk...and slid in the draft a bit because of that.
  19. I think it's extremely unlikely...but for the sake of argument... If they have plans to do that, they need to trade Gordon while they can get a return, right? To me, signing both would be a statement on what the organization thinks of Gordon. (Unless you're signing them for one, maybe two years...which I guess is always possible, but again unlikely.)
  20. It's the kind of trade the Twins should be considering, though. This particular one doesn't seem to be likely to make you stronger in 2019...but after that? Almost no matter what roster decision is being considered for 2019, it seems it has to start with the question, what will Buxton and Sano be?...or at least some base-line assumption regarding what they will be.
  21. Really aggressive on Graterol, but I don't think there's much arguing the upside. His video does look nice...looks strong and athletic, and obviously the velocity. The risk and distance to the major leagues has him lower, IMO. I'm high on him, but not quite that excited yet. One thing that would help (in terms of how I look at him at this point in time) is if we were seeing him handle a realistic workload. And two years removed from the surgery, we're not seeing that yet. I'm not suggesting this is, in and of itself, an indication of an issue...I'm saying it's tough to get a good sense of his trajectory when he's sitting at one season of 40 innings and another (this season) where he's sitting at 50 innings in the middle of July. I imagine by next year (hopefully) we'll start seeing him handling a regular workload and, at the same time, facing tougher competition.
  22. Maybe fits in that “be careful what you wish for” category?
  23. Controversial SABR-driven approach to improve launch angle has Buxton batting with his feet. He fouled one off his hand.
  24. You mean if I get this, I get 10 deducted from my Warning Points?!
