Oy. This line of reasoning makes my head spin. So if a company lies to you and intentionally deceives you, baiting you to join a company, work there for years, and then retract promises, you have a right to leave? Since when are companies above keeping their promises? If a worker is promised something, they deserve to receive it, no matter how ludicrous the promise. That's how contracts and promises work in a civilized society. Unions will have a reason to exist (and should exist) as long as corporations and large employers exist. That should be obvious to anyone and hell, I don't even like most unions (and have never been a member of one). Safe working conditions have nothing to do it with it. Unions exist to push back against the corporation, to levy worker power against corporate power. It's how the free market does and should work. Again, I do not understand modern conservative rhetoric that is anti-government, pro-business, and... anti-union. Without government intervention, unions are the most logical agency to defend the workforce. Actually, they're the only agency left to defend the workforce. Oh, wait... Yeah, I do understand why conservatives are anti-union... It's because they vote Democrat. It has nothing to do with free markets, fair policies, or government intervention. It's politicking at its basest and most nauseating level. And people buy into this crap. It's contradictory and nonsensical. -

I'm sure glad people on the internet have curt and easy answers to all of life's problems. After all, it's not like peoples' futures are at stake here or anything. A simple "get it in writing!" will teach those troglodytes their lesson. After that, screw 'em. -
I know there were a few bouts of stupidity here and there that I didn't ban but you're right, the number probably didn't even go to 15... More like 10.

You guys sure have a high bar for disappointment for a guy who has less than 300 Major League plate appearances. If the guy hits with a league-average bat for RF (which is somewhere around .750, I'd wager), we should all be very happy with that. Moving forward, you'd like to see that number inch toward .800 but not in his first full season of play. That's just unreasonable.

As much as I like Justin, he only partially controls his future with the Twins. Even if he posts a nice comeback year, a lot is riding on how Parmelee, Hicks, and Arcia perform in 2013. If Parmelee posts an .800 OPS (I don't think it will happen, but it's possible) and one or more of the outfielders performs well, Justin may be left on the outside looking in. Of course, the team might also choose to trade Willingham instead. Too many variables at this point to predict where Justin will end up.

We need more guys like Correia on the team. Guys who consistently (never) go out and throw over (under) 200 innings, which Kevin has done multiple (zero) times in his career. Back on topic... I'm a little surprised by this. I wanted to see the team re-sign Baker but now it looks like they were right to not waver on signing a deal without a team option.

Except that BYTO is "gone" in the same sense that Twins Geek, Seth Speaks, Nick's Twins Blog, and Over The Baggy is gone... Really, it just changed domains. Whereas DTFC is gone, period. Anyway, this isn't worth arguing about.

That makes way more sense. A poster really had to go above and beyond to get the ban on BYTO. In six years, maybe ~15 people were banned from that site and I think I only banned 3-4 of them.

I just read through the meltdown thread. I was crying, I was laughing so hard. A couple of drinks and that thread are a perfect combination. Too bad it can't be posted here, as it would break very forum rule we have on TD, along with a few we haven't thought up yet.

I don't think it's laziness, I think it has to do with the reaction time needed to play third base. A lot of guys have a hard time being 15 feet closer to the plate, playing a position where the ball is often scorched at the defender, and a position where it's harder to see the ball coming off the bat against righties. Can Plouffe adjust to that? Dunno. -
DEEP BREATHS. There is absolutely no reason to be combative about this, folks. This is one of the problems we're trying to stop with the new rules in place. There is absolutely no damned reason to turn this into an inane argument over semantics.

Levi, this is a relatively new board. I know you're a little sour on what happened to you and I do sympathize a bit with your situation. I also understand other admins/mods frustration and why they imposed the ban. We're continually having discussions about this situation and how to make it more consistent for everyone involved. And that takes time. It will never be perfect but as we get a better feel for things (both the admins and the moderators), I think we'll sort it out and become more consistent.

Pensions are definitely an awful idea. After a time, it creates built-in expenses that can drive a company into the ground and reduces production per dollar spent. I'm not saying unions are always right, just talking about the oddities that define modern conservatism. I guess I kind of highjacked the thread... -

Which is fine if you ignore the fact that the best way for workers to fight for their rights is to get together, collectively agree upon terms, and fight for their own self-interest. After all, isn't capitalism based on protecting our own self-interest? That's the logical fallacy that bothers me most. Some are supposed to fight for self-interest as an entity (corporations), but others are not (unions). It doesn't make sense. -

Exactly. Before the industrial revolution, unions were needed (obviously), but not nearly to the extent they were after corporate behemoths began to dominate the landscape. Once a few large players could control such a large portion of the workforce, it was only logical that worker-based organizations would rise up to combat them and fight for their own interests. Just one of the fallacies of modern conservatism that I can't wrap my head around. There are so many opposing viewpoints in conservatism that, when compared to one another, don't add up to a cohesive view of the world. Free markets without unions, end government welfare but make no attempt to control unwanted pregnancies, marginalize the middle class in favor of the wealthy, continue ad nauseum. -
John brings up a good point about bolts loosening on their own over time. We had a real problem this offseason and had to do something about it. It was our first offseason, the Twins had (by and large) a poor offseason in the free agent market, and there was very little positive to talk about moving forward. In that environment, posters tend to turn on one another and it nurtures an environment of pettiness, bickering, and general idiocy. But, we're back to watching baseball. I always thought the board would straighten up a bit when we actually had something to talk about and it did (along with some very welcome help from the moderation crew in Snepp and Glunn). In time, we'll probably loosen the reins a bit. But in the short-term, we had to impose some rules that were more Draconian than any of us would have preferred to implement to get the board back on track and not an eyesore to ownership, advertisers, and fans who just want to talk about Twins baseball. In some ways, I feel bad that this had to happen, as several posters who I consider friends have been banned, warned, and generally tread upon more than I'd like. But, above all else, it had to be done for the betterment of the entire site. We're not unreasonable people but looking at the grand scope of things instead of "this is my personal playground", some tough decisions had to be made and some feathers were ruffled. It is my hope that we won't see this kind of lordship over the forums again and that the board has seen how we plan to steer conversations and attempt to set the tone of the forums going forward.

Not in this incarnation of the site. My primary goal with this redesign was to clean up a lot of the "mess" that vBulletin installs by default. I wanted a site that was as sparse as possible and focused on content over (mostly frivolous) bells and whistles. That's why the blog listings, online light, and other information has been removed. I wanted to go even further with it but ran out of time (I was under some pretty intense deadlines with this redesign).
