  1. I never said it was unworthy of discussion. I said it was unworthy of excitement and/or dismay. I've been posting on baseball message boards for 15 years. Somewhere around 1-3 times a season, a player is traded or let go and people tear at their hair over the deal. Once has that player turned into something meaningful within a reasonable time frame. A certain DH for the Red Sox. I think we all know his name. So, yeah, you go through this dog-and-pony show enough times, you start to roll your eyes. If you take offense to that, so be it.
  2. Miguel Sulbaran is a 20 year old in A ball. He's 5'10" and sits at 90-91 mph. Scouting reports suggest that he is at or near his ceiling. The Dodgers gave him up for Drew Butera. The Twins, after seeing him last season, gave him up for Nunez. Is it possible that Sulbaran turns into a good MLB player? Sure. You can say that about any player in the minors. Everyone has a "chance". It's incredibly unlikely that he turns into anything. Yes, let's not exaggerate... You're not just saying you don't like the trade. You're exaggerating and basing decisions on a small fragment of information. Maybe the Twins know Nunez and like him. Maybe Sulbaran is a royal pain in the ass. Maybe his arm is shot. Or maybe it's just a bad trade. Any of these are possible, I'm just not quite sure why anyone would get too excited and/or down about a move like this one. Was it puzzling? A bit. Will any of it matter? Probably not. It's fine to have an opinion. It's also fine for some of us to roll our eyes at the never-ending grief over players who will never meaningfully impact an MLB roster.
  3. I have a hard time believing he's even adequate defensively when you can almost read the gag reflexes from the authors that are typing the scouting reports on Nunez's defense. The Twins put themselves in a bad situation by not finding a guy during the offseason who could actually play shortstop at the MLB level. I don't really understand the acquisition of Nunez because he's so flawed defensively... But hey, maybe the Twins see something there and if they want to give it a shot at the expense of a 5'10" out-of-shape player they don't seem to like, well... *shrugs* I guess that's a fair deal. I don't know for sure because I've seen neither Nunez nor Sulbaran play a game. I'd like to think the Twins have and will defer to them micro-managing their roster, equipped with knowledge none of us have on hand. But again, in the end, there's at least a 95% chance none of this will matter in the slightest bit. Getting upset over deals like this seems like the very definition of "missing the forest for the trees". Too busy getting upset about a C- prospect in the low minors to notice that the Twins don't have a shortstop or corner outfielders or that the top two prospects in the organization have yet to play a regular season baseball game.
  4. I lived in LA for years. At one point, the Dodgers had Scully announcing. The Angels had Hudler. It is not humanly possible to have a larger discrepancy between announcing talent in the same city.
  5. What does Alex Presley have to do with any of this? If you're suggesting that I was somehow in favor of cutting Presley, you're barking up the wrong tree. Personally, I think Presley and Mastroianni are basically the same guy, except that Presley was already on the roster. The thinking that releases Presley just to replace him with Mastrioanni is more than a little baffling because that's where we all knew we'd end up sooner or later. It seems to me like some people confuse being critical with critical thinking. I am apathetic, not in favor of everything the Twins do. I simply do not care about the 25th man on a roster chock full of what *should be* 25th men. I don't get upset about the reshuffling of deck chairs and marginal prospects. I do not get riled up over roster decisions made on the 10th of March. I do not care about Miguel Sulbaran. The best thing he ever did for the Twins was get Drew Butera off the roster forever. When the Twins traded Wilson Ramos, I hollered at the skies for a good month. Wilson Ramos mattered. Trading JJ Hardy, that mattered. Joe Benson doesn't matter. Eduardo Nunez doesn't matter. Miguel Sulbaran doesn't matter. But hey, feel free to gnash your teeth about it, I suppose.
  6. Ugh, wrist injuries. They always seem to turn out worse than you hoped and take too long to rehab. Oh well. I don't think most of us were counting on much from Josh this season anyway.
