  1. I don't see them winning more than 84 games.
  2. I often leave the negative out of my posts, choosing not to talk about a player/manager/situation rather than pile on to the argument. It's only when I see a player with such a glaring flaw that I chime in and debate those who predict improvement or even the status quo (eg. Pedro Florimon). For the record, I expect Suzuki to regress, though hopefully not back to his 2013 numbers. I expect Escobar to regress but I'm so damned happy that Florimon is gone that I won't complain about it. I expect Gibson to either start missing bats or regress badly. When he comes back, I expect Fuld to post Hicksian numbers, though I'm okay with that (hopefully he'll be a tick above Hicks in the stats department). I expect Matt Guerrier to spontaneously combust on the mound any day now. Jared Burton has a decent chance of re-combusting any time now. Danny Santana is the very definition of smoke and mirrors. I don't see how he can keep it up. I think that's everybody.
  3. Except that I didn't do that. A lot of guys underperformed in April. A lot of guys overperformed in April. Many from both camps are gone. I hope to see more follow soon (hello, Jason Kubel). Notice that I stayed well away from the Colabello conversation in April except to say "great story". That had train wreck written all over it. I feel Suzuki is due to regress. I hope I'm wrong. I feel Escobar is due to regress, though probably not to the point of being unacceptable. I hope I'm wrong. There's a difference between me not bringing up the regression candidates (especially ones who are no longer on the team) and not expecting some players to regress.
  4. Nothing about Brian Dozier is smoke and mirrors. The guy turned into a different player the day he changed his swing in May of 2013 and hasn't looked back. He now looks like the guy he was in the minors, only with man muscles (which is a surprise to almost everyone). I was bullish on Dozier in July of last season and every day, he just keeps confirming that he's a different guy who isn't going to regress.
  5. Where did I predict improvement? I said they all underperformed in April and performed more in line with what was expected in May, excluding Hughes... and any regression by Hughes is likely to be offset by improvement from Nolasco, who is well below his career norm at this point. Sure, all of those pitchers could turn into pumpkins but outside of Gibson, I see no reason to believe that to be the case.
  6. I don't understand this thinking, honestly. Deduno, when healthy, was better than Correia last year. He's better than Correia this year. Meritocracy! Reward the guy who has pitched well, discard the guy who hasn't. edit: Upon re-reading this, it appears you may have typed "Deduno" when you meant "Correia".
  7. While I'm not against signing free agents, neither of those players are very good this season. Garza has only been marginally better than Kevin Correia and there's a very good chance that Ellsbury's contract becomes a laughing stock of baseball within a year or two. I've been saying it for ten years and it amazes me that teams still do it: the dumbest thing you can do in free agency is sign a speedster in his late 20s to a long-term deal. Ellsbury currently has a .696 OPS outside Yankee Stadium and a .726 OPS overall. All for the low, low price of $153m.
  8. It's possible. I'm mostly indifferent on Gardy. I think he does some things right, others wrong.
  9. Over .500? I'm not sure about that. Close to .500? Yeah, I think that's possible. And I don't think this team has the horses to compete at the 90 win level it requires to win a WC spot. I'll be very happy if they simply stay in the WC race through July.
  10. Tomorrow is the big day. Post your comments, thoughts, and player breakdowns here in preparation for tomorrow's draft. 11. It is. I wish the American people would wake up and realize that.
  12. Boy, I couldn't disagree more. If Ryan has just one strength, it's acquiring and hoarding young players during a rebuild and showing patience with them as they progress through the system. On the other hand, I question whether he's the right man for the job when a team is actually contending and needs to move prospects for vets and needs to sign free agents to push the organization to the elite echelon of baseball.
  13. Why does everyone want to get rid of Guerrier? He's striking out a batter almost once per three innings.
  14. I don't find this surprising at all. There's virtually nothing that a corner outfielder has to do that a centerfielder doesn't have to do better and more often... Maybe playing balls off a wall. That's about all I can think of that a corner guy has to do more often than a CF. And that's not a terribly difficult skill to pick up on the fly (and it's not as if CF never have to play balls off the wall).
  15. It's a running joke. For five years, people have been bundling Duensing into trade packages for good players. It's more than a little absurd.
  16. Dozier's 2014 OPS is .791. Dozier's OPS over the past 365 days is .779. He's not overperforming. This appears to be who he is. No arguments about Suzuki. Thankfully, the Twins have Pinto just waiting to take ABs from him. They're not the April pitching staff. Every guy except Gibson underperformed. It's very unlikely that we see much regression from the rotation without injury. Hughes might slide but Nolasco will probably improve. I really don't see anything that can pull the rug out from under this team without several injuries, Dozier and Hughes being the key guys at this point. Even if the rotation falters, the AAA rotation should be able to pick up the slack. We couldn't say that last season. What the Twins have this season and didn't have last season is redundancy. The rotation should be fine. Catcher should be fine. The outfield is rounding out and if Rosario can get back on track, there's a little backup there as well. The big problem right now is the infield, which could be devastated by an injury to Plouffe or Dozier.
  17. I don't necessarily agree with that. If Deduno continues pitching around a 100 ERA+ clip, he has value. Despite his age, he's still not even arb eligible. Teams won't give up a lot for him but they'll give up something for a 30 year old with a 100 ERA+ making $1m a season and under team control.
  18. Unfortunately, I have the feeling that in this election cycle, we're gonna get screwed by both sides on net neutrality. What we need to happen is for Google, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu to step up and square off financially against Comcast, Time Warner, Verizon, and AT&T. Combined, the internet titans have the money to slap the ISPs into place.
  19. It's only proactive if Deduno implodes. If he continues pitching well out of the rotation, then it's marginalizing a guy's value. I'm not against making that move in July if it needs to be made but I don't see a reason to do it right now (and it seems you don't really disagree with that).
  20. Very true, but even last year you could see the team winning early through smoke and mirrors. The pitching was awful. That isn't really the case this season. The pitching staff is better and young players are starting to emerge as legitimate starters going forward. And all of this happened while Joe Mauer played like Juan Castro.
  21. Eh, on a Jim Thome-type deal it's not a bad flyer. Though it's unlikely Josh is going to accept that deal.
  22. Maybe it's just me but I don't mind Provus. Then again, my expectations for announcers are pretty low. I consider most to be pretty bad at their jobs, excepting the greats like Scully.
  23. I agree that's likely where Deduno ends up given his age and stuff but he has continually defied the odds as a pitcher. As long as he's producing, he should continue to get chances to start. So far, he has been an adequate back of the rotation guy for the Twins and IMO, should continue to get opportunities to fill that role until he is no longer capable of doing so or is traded. I don't think FIP and xFIP are good markers for Deduno. He has continually shown the ability to induce weak contact and is therefore punished by those statistics.
