  1. I just noticed Joe is sporting his sunglasses today.
  2. I tend to agree but there's enough ST left where I won't commit to that statement.
  3. And the moment I consider a Buxton demotion, Byron goes and does that. But that pitch was pretty much a gimme. Fastball right in Byron's wheelhouse.
  4. If Quentin forces his way onto the roster, I'd consider sliding Rosario back to center and going Quentin/Rosario/Sano in the OF. Yeah, that OF defense will be painful at times but the offensive potency may be enough to offset the difference for a month or two while Buxton works in Rochester.
  5. When it comes to hate speech, I almost always err on the side of caution. The precedent set by sliding toward censorship is too dangerous to ignore. Ultimately, I have enough faith in the diversity and intelligence of the majority to thwart hate speech. And Trump is merely a vessel of hatred. He's unelectable in a general and I think it's more important to examine what makes his followers buy into the speech than the speech itself. Because if you eliminate Trump, someone else slides into his place with a similar platform (as we've seen parts of the GOP begin to adopt some of his scarier ideas). He's tapping into real hatred felt by millions of people.
  6. Back to Nolasco: It's still only March 13th but has he already pitched his way out of the rotation conversation? His results are bad but I'm seeing the same problems I saw in 2014/15: hitters continue to square up on him and pull the ball. They're not squeaking through with walks and bloopers; they're drilling the ball.
  7. Oy, Buxton. He misread that ball and allowed the runner to take second.
  8. Well, I suppose the good news is that Nolasco is on the verge of pitching himself out of the rotation, if he hasn't already accomplished that feat.
  9. Announcer: "Ricky Nolasco has always been a groundball pitcher, gets the groundball there." Fangraphs: 41.7% groundball rate Me: Uh...
  10. Oh, sweet Jesus, Nolasco is pitching. Why am I forced to watch Nolasco every time I manage to watch a game?
  11. To me, the difference is that the far right left behind any pretense of intellectual honesty years ago. If someone spouts nonsensical gibberish, I'm not going to hold them to the same standard I hold someone I respect. The right is certainly guilty of this but so much of their platform is contradictory and emotion-based that little stuff like "shouting down the other guy" falls by the wayside. The right wing's scattershot platform has become so untenable that's the least of their problems. On the other hand, the left prides itself on honest discourse and freedom of thought, which makes the trend of "I don't like what you're saying so I'm going to force you to stop saying it" very disturbing. Whereas I almost expect it from the right because they make no bones about strangling every part of your personal life of which they do not approve.
  12. Eh, I can't let off the protestors that easily. They're responsible for their own behavior and it's high time someone in the room starts acting like the adult. And that sure as hell isn't going to be Trump, so... Never mind that violence only feeds the beast that is the Trump campaign and its followers.
  13. If your name is Buck Britton, are you morally obligated to play professional baseball? Because that's some "1940s rub some dirt on it and get back out there" **** right there.
  14. I can't quite wrap my head around the simultaneous implosions of Meyer and Arcia. Arcia was my darkhorse favorite in the org after his breakout performance in 2010. He cruised through the system and posted two good partial seasons in Minnesota. And then... Boom, planet-sucking blackhole implosion. I don't get it.
  15. Ted Cruz taking 75% of the votes in Wyoming right now. Wow. Just wow.
  16. Twins Baseball™: Scaring Opponents into Making Outs Since 1961
  17. The only really important factor to me with service time is Berrios' age. Adding his age 28 season to service time *might* be a move that pays off in tens of millions of dollars. But most pitchers? Nah, I don't think it's a big deal. And it might not be a big deal with Berrios, I'm only thinking about it because he's so young.
  18. Link is being stupid on mobile and the source site is terrible on mobile. You'll need a desktop.
  19. We're throwing a party tonight with the theme "Fireside Chat" so I've been listening to FDR's iconic speeches. I stumbled across this speech about the Supreme Court. Oh, sweet Jesus, his speech from March of 1937 is hilarious. This is must-listen stuff. http://www.oldradioworld.com/media/Fireside%20Chat%20with%20Franklin%20D%20Roosevelt%201937-03-09%20Fireside%20Chat.mp3
  20. I participated in that conversation but I believe my quote was "the GM has final say over the roster". Final say and input are not mutually exclusive. There was ample evidence Gardy was the one in love with the third catcher on the roster, not Ryan. That was one roster spot we saw wasted for hundreds of games during Gardy's tenure. My only point is that because we saw things in the past, we shouldn't assume we will continue to see them in the future. Molitor has all of 162 games under his belt as a manager and given his openness to trying new things, it's not out of the realm of possibility we start seeing more offensively-potent benches in the future.
  21. I agree Berrios would be on the roster. The Twins, for good or bad, don't seem to put much emphasis on service time. They didn't hesitate to throw Hicks out there in 2013 and he's not in Berrios' league as a prospect.
  22. If the Twins were missing a fifth guy in the rotation, I'd be more bullish on having Berrios in a Minnesota uniform on Opening Day. But given his young age and the sheer number of guys vying for a rotation spot, I have no problems punting this decision to May or June (or even July depending on situation). Gibson, Hughes, Santana are locks. Duffey deserves a spot. Milone probably deserves a spot. I'd like to see May back in the rotation if the bullpen sorts itself out with Meyer and/or Burdi. Nolasco... Whatever. He's there, I guess. That leaves Berrios in a tough place over the short term but I'm sure the team can find a way to work him in there as ineffectiveness/injury takes hold of a few of those guys.
  23. I'm in no rush to extend Gibson but I'm not sure he has peaked yet, either. He showed flashes of having strong #2 upside last season before regressing back into #3/4 territory. It's possible this is as good as he will get but it's also possible he's better than his 108 ERA+ last season. While Kyle is on the old side because of the college draft slot and TJ surgery, he only has 425 IP in the majors (and only 370 MiLB IP, his arm is fresh for a 28 year old). It's possible, maybe even likely, he has a little projection left in him. It's a risk. Do you wait and extend Gibson to see what kind of pitcher he projects to be in his early 30s or do you try to grab him now while the grabbing is good? Me, I'd punt for at least a season. I see no reason to fall over myself to secure what appears to be a middling starter, a guy with a TJ surgery already under his belt.