  7. And my point is that I don't really care about the trade. I've never seen either player actually play baseball. The Twins obviously didn't like Sulbaran for whatever reason. They see something in Nunez, though I'm not really sure what that is. At the end of the day, the likelihood of any of this mattering one bit is pretty low. I'll reserve judgment about this entire situation until something comes of it, which is unlikely to ever happen at all. Unless we want to start talking about Joe Benson again. That was fun. These aren't even marginal prospects we're talking about here. Most of us haven't seen either of them play a significant amount of baseball, enough to make a declarative statement about them as a player. I'm not sure what there is to really get upset about. Teams make these kinds of moves all year, every year.
  8. So far, that "targeting" has yielded Drew Butera and Eduardo Nunez in return for the mighty Sulbaran. The only things that are head-scratching about this entire scenario: 1. That the Twins EVER thought Florimon was an acceptable starter in MLB 2. Why people suddenly care about a 5'9" pitcher that showed up to camp 30 lbs overweight, a guy they traded for Drew-freakin-Butera 3. Again, Drew-freakin-Butera I don't like Nunez. I don't care about Sulbaran, really. I can understand the front office's desire for MI depth but come on, this should have been addressed four months ago and I'm pretty confident in saying that Eduardo Nunez is just a different shade of lipstick for the pig that is the Twins' MLB shortstop situation. But I see no reason to get upset about the "loss" of Sublaran, either.
  9. We all looked at Jason Bartlett's March and then chuckled and/or gnashed our teeth over his .250 OPS in 3 ABs. Pedro Florimon currently has a .233 OPS, which is good for a -30 OPS+.
  10. That screen will occasionally pop up. It's an error screen for our security service and CDN. We have zero control over that screen but thankfully, its appearance should be very rare.
  11. Yeah, if the user is not logged in, the device will resort to using local cookies in place of the database tables.
  12. It's unlikely he reaches that number. It would take nearly 2 1/2 seasons of 70-92 play to reach the .500 mark and should that happen, Gardy will be long gone before that point.
  13. It's pretty funny that we all thought his BA would rise and his SLG would dip this season. It still might but heh.
  14. Their OPS+ are similar but Joe has a considerable advantage in OBP, the more valuable of the OBP/SLG duo. Oliva was more like Puckett than Mauer.
  15. Oliva would be in the hall if not for a freak injury and should probably be in the hall anyway. I'm not really sure how that makes the other side's case. He was absolutely an elite hitter before the injury. Also, Oliva hit a lot more homers than Joe but didn't get on base at nearly the same clip. They aren't really alike as hitters outside of BA and even those numbers aren't terribly similar.
  16. Was Rod Carew a great hitter? I really don't understand why we don't accept that not making an out is the key to offense. Yeah, some hitters don't make outs AND hit homers. They're rare.
  17. All you have to do is read one little line from Parker's excellent Colabello article to know all you need to know about Joe Mauer's "leadership".
  18. It is flat-out embarrassing for any rational human to twist that PA into a detriment. The guy had a double stolen and STILL turned it into a walk. What, and you're complaining that he walked it off? Brain hurts.
  19. Don't use either. And yes. I used one of those. I apologized for it.
  20. Okay, I will apologize. I was a bit aggressive but honestly, I can't see how anyone doesn't acknowledge the greatness of Mauer. I'll bow out now. I said my piece.
  21. And that's fine but the numbers simply do not back you up, particularly in the context of this article. Again, math. Anecdotal arguments
  22. Only, no. MOST IMPORTANT, yes. I wish people didn't suck so hard at numbers. Math is not your enemy, folks. Embrace it.
  23. So congratulations, Joe. You are elite at the most important thing in baseball. I cannot understand how people are so damned dumb not to see the statistics drawings them in the face. This isn't buried in a basement stuff, this is commonly available stuff. Getting on base, good. Not getting in base, bad. Again, people who criticize Mauer just don't bother to understand the modern game.
  24. Absolutely. His value has taken a hit due to position change. I'm not sure why that means he should become a different player, though. He has gone from great to very good. I'll live with that. Most defense-oriented players move to a less demanding position in their 30s.
