  1. BYTO (Battle Your Tail Off) is the forum I ran for six years before merging it (and my skillset) into Twins Daily. As for the car crash... Welcome to the Internet. The comments here are tame compared to most. Ever read RubeChat? Or, god forbid, YouTube?
  2. Yes. Unless you also want to complain about that Albert Pujols guy. He hits into double plays all the time. At which point, everyone realizes that you are just an unreasonable person and ignores you.
  3. Did you really just compare low A ball strikeout numbers to MLB strikeout numbers?
  4. I assume you mean Lars & The Real Girl? Good movie.
  5. I'll be curious to see if the show turns into a hot mess like the books. Too many characters, too many divergent storylines, too little payoff. Martin's idea of character development is Hydra-esque... Each character (barring 2 exceptions) remains the exact same until he/she is killed, at which point that character is replaced by two other characters. Rinse, repeat. But I'm enjoying the hell out of the show. It's perfectly cast.
  6. RBI? Really? (hint: RBI are far too correlated with team performance to be useful as an individual stat of merit)
  7. I don't see the rush with Sano. His bat is certainly prodigious but it seems he could still use a little refinement, particularly in the strikeout department (it will be interesting to see how it plays out as he rises in the minors and sees better off-speed stuff). And if it takes 6-12 months extra to see him in a Twins uniform but he'll be at the hot corner instead of first, I think that's worth waiting for.

    The DH

I don't mind the Twins rotating through the DH. If their best hitter wasn't a catcher who has been known to fatigue and/or get injured, I might feel differently about it.
  9. I think #3 applies to me because it's March of 2013 and I just found this entry.
  10. Completely different scenarios. Morneau suffered from injuries but is still relatively young, Paulie is just getting old.
  11. Maybe it's just me but I'd refrain from calling Hicks a better player than Span until he actually swings at a pitch that counts. There's a good chance Aaron will OPS at .600 for two months before being sent back down to AAA to work on contact issues. He's not a better player than Span until he plays better than Span.
  12. To me, "hitting" is anything that happens from the time the batter steps into the box until he makes an out or is safe on base. Otherwise, the distinction becomes a mess. "Well, he's a good hitter but he doesn't have much power and he walks a lot but has the speed to turn a double into a triple" compared to "Well, he hits for no average and is slow on the bases and doesn't draw walks but hits for a ton of power". If you start breaking up hitting into smaller elements, it stops being a comparison of players because there are too many variables to track.
  13. There's just no way to rationally place Mauer any lower than #3. Cabrera is a given. Fielder is probably a given. But who could you rank above Joe after those two guys? He's an on base machine... The best in the league. And while chicks dig the long ball, the guy who doesn't make outs still still more valuable and nobody in baseball is better at avoiding the out than Joe.
  14. I had to look up your IP address just to make sure you weren't a certain mullet-sporting hockey blogger from St. Cloud. Your irrational Mauer hatred isn't quite as professionally troll-y as his yet but keep at it, tiger. You'll get there someday.
  15. Yeah, Cabrera has to go above Mauer.
  16. Which they won't. Two month rentals of first basemen do not pull down elite prospects. They might be able to get a moderate upside guy who is very raw but they won't get more than that for Justin (unless he's posting a 1.000 OPS or something silly like that). Still, it'd be better than nothing, I suppose.
  17. It's far from obvious that Hicks is ready for the bigs. I'm not against giving him a shot in CF after Mastro's injury and Benson's failure but let's not act as if he's the second coming of Mike Trout. Hicks has never played an inning above AA and as recently as last offseason, many were questioning whether he'd pan out at all.
  18. I'm actually okay with payroll going down in some situations. If the Twins post a 75 win season in 2013, the kids look promising, Morneau falters, and they have a clear path forward, I'd deal with a drop in payroll short-term to let the kids play. But when the team is coming off 90+ loss seasons, it's really hard to swallow a payroll drop when there are so many glaring holes on this roster. The middle infield was ignored. The rotation was patch-worked together (being quite generous). And while the Mets and Cubs are having issues with their FA pitchers, look at the Twins. They're not doing any better. Pelfrey is a huge question mark. Harden isn't ready. Diamond is hurt and will miss a few weeks. Deduno has a groin issue. This rotation could be on the fast track to repeating 2012 with an injury to Worley.
  19. I think it's unfair for people to expect a .900 OPS season from Justin. It's not out of the realm of possibility but it is extremely unlikely. For me, the make or break number is .800. If he can get to that point, I'll be satisfied... Anything over that would be fantastic. And given his performance after the wrist injury last season, I think that number is pretty reasonable to expect from him (and is only .030 higher than 2012). Of course, he could also go completely bonkers and post a .950 season. Or he could hurt his wrist in the middle of April and post a .700 season. Anything is possible with the guy.
  20. Oh, I'm not saying they were monster months. In fact, I've said many times that people are overblowing his second half numbers. But they were better, which lends weight to an expected improvement. And maybe even more importantly, he looked better. Not very sabr-ly of me to say but his second half ABs looked a lot better, particularly against lefties.
  21. His second half was dragged down badly by September. In July and August, he OPSed at .850, followed by a .660 OPS in September. Not terribly surprising for a guy who hasn't played a full baseball season in three years.
  22. Yep. These companies do a masterful job of spinning out "daughter companies" to hide profits. For example, many teams "outsource" parking revenue to a company also owned by the same org that owns the team (or a family member or something). The same could be done with certain vendors in-stadium. All of that revenue would not factor into this number.
  23. A certain amount of "gut" needs to go into any good ranking system. Numbers won't tell you that Justin was dealing with a brain injury for the past 2 1/2 seasons. They won't tell you that he had his first healthy offseason since 2009/2010 this winter. They won't tell you that he feels completely healthy for the first time in years. Numbers are great but they don't tell you much about the larger, sweeping issues a player may (or may not) be dealing with that go outside the box scores. None of those things mean that Morneau is going to be better than Konerko or Swisher in 2013. But once you factor those things into the equation, it certainly makes the argument a reasonable one.
  24. What makes you think we want a bunch of Texans muckin' up our state? We'll take the Mexicans. Somebody else can take the Texans.
