  1. I think you're getting that mixed up somehow. Part of the problem is Palka's a defensively challenged LHB. Kepler is a defensively competent LHB. You'd be replacing Kepler with the same problems, only worse.
  2. The Twins have played only four extra inning games this season, the least in baseball. The Giants have played the most extra inning games, a whopping 19 thus far.
  3. Palka is a left-handed batter who finished his AAA season with a .759 OPS. There's no place for him on a team that's trying to win in September. Granite/Palka would be a huge downgrade from Rosario/Grossman. You gain a little defense with Granite but lose a ton of offense. With Palka, you probably remain defensively neutral (Palka might be worse than Grossman) but again, likely lose quite a bit of offense.
  4. Yeah, more than one person suggested releasing Rosario four months ago. It was funny at the time but is absolutely hilarious now.
  5. Man, that was a hell of a plate appearance by Polanco.
  6. Neither Carew nor Mauer have/had a negative season of fWAR so it's a moot point.
  7. Ugh, that seems like an unreasonable conclusion to draw from seven starts. The guy switched teams and leagues and is just 21 years old. Gonna need a lot more data before I conclude the Twins somehow broke him.
  8. Hard to call Smith "rounded". He was stellar at two skills (defense and baserunning) and pretty bad at the rest. edit: huh, never realized Smith was as disciplined a hitter as he was.
  9. Just for fun, here's a comparison using bWAR: Mike Piazza had a career best bWAR of 8.7 in 1997. Ivan Rodriguez had a career best bWAR of 6.5, also in 1997. Which player had the better season? It's not as easy as just spitting out a number, as Pudge was one of the all-time greats behind the dish while Piazza was one of the all-time jokes behind the dish.
  10. Weird stat to note about Escobar. While his 2015 and 2017 seasons look very similar in BA, OBP, and SLG, how he got there is really strange. 2015: 31 2B, 4 3B, 12 HR 2017: 13 2B, 4 3B, 15 HR *scratches head*
  11. While I agree in principle, WAR is notoriously awful at measuring catcher defense. And by most regards, Mauer was at least passable, if not very good (by the time framing came around, Joe was getting a bit long in the tooth for a catcher so it's hard to say what he was like in his mid 20s).
  12. I meant win two of the three remaining games. A sweep would be great but just win three out of four and go home. That will be enough to stick a fork in KC's postseason chances.
  13. Take two out of three in KC and then get the hell back home for what should be a comfortable seven game home stand against the Padres and Jays.
  14. Holy **** my prediction is on track to be really close. .260/.340/.480 32 HR
  15. He's likely the kind of complementary player that good teams need to win. And that's okay, we're not banking the future on the guy. If Sano and Buxton round out to who we expect them to be, Rosario is a damned fine 6/7 hitter on a good team.
  16. Logjams have a tendency to sort themselves out quickly due to regression, injury, etc. I'm not worried about it.
  17. I don't want to see MLB enact any rules about defensive shifts but I worry that the analytics of baseball will override a natural tendency to counter the shift with a "hit it where they ain't" strategy. Because it's entirely possible that pull-happy offensive players are better pulling the ball, shifts be damned. And a pull-happy, defensive shift laden baseball is a less interesting spectator sport. And that's bad for the long term game. Homers are fun and everything but runners on base, stolen bases, plays at second/third/home make for a better game to watch. The more often a ball is put into play, the better off the sport is in general.
  18. I'd be shocked if Mauer makes even half his current salary in his next contract. But I'm also not sold on resigning him at all.
  19. He's also a better hitter than Jones adjusted for OPS+. Not by a lot but Rosario is also 25 years old. Jones had his only dominant season at age 27. And we shouldn't ignore Jones' painful L/R splits whereas Rosario's splits are minimal, especially for LHB.
  20. If he's an .800-.850 OPS player in 2018, there's a better than even chance he rejects the QO and someone gives him $70m+ over 4-5 years. And even if you're "stuck" with him, you have an .800-.850 OPS second baseman on a one year contract.
  21. If this is who Dozier is going forward and the market remains soft on second basemen, riding out the contract and giving him a QO seems the most logical route to take.
  22. The easy answer is Kepler has more value but I'm not sure that's accurate. Unlike Rosario, he still hasn't figured out LHP and while he has both more control time and is younger, I think the race is pretty close at this point given Rosario's season.
  23. Yes, that was an absurd statement. Young had a negative career fWAR. Rosario hasn't posted a negative fWAR season. Oh, and he's 25 years old.
