  1. I suspect that was the case. It's unfortunate the market bottomed out on 3B this offseason. But Levi has a point... Ryan never wavered from the "I'm not trading Trevor" line... But Ryan often says stuff like that so I don't put much stock in his quotes. He plays it extremely close to the vest. Flip a coin, IMO. It's possible Ryan was feinting, it's possible he never had plans to trade Plouffe.
  2. I'd argue signing Park caused the biggest issue but "tomato, tomahto". In the end, I suspect it will work out. Redundancy isn't the worst thing in the world but it'd be a hell of a lot better if that redundancy didn't revolve around 3B/1B/DH.
  3. I can't really buy into this line of thought. The Twins' goal is to win as many ballgames as possible in 2016. Trevor Plouffe gains much of his value from the defensive side of the game. Sano is a question mark but we can surely agree he will be a downgrade from Plouffe. So you have two options: play one guy out of position and hide him somewhere damage will be minimized or play two guys out of position and sacrifice defense at multiple locations. In a perfect world, Plouffe would have been traded and we wouldn't have this conversation... But that didn't happen so it makes sense to maximize your defensive alignment as much as possible and that means Plouffe plays more time at third. If it was my decision, Sano would start at third one or twice a week and as the season progressed, he'd steadily get more time at the hot corner. If he can handle the position, you look into trading Plouffe for a piece you need at the deadline. If he can't handle the position, Plouffe stays at third the majority of the time and you revaluate next November. The Mauer comp isn't a good one. Mauer wasn't only expected to be a better offensive weapon than Pierzynski, at only 21 years old he was already much better defensively. Putting Mauer behind the dish wasn't a sacrifice, it was a win-win move and was obvious from day one.
  4. This dip is nonsensical. Apple's financials are insanely strong. They have enough money in the bank to buy about 75% of the shares of Microsoft, for crying out loud. Their long term outlook has question marks but the market has been punishing them for a full year as Apple continues to break its own records quarter after quarter. It's as if investors are saying "you're no longer growing at a 15% rate YoY so now we're going to punish you as if that growth never happened at all". At some point people will pull their heads out of their asses and the stock will self-adjust.
  5. I don't own Under Armor but Facebook had at really good day for me.
  6. If you want a laugh, look what the market did to Amazon today. +$52 per share during trading -$82 per share after hours The market is silly and stupid.
  7. I don't see why Gibson would take an option on his first FA year because nobody front-loads contracts as enticement (much to my chagrin).
  8. I hate pull-over jerseys but I'd love to see a button-up baby blue variant.
  9. More of the same. I think they're nice enough but I can't get too excited by another alt uniform.
  10. I don't fault the Twins for hanging on to Plouffe and I don't think letting him walk is the worst idea if that's how the hand plays out. What really sucks is that Sano hurt his hamstring and couldn't play third. Getting him a handful of games at the hot corner in 2015 may have helped the Twins make the decision to move Plouffe. Would the Twins have moved Plouffe if that happened? Dunno. Maybe unlikely... But it never hurts to see how a young player handles defense against MLB hitters.
  11. I wish there was a candidate who was slightly more moderate than Sanders and less distasteful than Hillary. I like Bernie - I like him a lot - but mostly as a senator. He's the left version of Rand Paul; a guy who sticks to his principles whether you agree with them or not and makes a stand on important issues everyone else ignores.
  12. While you're correct to rebut the claim Radke was a "great" pitcher, he was a *very good* pitcher. He logged that 38 WAR in only 2400 IP and retired at age 33. By comparison, Mark Buerhle had 3200 IP. Most of those guys in the middle of your list pitched far more innings than Radke (Colon 2900 IP, Moyer 4000 IP, Finley 3200 IP, etc.). Radke wasn't a dominant pitcher but he was the type of pitcher most playoff teams wouldn't mind having in the two slot and the type of pitcher playoff teams would love to have in the three slot. Unfortunately, Brad's most productive years were wasted on the 90s Twins. From 1998-2000, Radke was worth a whopping 18 WAR. A 6 WAR per season average in his peak.
