  1. The Twins could close out the season 0-6 and still likely make the postseason. The Angels, 3-7 over their last 10 games, would have to go 5-1 just to force a game 163. The other non-eliminated teams would have to go 6-0 over that same stretch.
  2. Why skip anyone at this point? The Twins could close out the season 0-6 and they’re still nearly guaranteed a postseason spot. If anything, I want to see more Colon/Gee/garbage over the next week to give the guys who matter a breather.
  3. Sure, but at least with a bullpen, you have a slight advantage by playing L/R splits and giving hitters a different look every inning or two.
  4. Vargas’ 122 OPS+ last season was in fewer than 180 plate appearances. Two scorching weeks and a player can post an OPS+ that high. That doesn’t mean the player is good. Vargas is a middling DH in an era when a good DH can be found cheaply. If the org has confidence in him, I suppose I won’t get too upset about his retention. If they cut him, I also won’t get too upset about it. But to keep him, they’d have to be confident he’s an .800 OPS player and I just don’t see that happening unless Kennys flips a switch.
  5. Yes, this. With a long bullpen in the postseason, getting 6+ out of your starter isn't as important.
  6. Heh, still unlikely. Maybe Vargas turns into something but I think it's unlikely. He's going to end the season with around 900 career MLB plate appearances. He'll be 27 years old next year. The Twins can keep him and give him a shot but his upside is too modest and the stakes too high, in my opinion. The Twins should be trying to win in 2018 and win big (90+ games). I don't see Kennys Vargas being part of 90 wins given the rest of the roster.
  7. No. Ortiz had a 120 OPS+ the year he was released by the Twins. Ortiz had a career MiLB OPS of over .900. They're not the same player, not even close to it.
  8. Sure, but it was a stretch to expect all of them to regress at the same time. Out of six teams, the majority of the time one or two of them will be .500 or better over a short stretch.
  9. Yeah, but it required some weirdness for that to come about. Out of the second WC contenders, the Twins have the high water mark at 5-5 over their past ten games. Every other team is between 4-6 and 2-8. Which isn't that strange until you realize there are six teams that have played sub-.500 ball down the stretch. The logistics of that even happening are impressive. Each team needed to split any head-to-head games they had and then lose damned near every game they played against a non-WC team. All at the same time.
  10. Think about what you just said and the probability of it happening. Somewhere in there, you’ll likely find the ~5% of the Twins not making the postseason.
  11. Valid points but wasn’t the 2015 squad like +12 in BaseRuns? On a phone so can’t look it up.
  12. Oh, I see what you’re saying. An extension while the contract is in place. I misunderstood.
  13. There’s an easy solution to this problem, one every MLB team would use no matter the opponent: Use your best pitcher. It’s the postseason. No team is going to get cute with L/R matchups when one pitcher is so clearly superior to everyone else.
  14. The Padres, at 69-84, are a really bad baseball team. But then you look at their pythag and realize they're a terrible baseball team. Their expected record is 58-95. It's impressive to be one of the worst teams in baseball and still manage to be +11 wins over your pythag record. +11 wins!
  15. Yeah, declining former stars would be shoved out of baseball if that 80% rule applied to them.
  16. Never mind that it could have been as simple as Steil saying "I want to be the one to let him know". Absent any real information outside of a pissed off ex-employee, I struggle to care much about any of this.
  17. Joe isn't going anywhere. Let him finish out his contract and then make a decision.
  18. He’s missing ~5mph on his slider. Liriano’s slider was historically good. IIRC, he could get it up to 92mph and the bottom fell out. It was a good fastball that suddenly lost a violent battle with gravity.
  19. The Tigers are making Mejia’s slider look really good tonight.
  20. I said it before the last series and I'm saying it even more loudly afterward: SANTANA He didn't have a great performance against the Yankees but he wasn't scared of them. Getting another 2-3 outs would have been preferable but he gave the team a chance to win and under normal circumstances, probably would have left the game with the lead.
  21. I'm not disregarding it but it won't tell me whether the season is a success or not. I already feel this season is a success, now it's down to degree of success.
  22. I also want to see better but the way the 2015 and 2017 teams got to 83 wins is going to be very different. This looks sustainable, something to build upon. 2015 shouldn't have led to the 2016 disaster but when you get right down to it, that team was really good for a month and mediocre one other month (IIRC).
  23. It's frustrating to watch this team flail against the Yankees - a superior team and I think we all knew that going in - but in the grand scheme of things, it's a good experience that many young teams face. Remember that five out of nine position players are 25 or younger. Everyone in the lineup, excluding Mauer and Castro, have never played a postseason game at all. So, yeah, I want to see that Wild Card game but it's not what decides whether I consider this a successful season or not. We're now at the point of what degree of success this team will see in 2017.
