One small step toward breaking the cable monopolies (though they control most of the ISP infrastructure so we'll still have to deal with them). This is going to snowball quickly. I expect within 12 months, a traditional cable channel will offer standalone streaming for a few bucks a month. Once that happens, the snowball will build quickly as other companies follow. Within 3-5 years, I think we'll have a good, if not great, selection of streaming channels to buy a la carte. Unfortunately, sports will be the last thing to offer standalone streaming because cable companies will fight to the death to keep them. And then there are non-traditional cable providers entering the market and offering streaming cable channels... SlingTV is already running, Apple is expected to have their service up and running any time now.
