  1. Good one, Brock. It would also be nice if the doubters renounced their televisions and there was no one left to watch Fox News. If you do that, conservatives will just start drowning witches again. Nobody wants that. Especially the witches.
  2. Personally I've always thought the quirky parts of evolution's mechanisms were an intriguing case for intelligent design. I'm not against the idea of intelligent design, actually. You just have to move the scale back billions of years for it to be feasible... and it has to include an evolutionary component or it's just nonsense. Even Einstein left the door open for belief in an omnipotent creator to exist. You go back far enough into the murkiness of universe creation and nothing's off the table, really.
  3. If anything, Seattle should help a guy like Figgins because he's not going to hit the ball over the fence anyway. All that OF space leaves big gaps for him to hit.
  4. I laughed my ass off when Seattle signed Figgins to that contract (lived in Long Beach and followed his entire career with the Angels). No thanks. Figgins is a perfect example of why you dish off speedy, no-power guys the moment they peak in value. They have a tendency to die an ugly baseball death at age 30.
  5. Great article, Jim. One of the best I've read this offseason.
  6. Dave's vitriol toward Nishioka is hilarious.
  7. While I agree that it'd be nice to see the Twins make a move (TODAY, please), it's not terribly surprising to see a guy go off the board early by sticking with his current team and signing a new contract.
  8. Arcia was added to the 40 man roster last offseason. Ah, how'd I miss that? I guess he kinda had to be... Been in the system for what, five years now?
  9. Hicks and Gibson are the obvious choices. After that, it's anyone's guess. If they deal Span or Willingham, what are the odds that Arcia makes the 40 man relatively soon?
  10. Exactly. We still argue a lot about the how's of evolution but the fact that it exists and happens is pretty much settled. Personally, I think every person that doesn't believe in evolution because it's a "theory" (which shows how little they understand about the topic because colloquial theory and scientific theory are very different things) should lose their science card permanently. Hand over your cell phone, car, computer, medicine, etc. Don't like evolution? Good for you. Now science wants its **** back.
  11. Heh. Anyway, great idea, David. I'll be sure to point this out to the writers and see what they think. They're the ones with all the contacts. I'm just the propellerhead.
  12. The price difference between Hardy and Nishioka was negligible in 2011 (without looking at the numbers, pretty sure Hardy was actually cheaper once you count Nishioka's signing bonus). That was an on-field decision and it was a bad one.
  13. Yeah, damn us for trying to earn a little money to offset the time and effort put into this site. Sorry to inconvenience you with that horrible, awful static image.
  14. I'm fairly certain that the field of gynecology contributes nothing to the evolution vs. creation debate, and if being skeptical of evolution defies common sense, then I suspect you haven't really studied the theory much. It isn't hard to poke holes in any of these theories (creation or evolution), and you don't need to visition the Sagan Institute or the ICR to do so. Every biological science is so intertwined with evolution at this point that you can't really separate the "theory" without all of biology falling to pieces. And yeah, I've studied evolution a bit. I've taken anthropology courses and do a fair amount of reading on the subject to keep somewhat current. And you should stop referring to it as a theory, particularly in the same sentence where you call creationism a "theory". One is a hypothesis (and a bad one at that) while the other is a fully-formed scientific theory. And yeah, evolution is pretty much common sense at this point. The mountains of evidence that supports it and the amount of science based on it is undeniable. It exists. It's real.
  15. I've always said that Smith did a pretty good job with the minors, drafting, and international minor league players. He offset that with an absolutely abominable job handling the major league roster. He traded away the Twins best pitcher and best young pitcher in the same offseason. Hardy for Hoey offset any goodwill from the Hardy/Gomez deal. Ramos/Capps. Nishioka. He had one good offseason before 2010 but other than that, almost every deal he made was horrible for the Twins.
  16. Eh, me neither but I think he'll be serviceable. The Twins just need a lot of pitchers, period.
  17. I have zero use for Pavano at this point. With that said, if you don't count on him to be in the rotation (and therefore, it doesn't impact who you sign or don't sign), signing him to a minor league contract may not be the worst idea in the world. But I'd rather see the team move on entirely.
  18. Yep, losing Baker stings because it meant the team had one less rotation spot to fill going into December. I fully understand why the Twins weren't interested in giving him a one year $5.5m guaranteed contract but it still hurts.
  19. I might miss the Baby Gots forum more than anything else. It absolutely doesn't fit in with the idea behind Twins Daily but I'll be damned if it wasn't funny to move a thread in there whenever I got annoyed.
  20. There seems to be a gross misunderstanding of what makes scientific ideas a law versus theory. Spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with observable evidence. Evolution is not a theory because it cannot be verified, it is a theory because it explains how something happens. http://wilstar.com/theories.htm In regards to Paul's comments, I tend to not vote for people who pander to the public by stating inaccuracies that directly contradict common sense and their personal field of study. I don't care how much I agree with the rest if their policy; if I can't trust then to get the easy stuff right, I'm not going to trust them with the hard stuff.
  21. I hate to sound like an apologist but it's early. If mid-December rolls around and they haven't made a significant move, then I'll be concerned.
  22. I don't know... Depending on how this past draft pans out, the team could look pretty good in pitching prospects (or at least adequate). But... you can never have too much pitching.
  23. Well said. I find this issue maddening. Both sides have little concern for bringing this complicated, difficult moral issue to a resolve. They seem for more intent on being divisive. One day I'd actually like to hear us talk about really unique ways to make abortions unnecessary - whether that be with technology, male contraception, or whatever. The problem is that the most vehement pro-lifers are also the ones who strongly resist any type of progressive movement toward limiting abortions that doesn't involve attaching a car battery to peoples' genitals every time they think about sex.
  24. The strange thing about abortion is that Protestant religions either ignored it or openly supported it in the wake of Roe v Wade. This wasn't an issue until the mid 80s outside of the Catholic Church. And I find that kind of hypocrisy maddening. The pro life movement was largely born out of the desire to create a wedge issue, not out of any real concern for life.
  25. One of those players signed a $16,000,000.00 contract. The other signed a $16.00 contract.
