  1. One of the things that I get and don't get is how Twins fans underrate what Tyler Duffey has done lately. He has literally been the best reliever in baseball for the past two months. Since the beginning of August, he has pitched 17.1 innings and struck out 30 (!!!!!) hitters. THIRTY HITTERS. IN SEVENTEEN INNINGS. Velocity ain't everything. I trust Duffey more than anyone but Rogers, and I'm not sure about that call. And when you can call Rogers, Romo, Duffey, Littel, that's kinda fierce.
  2. Yeah, Odorizzi was pretty good, albeit against a not good offense. As you said, that double was not a double if an actual outfielder is there to field it. I'm not even blaming Arraez but he ain't an outfielder and that ball is a classic "turn you around and jump" type of ball if you don't read it correctly. Rosario catches that without leaving his feet.
  3. So will everyone else. After the completion of the 2019 season, the Twins will control Arraez through the 2025 season if my math is right, and it might not be, because I just watched a terrible game at Target Field and am kinda drunk. But still, that's a hell of a long time to control a player who came out of nowhere and one that has pretty questionable defensive ability and a high (but not outrageous given his skillset) BABIP. Wait it out. See what Arraez does in 2020 as his BABIP levels out to something normal and see how he does in the field and how pitchers adjust to him. There's no reason to jump out in front of this and sign him now.
  4. Arraez seems to be one of those players where the eye test tricks you into believing he's a good defender because his situational awareness is good and he rarely does dumb things while occasionally doing really smart things. I think that situational awareness masks that he has below average range and a meh arm. But hey, having good situational awareness and mediocre athleticism is better than having bad situational awareness and mediocre athleticism. But it also leads me to believe it'll be hard for him to improve much defensively because his problem seems to be physicality, not baseball instincts.
  5. Yes, but the only thing that mattered was the shot Polanco took on Cleveland to win a baseball game.
  6. They were nine games under .500 and ten games out of the division. They did not have a 50% chance of making the postseason. They probably didn't even have a 5% chance of making the postseason.
  7. And that's fine, but that's not what I said.
  8. You're working in a bit of a circle here, Chief. You claim something without evidence, but then demand others prove evidence otherwise. It shouldn't be a revelation that none of us have the data to confirm this either way, though teams are certainly working on it. So maybe instead of demanding evidence to counter your point, maybe realize that your point has no evidence, either.
  9. He's sneaky because he never had a 3-5 year stretch where you just went "wow". He was silently great, if there is such a thing. Like I said, if you tried to guess Beltre's career WAR without being led into it, you'd probably be off by 30-40 WAR.
  10. Agreed, and third base is a good way to bring up this conversation because third is the most unappreciated position in baseball history (fewer 3B in Cooperstown than any other position). To highlight that point, you missed what is literally the most obvious sneaky OF COURSE HE SHOULD BE IN THE HALL candidate, Adrian Beltre. Go ahead and guess Beltre's career WAR off the top of your head. I almost guarantee you that your guess is wrong by 30-40 WAR unless you've already looked at his career win total.
  11. He has hit that number in four of the past six seasons. Read my post again.
  12. Offensively, yes. But I think you're underselling Robinson a bit. Are players better defensively? Of course. But I think past defense translates much more to the modern game than offense, especially once you consider gear like cleats and gloves, never mind metric positioning. But Robinson never faced an 88mph slider, never mind a 95mph fastball. Even if he did, it was once or twice, not five times in a row against a bullpen designed to exploit his handedness. Night after night after night for 162 games.
  13. Maybe, but there's literally no other option for modern ballplayers because the sport isn't littered with .650 OPS hitters and 87mph pitchers anymore. I don't really understand how people fail to realize how inferior the game was in the past. Sure, the competition was great but players in the aggregate were vastly inferior.
  14. I don't think anyone is arguing that he hasn't hit his ceiling but his ceiling is pretty decent, around 2.5-3.0 fWAR. I'll take that for $6-8m on a one-year deal.
  15. Yep. Going into this season, Pineda had made roughly $16m in MLB salary. Guys who have made $16m (plus $8m this season) need to be smarter than that. With that said, if I can nab both Pineda and Gibson for ~$15m combined next season, I do it without hesitating.
  16. It could be a big thing or it may simply be due to the fact that Pineda probably doesn't spend his offseasons in the states. Let's not forget that just because a pill has to be prescribed in this country that the same applies to the rest of the world.
  17. I don't know about that. If he can't pitch effectively for the rest of the season, that's going to make a lot of teams hesitant to give him $10m and a multi-year deal would basically be off the table, at least at the money level Gibson would want to commit to more than one year.
  18. This is why I think Gibson might actually be a really good buy low candidate on a one year deal. If you can get him for $6-7m with the sickness cloud over his head, I roll the dice on that every time.
  19. I think that was contextual. In the first game, Rocco was managing to win. In the second game, Rocco was managing not to blow out his bullpen.
  20. The sad thing is that they can prove they are the best team since 2002 by winning one postseason game. Sigh. The 2000s were so painful.
  21. Before I even finished reading your post, I also came up with $8/$6m.
  22. Oh, it wasn't meant as a snipe at all. We all had reservations about the team after all the recent injuries and they basically wrapped up the division by dominating the second-place team in a doubleheader. The team has a good shot at 100 wins for the season, something most of us have never seen. The Twins are a very good team.
  23. So it's now September 15th and the Twins are well established in first place. When do Minnesota fans actually acknowledge that this is a *very* good team?
  24. This aged well.
