  1. God forbid that we lose Morneau's 0.8 WAR and replace it with Buerhle's 3.2 WAR. That'd really be devastating. Any pitcher the Twins acquire this offseason is going to have flaws. That's just how this works. If you're looking for the perfect pitcher to slot into the rotation and hold out waiting for that Prince Charming to materialize, you're going to end up watching a full season of Samuel Deduno throwing balls over Joe Mauer's head. Is Mark Buerhle the best option out there? Possibly, possibly not. But for the love of Christ, he should be the subject of at least one phone call this offseason.
  2. Stop pretending that Reyes' contract is some kind of steal for the Jays. The dude is owed between $88m and $106m over the next 5-6 years. Here is his WAR for the past four seasons: 0.8, 2.2, 4.7, 2.8... all for the low, low price of ~$17m a season. Whooo, sign me up twice. The Marlins were idiots for handing out that contract in the first place (as they were with the Buerhle contract). He's never going to play up to anything close to the kind of money he's due. The Buerhle contract is far from perfect but if you sweeten the deal a little and give up someone and get the Jays to pay some of the balance in 2014/2015, it might be a viable deal. Perfect? No, but when you need at least three starting pitchers for the upcoming season, it's not a bad place to start because dealing Morneau keeps you payroll-neutral in the short-term, allowing you to go get more arms via free agency. And stop acting as if the Twins taking on $50m in salary this season was ever on the table. There's no way they would have acquired those three guys from the Marlins. It simply wasn't going to happen.
  3. It's not that difficult. I am against the Twins giving up prospects at this point. It's that simple. The Marlins would have required prospects in return and it's unlikely the Pohlad's would have agreed to the kind of money required to keep Johnson, Buerhle, and Reyes. So, the deal was basically a no-go with the Marlins and the salary considerations for picking up both Reyes and Buerhle are ridiculous. They'd do serious long-term damage to this franchise. But now we're talking about the Jays. A Jays team that *might not* want to keep all that salary around for 3+ years. Reyes is only slotted to make $10m in 2013 but that number jumps to $22m in the final year of Buerhle's contract and goes through 2018. The Jays also happen to need a first baseman. Maybe toss in Revere and you're starting to put together a package that isn't so bad and it's a package that doesn't cost the Twins a prospect. Does it hamstring the Twins a bit in 2014 and 2015? Sure, and that's a serious downside of acquiring Buerhle. On the other hand, it also gives the Twins the ability to dish Span off for a lower level prospect instead of worrying about the Major League franchise so much. Is this likely to happen? Probably not, but it should be on the table.
  4. Well, duh. But considering how Toronto only has Johnson for one season, I doubt they're willing to part with him for anything less than a king's ransom. Buerhle and his considerable contract may be a different matter entirely. You hated Buehrle's contract when the Jays acquired it, citing money owed in 2014 and 2015 as reasons the Twins shouldn't have made a similar deal with the Marlins. Now you want to give up Morneau to acquire Buehrle. Weird. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that the contract is more palatable if the Twins can jettison Morneau's $14m contract for 2013. And I've repeatedly mentioned how I don't like Buerhle's contract. You know, like in the post directly beneath the one you quoted. The Marlins' needs didn't line up with the assets the Twins were willing to part with to get Buerhle. Toronto has a very different set of needs, particularly because it appears that they're going all-in for 2013.
  5. Do you think the Twins are really interested to get Buerhle and his big contract? I dont think they really are. They're going to have to spend money on somebody or they're going to end up with nobody. I don't like Buerhle's contract (hate it, actually) but if you can move Morneau's $14m in trade for it, that's a deal you need to consider.
  6. Well, duh. But considering how Toronto only has Johnson for one season, I doubt they're willing to part with him for anything less than a king's ransom. Buerhle and his considerable contract may be a different matter entirely.
  7. Ryan should be on the phone with the Jays to see if they're willing to work a deal that sends Morneau to Toronto for Mark Buerhle. Buerhle's contract is more palatable if it includes removing the $14m Morneau is owed in 2013. The Twins would have to send over more than Justin to make it happen but I think it's an idea worth pursuing. The Jays can't be all that excited about the $50m+ Buerhle is owed over the next three years.
  8. The electoral college essentially forces a two party system on us. It takes far too much effort to ever get a footing when the 2-3% of the votes you're receiving count for absolutely nothing. Combine that with the fact that the GOP and Democrats have a vested interest in never allowing a third party to gain traction and you're looking at a situation where third parties will present an occasional blip on the radar and nothing more (Ross Perot, George Wallace). Still, there's nothing wrong with a statement vote, especially when we live in a political climate where the GOP seemingly runs further off the rails with every passing day.
  9. ahh. shouldnt there be a ruling by some third party arbitrator to decide what the standard formula should be? Early in the process, having competing metrics is a good thing. In time, one will prove more accurate and the industry will move in that direction. The more people you have striving for the same goal with different approaches, the more likely you will be to uncover something that works.
