  1. Eh, I can't really agree with that analysis. Yeah, there are a bunch of underwhelming teams in the AL but there are a bunch of legitimately terrible teams in the NL, two of which reside in the Brewers' division. I don't know which team's performance is more impressive but I don't see how the Brewers are significantly more impressive, particularly if you factor in 2016 records for both teams. Milwaukee is going to improve by 13-14 games, Minnesota is going to improve by 25 or so. Oakland, the AL's third worst team, would be tied for the ninth best record in the NL.
  2. Oh, I don't blame their postseason failures entirely on the injuries but it sure could have gone differently without the team's best players going down. And I just want to see what this team is actually capable of doing, not what they're capable of doing without a 10 fWAR Morneau or a 45 fWAR Liriano. You want to see the best players in the postseason. The Twins haven't been able to field that team in a decade and a half.
  3. Okay, kids. It's officially that time of year. I usually watch baseball with a calm, reserved attitude. You never get much more than a groan or a "nice" from me. I just pumped my fist and exclaimed "**** YES" multiple times.
  4. For the love of god, Joe, do something.
  5. I wonder what it would be like for this team to make a postseason without one of its five best players injured. It’d be nice to see just once.
  6. I love bunts. I hate sacrifice bunts.
  7. 103mph, lefty on lefty. Yeah, you want to see Joe put wood on the ball there but crikey.
  8. I'd prefer to keep Vielma but it's close enough that I don't really care.
  9. They walked away from a homestand with a 4-2 record. Yeah, it would have been nice to walk away 5-1 but if you win two out of three at home, you've done okay for yourself.
  10. Mattingly was a very good player who played the least important defensive position on the field, though he played it well. Mauer, on the other hand, posted similar numbers while doing it at the most important defensive position on the field. Similar, maybe, but not identical. And the nod has to go to Mauer for doing what he did as a catcher, not a first baseman.
  11. I know everybody's super busy bitching and moaning about who the Twins did or didn't trade but Santana is gutting out a decent game. Other than Judge's homer, most of the baserunners have been bad luck.
  12. Everybody is falling for that slider.
  13. My first reaction to that stat.
  14. Oh no, their plate appearances were terrible. But the striezone appears to be huge tonight. Like absurdly so.
  15. If Thorpe was the only guy who appeared to be ridden hard, I'd probably ignore it. But Tom listed three pitchers in his post, I believe.
  16. My understanding is that it's in danger of becoming a stress fracture if not rested and healed properly. It seems weird for him to be out this long but that makes some sense (going from information read a week or two ago, a little hazy).
  17. I have no problems with his intensity, in fact I appreciate it. I've gleaned information over the years since Mientkiewicz was hired. A quote here, a comment there. Tom even chimed in earlier in the thread with more information about pitch counts, which is troubling. No way in hell should Lewis Thorpe go over 100 pitches multiple times in the minors. It has led me to believing that Mientkiewicz is likely more interested in his win count than organizational development, which puts into doubt his ability to manage a MiLB team. Sometimes, you need to take the loss in any given game for the good of the prospect and organization.
  18. First, I never said analytics is the only thing that matters. But it's been reported several times through various comments that Mientkiewicz isn't only ignorant of modern analytics, he's said enough on the subject to convince me he's hostile toward the idea. And just as if I ignored my boss and wrote code in an outdated language after being told to use something else, I'd expect to be fired for it. Analytics isn't the answer for everything... Hell, Levine isn't even an analytics guy. Even Falvey is a hybrid guy who only leans analytics. The new front office isn't a computer, they believe in traditional scouting and some old-school thought processes along with a dose of modern analytical processes. And if I had an employee who refused to get on board with those ideals, hell yeah I'd fire them. Mientkiewicz had his shot. He was given an entire season of evaluation, just like (almost) everyone else in the organization. And the bosses didn't like what they saw after a full season of play and given what I know of Dougie's baseball mentality, I don't blame them one bit for the decision. I likely would have done the same thing in their position.
  19. It was almost guaranteed to end up at the HoF anyway. It's the most important baseball in Red Sox history. He should have offered it to the Hall immediately. The guy earned close to $15m during his playing career, he doesn't need to extort history for a few more bucks.
  20. Yeah, it's now down to the Angels and Twins and LA has a tough road ahead. The Twins likely only need six or so wins to advance to the WC game and they have seven games against Detroit during that stretch. They should be able to walk away from a depleted Detroit team with five wins, certainly no fewer than four wins. If the Twins don't pull this off, they have no one to blame but themselves. They simply need to show up, play competitive ball, and this thing is likely over.
  21. He's the kind of guy you'd like to keep in the org but also a guy you don't cry over losing. The Twins are going to have a ton of 40-man movement over the next six months and I'm not too worried about Vielma. I'm far more concerned about the bigger names that could be in play.
