  1. If Berrios continues pitching the way he has thus far, there's no way he comes to Minnesota in 2017. The Twins, for all their pitching promotion faults, have sent Berrios through the minors quickly. It's pretty obvious they like the kid quite a bit, so much that they gave him a single AAA start in his age 20 season.
  2. I'm tired of it as well but that's because the Twins are so slow in promoting pitchers. Trevor May had an ugly ERA but he struck out 44 hitters in 45 innings. He started showing more control in the later innings as well. Alex Meyer should have seen action in 2014 and after 130 innings in AAA, has little left to learn in the minors. Jose Berrios is steamrolling the minors and might start the season in AAA. Even if he starts in AA, he could be banging on the door by June. At some point, those kids need to just play so we can remove the "potentially" from that phrase.
  3. If Santana could truly add five wins next season, that's a good deal for the Twins. That puts them close to 80 wins. A couple of breaks here and there and they're a fringe contender. My biggest issue with Santana is that I don't think he's worth anything close to five wins with a chance he's worth zero wins over Meyer or Gibson or May.
  4. Oh, sure. My point is that I'm less interested in 2015 than I am 2016 and beyond. Again, I'm not dead set against a Santana signing... I'm simply not interested in giving him three or more years. I'd rather have two years of Santana at $16m per than four years of Santana at $12m per.
  5. Oh, he'll almost certainly be one of the best five pitchers in 2015 and probably 2016... 2017? Way too hard to predict that given Santana's silly career arc. At this point, I'd rather see the Twins roll the dice on Meyer and Berrios. I believe the Twins should be looking for a big upgrade or no upgrade at all.
  6. IMO, it's almost a lock that he wouldn't be the Twins best pitcher. Santana has been an extremely volatile pitcher in his career and is entering his age 32 season. His great peaks are more than offset by his pretty awful valleys. He won't be better than Phil Hughes for the next two years. He might be better than Phil in one of those years but almost certainly not both. IMO, there's a decent chance Nolasco would outperform Santana (not 50% but a decent chance), not to mention a possible breakout from May, Gibson, or Meyer.
  7. Santana is a better pitcher but he's not a lot better. Santana, 99 ERA+. Nolasco, 91 ERA+. Santana is more volatile while Nolasco is more consistently mediocre. Ervin Santana is the kind of middle-of-the-road pitcher that I believe the Twins should avoid at this point. There's a very good chance that Meyer or Berrios is a better pitcher going forward... Maybe not in 2015 but certainly in 2016 and beyond.
  8. One year, maybe two at most. He's not terribly different than Nolasco. If he wants more than that, walk away. I'd prefer they didn't sign him at all.
  9. Mike, I share your frustration... But in the end, there's a good chance the Hunter contract isn't an awful one. Could the Twins have done better? I certainly think so but ultimately, it's a one year deal so... meh. For this team to meaningfully improve, help needs to come from the pitching staff and the farm. As-is, I think the pitching staff has a shot to improve over 2014 if Nolasco rebounds (which he should)... The flip side of that coin is that Hughes could regress. I'm torn on signing a free agent pitcher. At some point, the kids need to play. Is this the year to do it? Sure... I can go with that plan but it would have been nice to see Meyer get his feet wet last season so we have a better idea of who he is. On the other hand, it sure wouldn't hurt to go find someone who has a legitimate shot of being a #2 or better pitcher. Here's my order of preference: 1. Sign a truly good pitcher, even if he's an arm with question marks. Go for upside and rely on the farm if the arm fails. That could be Brett Anderson, it could be James Shields, or it could be a trade for Cole Hamels (not crazy about the latter but whatever). 2. Do nothing. Let the kids play. 3. Sign another junkballer/no-strikeout/frustrating pitcher and take innings from someone with real potential. I'm pretty okay with the first two. I'll be &*^%ing furious if the third happens.
