  1. Agreed. While this deal makes Dozier slightly more tradable, I doubt that was even a consideration for the Twins. This is the time to start locking up core players for a return to relevance. Having Dozier signed at a reasonable rate for four years makes it just that much easier to manage payroll over the next four years.
  2. Yes. Given the current bullpen options, I think it's time to see if some of the guys in the upper minors can miss MLB bats.
  3. If Santana posts an OPS over .700 this year and does it at SS, his value is higher in eight months than it is today. He doesn't need to blow .700 out of the water... a .710 OPS will attract buyers. If you can see a "sell high" candidate, so can the 29 other general managers in baseball. Nobody is going to loot the farm for Danny Santana right now for the same reason that Twins fans want to trade him. That's not "sell high". That's just "sell".
  4. Yep, just accidentally hit submit before I typed anything.
  5. I'd have to read up on the details - I've only glanced at the rules - but teams can now trade international bonus space. I think you trade the slot and the receiving team then receives X number of additional dollars to their signing pool.
  6. I believe diehard was saying that Milone could be traded for cap space, not that just trading him would automatically clear cap space.
  7. And before anyone writes in Milone or Pelfrey, remember last season. A good portion of this board had written Gibson out of the rotation because the Twins soooo love their veterans. Personally, I'm pulling for May to get the job. I felt that way last September and nothing has changed.
  8. International signing cap space. With the Twins rumored to be in on what's-his-face (DR SS), they could use more international cap space.
  9. Nothing, if that's what you're trying to do as a pitcher... Scott Baker thrived on a rising fastball that was missed or popped up weakly. If the pitcher isn't trying to elevate but does it on accident, that usually means he's throwing it right down the pipe.
  10. Same here. A side effect of working obscene hours every week and being married to a lawyer who works even more obscene hours.
  11. Uh... I include myself on the side of those "sabr people". It was a simple observation made while slightly intoxicated, nothing more.
  12. It fascinates me to see sabr people laud the walk on offense and dismiss it on defense while dismissing the strikeout on offense and lauding it on defense. They're opposite sides of the same events. If they matter on one side, they also matter on the other. Anyway, random tangent. Carry on, everyone.
  13. Great article, Nick. We all want Meyer in the rotation but after outings like yesterday, it's apparent that work still needs to be done. If a guy is missing the glove by over half a foot several times in two innings, he's going to have a short, brutal experience in a MLB rotation. That's not "effectively wild". That's just "wild". Guys will swing at some of his pitches but they're also going to sit on a bunch of pitches, leaving Meyer with a ton of 4-5 inning starts even when he's effective.
  14. It will be interesting to see how Berrios and to a lesser extent, Stewart and Thorpe, progress through the system. Do the Twins truly have a philosophical issue with promoting pitchers or is there something they don't like about May and Meyer? When dealing with such small data sizes, it's hard to really say... Though there certainly appears to be a philosophical difference between hitters and pitchers.

  16. Yes, but it's a lot more likely that you'll get 2004 Carlos Beltran performance from an elite player like Carlos Beltran than you will Trevor Plouffe.
  17. In no way did I mean to imply that it's impossible to win in the playoffs without elite players, only that it's somewhat harder to do (again, IMO). Elite players can carry you through a game or even a series. Good players carry you through a season.
  18. If used in a proper platoon, they probably won't kill you in center... Schafer is the real question mark here. I'm not worried about Hicks in a platoon, as he had an OPS of .792 against lefties in 2014 and has a career split of .758 against southpaws.
  19. I've always believed that good players get you to the playoffs while elite players (or some luck, which can't be accounted for) help you win in the playoffs. It's a fine line to walk. A team of 2014 Trevor Plouffes will almost surely get you to the playoffs but I'm not sure they'll win once you get there (going by Trevor's offensive numbers, not his overall WAR).
  20. I find it curious that people don't seem to realize how much baseball has changed in the past five years. Offense is WAY down from the early 2000s. Any OPS over .700 is respectable in today's game.
  21. Agreed. It seems to be against the Twins' MO to sign a player with plans to trade him. There are good and bad side effects to that strategy.
  22. It's March of 2015. Torri Hunter is not blocking anyone. Let's hold off complaining about mismanagement until he starts, you know, actually blocking a prospect.
  23. There would be no PR hit if the Twins traded Hunter and called up, say, Buxton. If anything, fan interest would go up, not down... With all but the dumbest of casual fans, anyway.
  24. I don't know if there's a person on this forum who disliked Florimon as much as I did during his time with the Twins. I rarely passed an opportunity to take a swipe at Florimon and his comically bad offense. And I'd seriously consider Florimon in a utility role over Nunez. A futility guy should be defense first, offense... third. Nunez isn't a great bat and is truly terrible in the field.
