  1. "Worth it" is sort of in the eye of the beholder. It's likely few, if any, FA pitchers will end up actually worth the money, particularly those on the higher end of the ability scale. If "worth that kind of money" is the criteria, then we all need to accept the fact the Twins aren't going to sign anything outside of low risk, low reward scrap heap lotto tickets. I doubt Sanchez is going to get 6 years guaranteed, but if that's the price, either compete in that arena or quit pretending you're interested in exploring all options to improve your rotation. Sanchez would likely be the opening day starter for the Twins in 2013. That's the very definition of improving your rotation. I guess it wouldn't hurt to throw out a 4/$52m offer but it probably wouldn't get you far. Anything over 4/$60m does too much long term damage to payroll. It doesn't make sense for the Twins to be playing in that arena.
  2. Yeah, talking overall dollars due to length of contract, not the per year rate.
  3. Without researching it, the number seems like it'd be higher than .25 runs. But I don't think it's enough to make or break a guy like Sanchez. League doesn't matter; the guy is simply not worth that kind of money.
  4. There is nothing to suggest that he will be anything but good. In his last 3 years he has a 2.95 ERA, and showed improvement last year quite a bit. I wasn't trying to predict Dickey's performance... Just stating that no matter what happens (outside of a catastrophic injury), the Twins wouldn't be hurting too badly from the trade (unless they gave up the farm to get him, a near impossibility with JR as GM).
  5. I'm not entirely sold on the idea but Dickey's contract shouldn't be viewed too negatively. If he's mediocre, you can probably re-sign him. If he's good, you can make a qualifying offer and take the pick. If he's bad, well... sometimes, you just run into crap luck.
  6. I was worried that the opposite would be true. I'm just glad that this situation appears to be swinging to the Twins' favor. In a typical market, it would be pretty damned hard to move Span for starting pitching but with teams aggressively pursuing CF help, it might be possible.
  7. Yep, I had pretty much crossed him off. He hasn't proven enough in the AL to warrant even five years, in my opinion. At least Wilson had years under his belt of pitching half his games in Arlington and against American League offenses.
  8. Yeah, not so much. Anything over four years is a mistake when acquiring a pitcher, especially this offseason where there are so many quality arms to be had.
  9. AJ played many more games at catcher. That should count for something.
  10. Dave, if you see one again, let me know the page and location. I thought we had them all cleared out but there could be a straggler or two left in there somewhere.
  11. Yeah, that's my thinking as well.
  12. Oh please oh please oh please... If the Twins can find someone to take Revere, that would be HUGE. I'd be in favor of taking a chance and getting rid of both Span and Hicks to separate teams if the return is even decent.
  13. Great article. It's nice to see all these rumors rounded up and listed together.
  14. It always seemed to me like the Twins were the whipping boys of the Blue Jays. Now I understand why I felt that way. They are.
  15. By the way, sabermetrics FTW. Nate Silver has to be laughing his ass off right now.
  16. I'm damned proud of Minnesota right now. Hell, they almost kicked out Crazy Eyes as well. Maybe 2014.
  17. I'm keeping an eye on the team with cautious optimism. I hope they make the NBA worth watching this season (and winter sports in general).
  18. Okay, thanks. Gonna be tough to troubleshoot this without an Android device but I'll see what I can find.
  19. The site works fine for me in Chrome on both Mac and PC. Are you using the Chrome browser or are you using Chrome OS (ie. a ChromeBook)?
  20. I no longer have an Android device to use as a test platform. The site is working on my iPhone just fine. What browser are you using and how many people are having this problem?
  21. If that's what the Rays are asking, they can keep Shields. He's a good, not great, pitcher who is due to make ~$22m over the next two seasons. It doesn't make sense to pay significant prospects for a guy who isn't priced much below what he'd get on the free agent market. Fangraphs values his performance the past two years as $21.9m and $19.3m respectively. It's quite plausible his value exceeds $18m each of the next two seasons. The going rate on the FA market is about $10m for a decent #3 starter, and usually with a comittment of at least three years. Shields looks very much like a 'number 1', is only 30 years old, and the type of pitcher he is doesn't seem to be prone to suddenly falling off a cliff in their early 30's. TB is looking for pitching because every team is always looking for pitching. I'm just not sure they'll like what we have. Fangraphs valued Span at $17.4m last season. Span is under contract for three years at almost the same price Shields is for two. Again, if they want much more than Span for Shields, I'd pass.
  22. God's Love is probably worth at least one regular season win.
  23. There are a lot of great ideas here. The problem is that don't generate as much commenting as they would if each had their own thread. Also, it makes referring to a plan problematical. Is there a way to systematize this next year -- like have each thread in the forum styled something like: 2013 Off-Season Blueprint - Lonestar We've talked about something like this and it is up for consideration next offseason. We could do some pretty cool stuff with the idea depending on how the site framework lets me manipulate that sort of thing and auto-generate the blueprints.
  24. Name a bad trade Ryan made outside of the Lohse deal, which was more "meh" than "bad" because Lohse was falling apart when he was moved. The one glaring mistake he made during his first tenure was letting Ortiz walk. Yet we need someone to balance his "ineptitude" and you recommend a guy who has been a spectacular failure for ~20 years since leaving the Twins. *bangs face on desk until it's bloody*