  10. Leaving it open wasn't going to accomplish anything other than letting more people pile on the guy. As it stands, the point was made. Thrylos will have to be VERY careful with his next prediction no matter if that thread stayed open or whether it was closed. Everyone here will remember how this "done deal" went down and respond accordingly next time around. Leaving the thread open only encouraged people to start getting nasty and insulting him. It brings nothing new or interesting to the discussion.
  11. The majority of the difference comes from the defensive side of the ball. BB-Ref uses DRS for their defensive ranking. Fangraphs uses UZR for theirs. WAR has its issues and should not be used to exactly define a player's worth. A 3.5 WAR player is not necessarily worse than a 3.8 WAR player. The metric is still being refined and that's why we see differing opinions and stats from different organizations. WAR works best when used in large numbers (multiple seasons) and when used as a general guideline for a player's performance, not a hard-and-fast rule that perfectly defines their level of play. A 5 WAR player is certainly better than a 2 WAR player but that might not be defined by looking purely at batting statistics. But a 2.1 WAR player may not be significantly different enough from a 2.4 WAR player to matter. Take the metric with a grain of salt. Overall, I like the metric but feel that it still has a ways to go before it's entirely accurate, especially in small sample sizes.
  12. That's absurd. Hunter posted a 5.5 WAR last season after falling to a WAR of ~3 (give or take half a point) in the previous two seasons. Given his age and ever-decreasing range, I think it's almost a given that he will not repeat his 2012 numbers with the Tigers. Still, kudos to Ilitch for not giving up on that quest for a ring. When you're that old and that rich, who gives a damn how much you spend?
  13. I think Theo is taking a page from Beane's book and signing a guy with the plan to flip him in July. It's a good idea for the Cubs. For the Twins? Not so sure... I'd really like to see them put as much money as possible toward guys who will pitch more than one season with the team. This pitching shortage isn't going to end any time soon.
  14. Nolasco's K/9 rate has gone from 9.5 in 2009 to 5.9 in 2012. Ouch.
  15. Ron paul people annoy me. They run around foaming at the mouth about how brain washed and ignorant everyone else must be, but then when it comes time to vote, do the one thing that is basically wasting a vote and write in Ron paul. If they used half that energy to organize and rally around whoever the libertarian candidate is, they as t least have a chance at making some progress for their movement. Instead they are just as if not more guilty of the same idol worship in candidates they decry. Paul jumped the shark when he said that evolution is a theory and dismissed it because of that "fact". The dude was a medical doctor. He knows better.
  16. Okay, I think we've all had a chance to pile on Thrylos by now. Point taken.
  17. Hopefully far, far away. Buerhle is owed a combined $39m in his age 35 and 36 seasons.
  18. I hope the fine people of Miami are organizing a public tar and feathering of Loria before they tie him on a boat pointed toward Cuba. Just deplorable. Worst owner in sports.
  19. Yikes. I hate to lose Baker but that's a lot of money for a guy who may not be ready on Opening Day.
  20. You're missing the point. No one tries to build an 85 win team and says "Well, that's good enough. My job is done." Every team tries to build a 100 win team (within reason). John's point is that it's unimportant whether you win 85 or 95 games. What's important is whether you make the playoffs or not. Once you're in the playoffs, it's a crapshoot... After all, the winner of the supposed "worst division in baseball" went to the World Series again while the Yankees, Rangers, and A's were sitting at home.
  21. Huh, that's strange. The ads on the mobile side of things are really minimal. They have no animation and take up just a few KB of space. If you're having a problem with the mobile skin, there's about a 99.9% chance it's not the ads.
  22. I'm not taking anything away from the Rays. They're one of the better franchises in baseball. But before anyone crowns them a permanent small market darling, they need to win for more than five years. The Twins posted a decade of winning baseball before bad drafting and picking in the bottom portion of the draft drained their farm system to virtually nothing. The Rays are at the five year mark. Will they continue to win or will they sputter as the Twins did after 2010?

  24. If you listen to the podcast, Aaron was dismissing the Twins' division titles pretty casually. From 2008 on, I'd agree that the AL Central has been pretty miserable. Before that, though? No, there were worse divisions in baseball, especially the NL West, where the Padres won the division in 2005 by winning a mighty 82 (!) games. John brought up some points I've been saying about the Rays for a few years now. Their current success was largely built on the backs of several top three drafts. Now that they've spent five years near the top, they're running out of those top draft picks as they bleed off to free agency. The true test of that front office is happening now. Can they continue to be a 90 win team when picking in the bottom ten of every draft? It's something the Twins found they couldn't do after having bottom 15 picks for most of a decade. I'm not knocking the Rays, I think they're one of the better franchises in baseball but it's a lot easier to win when you have a half dozen top five picks on your roster.
  25. By repeatedly saying the AL Central is the worst division in baseball, Aaron is continually ignoring the NL West, which was AWFUL for much of the 2000s. The White Sox won the WS in 2005. The Tigers went to the WS in 2006. The Twins were very good in 2006 and 2010. The AL Central was actually pretty good through much of the 2000s.
