  1. I just watched the clip of Sano's second homer. Holy ****. Third deck? And it didn't even look like he tried to swing hard? Unbelievable.
  2. This team won 72 games last season and most of us predicted a win total between 72-81. Yeah, this season can be a success without making the postseason. We can also be disappointed the front office didn't push for the postseason a little harder in July.
  3. Aaron Hicks with four hits on the night, all against righties. Impressive.
  4. I have no idea what to think of Hicks right now. His season OPS against righties is approaching .650. Before the recall, his overall OPS was below .650. His OPS against righties had to be well under .600 at that point. Has Hicks actually become an acceptable hitter against RHP and we just haven't acknowledged it yet?
  5. I would hate to see the human element of umpiring removed from baseball, even if that means my favorite team occasionally gets the shaft. Try your best to hold umpires accountable but don't remove them from the game entirely. Part of the reason I enjoy baseball is its old world charm. Don't sanitize it to the point where machines are involved. Sometimes we love things because of their imperfections, not in spite of them.
  6. It's only a meaningless stat if that's what it's trying to measure. There are plenty of reasons to question WAR but that's not really one of them.
  7. Why can't Escobar just play every day? Why is that such a difficult decision for Molitor?
  8. Yes. When talking about the rebuild, people tend to forget 2014 was a pretty awful year for Twins prospects. Buxton, basically out for the season. Sano, completely out for the season. Meyer, late season injury followed by a 2015 implosion. Rosario, development stunted due to his love of ganja. Hicks, so completely lost he gave up switch-hitting. 2015 has been a much better year for the entire organization.
  9. Catcher is so much more than getting reps. It requires extensive knowledge of hitters, pitchers, pitch-calling, framing, etc. It's not something a player just "picks up" in an offseason. There's a reason why catchers, like goalies in the NHL, often take the longest to reach the highest level of the sport; it's a really hard job. That's one of the things that made Joe Mauer such a special player and why Josmil Pinto is still flailing away in the minors.
  10. MLB.com has the transaction listed at 1:40am on 8/7. I figure that means it actually occurred on 8/6 because we all know JR already had his milk and cookies and is snuggled into bed by 1:40am (mostly joking). http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/news/#player_id=608648
  11. I haven't paid much attention to the standings recently either but after looking at the upcoming teams this morning, I found it interesting just how much the Twins could gain/lose in a three week stretch of play.
  12. I think Ryan kind of owes it to the fans to give Berrios a shot. He's their best option to salvage the rotation right now. Bring him up. The kid just dominates wherever you put him. I'm not concerned about Jose's options. Like Sano and Buxton, he's approaching the kind of elite prospect status where options aren't a big concern. If he stays in Rochester, he's a top 15, maybe top 10 prospect on some lists this offseason.
  13. The rest of August is going to make or break this team (I know, duh). Here are the WC standings as of this morning: WC - Toronto +2 WC - Los Angeles +0 Baltimore -2 Tampa Bay -2.5 Minnesota -3 Texas -3.5 Toronto is going to pass the Yankees (currently .5 behind NY). It's almost inevitable at this point. The Twins' remaining schedule in August is: Rangers - 2 games Indians - 3 games @Yankees - 3 games @Orioles - 4 games @Rays - 3 games Astros - 3 games For all intents and purposes, that is every WC team in front of the Twins excluding the Angels but the Twins get to play the Astros, who could easily switch places with the Angels by that point (just one game ahead of LAA this morning). A brutal stretch of games, yes. The Twins have been playing horrible baseball, yes. But this season isn't over quite yet. It's pretty rare for an August schedule to line up quite that cleanly for a team. The Twins potentially get to play every Wild Card team surrounding them over a three week stretch of play.
  14. Man, the Twins needed and deserved that win. That eighth inning was straight up bad luck. Dozier four feet foul, then robbed of a hit, then Sano missing a homer by inches.
  15. Yes, this. If Byron's "demotion" goes well beyond the expected rehab time (ie. 9/1), then it's time to get pissed off. Now is not that time. Why do we care if he was demoted? If he successfully rehabs and is back in Minnesota on August 28th, what's the big deal? The end result is the same.
