  1. I'm a big advocate of this approach. In a 162 game season with postseason aspirations, it's bloody foolish to run your best players into the ground before you even get to September. On a side note, did anyone catch Morneau's comments about the new approach a few weeks ago? It basically boiled down to "I tried to do too much and it hurt me in the second half of seasons. I wish this existed when I played." Good luck getting that kind of honest, inward-looking commentary from Bert or Jack.
  2. Sure, but it doesn't have to be 2019. The team *should* have enough money and talent to make at least one more run.
  3. The Twins haven’t had a losing homestand OR road trip yet.
  4. The thing about “super” utility guys is that they need to be able to play short. I’m not sure Arraez can do that, as scouting reports are pretty iffy on the guy.
  5. Oh, they really blundered this offseason, but trading their young core would be miles worse than that.
  6. There is ABSOLUTELY reason to believe a 22 year old with little upper minors experience will hit poorly in the Majors once pitchers get a look at him. This isn’t beer league baseball. The skill level Arraez is facing is miles better than anything he’s seen in his life. Justin-freakin’-Morneau had a .660 OPS his rookie year.
  7. Astudillo? ... really? And herein lies the problem with this entire conversation: baseball seasons are not 40 games long. They’re 162 games long and rosters see massive turnover due to injury and ineffectiveness. Just like the Castro conversation of six weeks ago, disposing of depth in the first half of the season for no real reason (we’re talking two games a week in a loaded lineup) is a good way to lose baseball games in the second half of the season (a lot of games if you foolishly drop two or more players unnecessarily). Send Arraez back down. Let him play every day in Rochester (no one is talking about his age and lack of experience, both of which will surely be helped by regular playing time) and call him back up if you need him again. Reevaluate the roster on the fly but don’t dump MLB players in May when there’s no good reason to it. Don’t force a decision. Let the decision come to you, as it likely will in this situation (and most others).
  8. He’s the best defensive shortstop on the roster. Polanco barely profiles at the position and Gonzalez is aging. I’m not ready to throw away a competent defensive shortstop and replace him with a guy who doesn’t even play most of his games at short in the minors. If Polanco goes down for an extended period of time, Adrianza is the next best option.
  9. Yep. Cleveland fans should revolt if the front office sells, unless it’s a minor sell with the idea of retooling in the offseason and competing again in 2020 (a real possibility if they’re 8-9 games out of first in mid-July). But selling their young, cost-controlled core would be awful treatment of their fanbase.
  10. Baseball decisions should never be made based on 12 plate appearances. Never.
  11. All this talk about Arraez in the comments and not a single mention of the pure comedy of Polanco and his 89 foot lead off third base last night. This team is delightfully annoying.
  12. Possibly, but more time to breathe would have helped the audience transition. For example, there was so little visual/dialogue cues of just how far the Jorah/Missandei deaths had pushed her to the edge but after all is said and done, it was obvious the writers intended those deaths to be the catalysts for Dany's transition. That's writing. On the other hand, spending more time earlier in the season (a longer season) showing how Dany was capable of the ultimate atrocities she committed (since the writers can't go back and rewrite previous seasons) was also necessary. Her earlier acts across the sea somewhat implied she was capable of such things but they were driven through a pursuit to help others, not the pursuit of helping herself. There's a moral rift between those events that needed to be explained and transitioned in more detail. That's pacing and time.
  13. Definitely. There’s no need to jump him 9-to-1 in a single move.
  14. All of this. I want to see Buxton move up - and I'm sure the coaching staff feels the same way - but I see no need to pressure a guy who has folded pretty hard under previous pressure. Let him get his feet under him and move him up when it feels right, not because statistics "force" the issue. When will that happen? Dunno, I'm not talking to Byron Buxton everyday. But the coaching staff is and they understand the sabrmetric implications of keeping him the nine slot as well as any of us. This isn't Gardenhire's coaching staff and we should keep that in mind when pointing out relatively obvious sabr principles and wondering why they're not doing the obvious thing here... it's probably because they have a reason for doing it.
  15. Hah. That should have been commented out.
  16. All in all, I really liked where it ended up. My only real criticism is the speed at which it got there.
  17. Watched the first 3-4 episodes of Dead to Me on Netflix. The end of the first episode left a sour taste in my mouth but it turned out the show really knows what it's doing. Highly recommend.
  18. That likely isn't an ad issue, as it comes and goes with my phone on a pretty regular basis and has for a long time. I haven't been able to pin down the issue.
  19. That's interesting because I'm looking past Cleveland. Unless the Twins are swept, I'm not worried about them much. I suspect this team can build a 7+ game cushion against Cleveland because Cleveland just ain't that good with their stars (injured) and scrubs (definitely not good) roster.
  20. I bet even Puckett and Mays and Mantle and (fill in your CF of choice here) have had balls bounce out of their glove twice. But twice in two games? Nah, man. That's just ugly.
  21. This team is 28-15, on the verge of 29-15. They are just +1 in pythag, just +1 in BaseRuns (if you look at the numbers, it's fractional and they're basically +0 after tonight). I have to admit that I've been a pretty hard sell on this team and I still expect them to regress. Fangraphs has them at a 91 win pace. I don't disagree. So what's your over/under on that? I'm gonna fan out for a minute and go the over.
  22. I second but I don't know if he'd do it. But he'd be my first choice 11 times out of 10. Hell, I'm going to message him now because it's such an obvious choice and I don't think he'll even accept.
  23. This is actually a really good idea... but not from us. We need new moderators. Let's face it, most of us have been doing it for a long time. We love the game, we love the site, but we don't have the fire to do the work we did five years ago. So let's talk moderators. Any good candidates?