  13. Remove April (only four starts) and his K/9 jumps 0.5 per 9, up to about 7.3.
  14. They are. I'm not sure why you received an email using that wording.
  15. Great article, Nick. I'm disappointed with the offseason thus far. When the Twins were a 66 win team, I didn't really care about payroll. Pick up a few scrapheap/reclamation guys and expect to be bad. Get that draft pick and wait for the farm to build the team into a legitimate contender. As the farm approaches maturation, pick up a guy here and there so you're ready to contend when the youngsters take the field. Well, I didn't agree with some of the ways the Twins chose to get to that point but they got there, posting an 83 win season in 2015. Well, good! But now is the time to start building a contender. The Twins don't have to go for broke and Park was an interesting acquisition. Not the one I would have lobbied for but an interesting acquisition. But come on, not addressing the bullpen in a meaningful fashion? Yuck. Now is the time to find role players and the Twins badly need a role player in the pen. Next season, Jepsen comes off the books so signing a bullpen arm for 2-3 years is no big deal. I don't need a $130m payroll but I expect the team to spend what it takes to stay on the gas. That includes at least a few million to acquire a legit bullpen arm.
  16. FIFY. Juries are screwed up and the court doesn't help them enough. Jurors are often stupid as ****, to put it bluntly. We're not drawing from the creme de la creme when it comes to a jury pool. On top of not being the brightest bulbs in the nation, they're underpaid and jerked out of their lives for weeks at a time. Maybe they don't even care about the trial and spend the entire time thinking about grocery lists, which leads to a few problems... - Jurors are not allowed to rewatch segments of the trial. They can look over evidence but cannot rewatch the presentation even though this is, last time I checked, the 21st century. - Jurors can take notes but are given instructions that if their notes conflict with their memory, they are to rely on their memory and not their notes. It's completely ****ing nonsensical, especially in a case that is weeks long. If you want to argue the jury system is something that badly needs an overhaul, you'll get no arguments from me.
  17. I got a chuckle out of this.
  18. Oh sure, I wasn't saying the valuation of the two was in lock step, merely pointing out that valuation doesn't mean much until you cash out. It helps with loan leveraging and a few other things but it's not like the Pohlads have cash in pocket because the Twins are now worth $900m. And I can't imagine asset leveraging is a terribly big deal to the Pohlad family, which was worth billions of dollars before the Twins came into the picture. They already have loads of assets and businesses from which to draw.
  19. Sure, their portfolio is stronger and that has its benefits but the team's increase in valuation is like my personal stock growth in Netflix: it's just a number until I cash out of the stock.
  20. Buxton posting a 2.5 dWAR would put him in the range of #4-8 in all of MLB most seasons. Can Byron Buxton do that? Sure. Can Byron Buxton do that in 2016? Eh, I'm skeptical of that happening. I'd be thrilled if he posted a dWAR in the 1.5-2.0 range in 2016.
  21. I don't have a big problem with the government assisting in stadium building if - and this is a HUGE "IF" - it makes financial sense for the government to do so. Target Field has done wonders for the North Loop. Would that development have happened anyway? Yeah, probably... But it's unlikely it would have happened quite as fast and furious as it did with TF being the centerpiece of the north side of downtown. Similar things happened in San Diego surrounding PETCO Park. More housing, more wealthy residents, more taxes. Baseball brings people to a metro area 81+ times a year. Those people are flush with cash. That's a good thing for a metro area and the sheer number of people a stadium brings might convince a city to chip in for a stadium because it's a win-win-win situation for everyone involved (the team, the city, the fans). But don't even get me ****ing started on the Vikings stadium. Eight games. Eight ****ing games. Oh, and the stadium costs over double the price to build.
  22. Also, let's not forget the shady book-keeping that exists in sports. Franchises are notorious for hiding profits by creating multiple corporations that handle parking, concessions, merchandise, etc. So while it appears the parent corporation is making, say, $300m per year, there could literally be hundreds of millions of profit hidden away in other corporate entities.
  23. I don't think that's true at all. Every professional sports team in every sport has seen their franchise value skyrocket over the past few decades. Many of those teams lost money over short periods of time. Some have even lost money over long periods of time. We live in a world where American soccer franchises are valued at $150m+. Owning a sports franchise has been very lucrative for many years.
  24. I've had the same thought many times over the past decade or so.
  25. No arguments here. As I said in an earlier post, in no way am I defending the Twins' payroll, just pointing out some of the nuances of the argument. I think most of us can agree the payroll has been unacceptably low over the past several years. I didn't have a big problem with it when the Twins were a terrible team but now that they're coming off an 83 win season, it's time to open the ****ing wallet and pick up some good players to push for a playoff spot.