  16. It's possible Hunter had an impact. I wasn't entirely against the Hunter signing because the Twins needed a warm body with a moderately high floor going into the season. They no longer need that warm body. Their young players have made the necessary adjustments.
  17. If September 1 rolls around and at least two of those three guys aren't in Minnesota, well... http://www.gamegrin.com/assets/Uploads/hulk-calm.jpg Followed by: http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/0/5/1/6/6/3/9/Incredible-Hulk-Smash-World-131604673693.jpeg
  18. He definitely had a role in all of this but after posting a July OPS of .928, he absolutely deserved a call but the Twins continued to let him rot in Rochester, despite Minnesota being one of the worst teams against RHP in the AL. Do we believe a 24 year old Oswaldo Arcia suddenly forgot how to hit? He has over 800 PAs in MLB with a slightly above average OPS+. He should be on this roster.
  19. The front office won't do it but the first OF on my list to trade would be Eddie Rosario. He has value and his swing-happy nature makes me nervous. But I also think Hicks is going to have some value this offseason. He continues to rake and his OPS against RHP is up to .639. Given Hicks' stellar defense this season, his rejuvenated bat, his elite discipline, and his questionable value after 2+ seasons of struggling, he'd be on my must-keep list. I'd also keep Oswaldo Arcia because the Twins have completely destroyed his value by keeping him in AAA all season.
  20. Fun fact: 2015 Torii Hunter: 408 PAs, 1.2 fWAR 2014 Oswaldo Arcia: 410 PAs, 0.9 fWAR For all intents and purposes, they're the same player... but one has massive room for growth while the other is getting ready to file his paperwork for an AARP card.
  21. Please God, no. While I think Ryan overrates veteran leadership/performance to a frustrating degree, I think there's almost a zero chance of Hunter returning to the Twins in 2016 unless he accepts a $1-3m contract and a bench role from Opening Day forward. The 2016 Twins have: Hicks Rosario Buxton Arcia Kepler If Ryan can't field a competent OF with those options, well... I don't know what to say.
  22. I don't buy that at all. The rotation logjam is unfortunate but May, Gibson, and Berrios form a pretty solid rotation, provided Jose pans out as expected. Santana/Hughes/Nolasco have some upside as back of the rotation arms. Fixing the bullpen in an offseason is literally the easiest thing to do on a baseball team. This team isn't far from competing, the Twins just need to make a few moves. Given their abundance of OF assets, making those moves will not be difficult.
  23. Even if he is ready, I'd put the odds at 5:1 that he will ever approach Dozier's current value as an MLB player. Jorge Polanco owns a .755 OPS in his MiLB career. That's nice for an up-the-middle player but Dozier is on his way to averaging 4 WAR per season since 2013. That's Jorge Polanco's ceiling. This isn't a Joe Mauer/AJ Pierzynski situation. Jorge Polanco isn't half the player Joe Mauer was in 2004. Trading Brian Dozier is a sure-fire way to make the 2016 Minnesota Twins a worse team.
  24. When you have a position of strength, it makes sense to trade a good MLB player. Second base is not a position of strength on the Twins. You have Brian Dozier and... uh... er... Jorge Polanco? A guy with a .735 OPS across two MiLB levels this season? That's your replacement? Yeah, okay. No thanks. Never mind the Twins don't have a SS and Polanco is their best option at that position as well... I never understand the thinking of some posters. Win now! Sell high! Well, most of the time those ideas don't work in tandem and they almost never work when your replacement for an All-Star MLB player is a guy who doesn't crack any MLB top 100 prospect lists. Listen, Jorge Polanco is a nice prospect. There's also an overwhelming probability his peak will never approach Dozier's current production.
  25. For all we know, Byron told the trainer "I can swing but it hurts a little" and the Twins demoted him after the third game as a precautionary measure. There could be a dozen reasons why he was demoted and I simply don't see what the fuss is about because, as you said, "wrist injury". Two weeks of caution is not worth this amount of hand-wringing. If he's not back in late August or September 1st, then it's time to complain. Not today.