  10. Thorpe is my favorite dark horse in the system right now. It's unfair to call the Twins' approach "slow" with Thorpe. The kid played an entire season of Low A ball as an 18 year old. That was an extremely aggressive move by the Twins. Kohl Stewart has been considered a somewhat brisk mover through the system and he's 13 months older than Lewis Thorpe.
  11. Different, but similar, issues can be drawn from the same inspiration even if King was corrupted by his own societal constraints (as are we all). Like everyone else in history, MLK Jr was wrong about some things when viewed through the lens of time. That doesn't mean similar inequalities do not exist and that allusions should not be drawn.
  12. Interesting isn't the word I'd use to describe it.
  13. I prefer the former because of your second paragraph. The Twins have a mid-term fix for the OF defense problem in Rosario, Buxton, and possibly Hicks while the infield has a potential mid-term issue in Santana, Sano, and the aging Joe Mauer. It's very possible - maybe even likely - that the outfield defense becomes a team strength by 2016 while the infield defense becomes a liability at the same time.
  14. I just looked it up in case I was remembering it incorrectly. Edgar Martinez played 266 games in AAA (WHA?!?!?!) with an OPS of ~.950. *shakes head*
  15. Not to mention that Paul was simply a better player for longer than Baines... Hard to gauge a comparison to Palmeiro due to him sticking a needle in his ass. As for Martinez, he should have been in the majors much sooner than he was and he's unfairly kept out of the HoF because of it. The dude flat out raked. A career 147 OPS+ and .411 OBP? Oh, come on. Put him in already. For comparison, Frank Thomas has a 156 OPS+ and a .419 OBP and there's absolutely no question from anyone sane whether he should be in Cooperstown.
  16. Dawson is at least a notch above Hunter, maybe more. I'm sure voters gave some sympathy votes to Dawson for his injuries that transformed him from being a great player to merely a good player. Dawson was a borderline candidate without injury consideration, nearly a lock if you factor in untimely injury that drastically changed his career as one of the best all-around players in the game. Finley is a pretty good comp. He wasn't quite as good as Hunter in a few ways but overall, one of the more similar career arcs you'll find, I think.
  17. Here's a solid take on the subject from another journalist: http://www.si.com/mlb/2014/12/04/torii-hunter-minnesota-twins-press-conference-mike-berardino
  18. Baines is a pretty bad comp to Hunter. Baines spent most of his career playing as a DH and was a poor fielder before that point. Hunter was considered the best fielder in MLB at an up-the-middle position during his prime seasons.
  19. I'll take a look on my Android tablet tonight.
  20. No, for the same reason that guys like Don Mattingly, Bernie Williams, and Kent Hrbek are not in Cooperstown.
  21. I'd prefer the Twins shore up their OF defense and play to some of TF's strengths but this would be an acceptable alternative... I think we can both agree that they're taking the worst route possible by riding the fence and not picking a side. Either fix the OF defense or go find pitchers who will make the most use of your good IF defense.
  22. Nah, that was intentional. Hunter has a pretty decent bat and he'll almost certainly be an upgrade over any internal options available at this point. July could be a different story once more options are available from the minors but Hunter should be better than Schafer or Hicks in April/May.
  23. Here you go: 1. Sign someone else 2. Grab a sandwich 3. Do literally anything else that sounds remotely interesting 4. Sign Torii Hunter 5. Do nothing
  24. Sigh. Sigh. *grabs bottle of scotch*
  25. I know altercations happen all the time. Sports are competitive... Which is why I didn't get too upset over the Hunter/Morneau thing. The occasional disagreement is expected. My problems with Hunter stem from a myriad of things: his vocal stupidity on race, marriage, and other topics and the fact that he seems to get into a lot of altercations with teammates. Neither speaks well to his character in my opinion. Teammates disagreeing is one thing, teammates going all Bonds/Kent in the dugout on a regular basis is something else entirely, doubly so when Hunter so routinely gets a pass from the press just because he's approachable.
