Tim Shibuya was selected by the Twins in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft out of UC, San Diego. By the end of his collegiate career, he held several notable school records (wins, strikeouts, and innings) and led some of the most successful teams in school history with two appearances in the DII College World Series. He was the first UCSD player drafted in eight years (followed 5 rounds later by teammate Guido Knudson by the Tigers). Tim graduated with a degree in Pharmacological Chemistry.

He had an outstanding year for short-season Elizabethton last season and was named Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year. Notably, he pitched the first seven innings of a combined (with Garrett Jewell and Steven Gruver) no hitter against Greeneville. They just missed out on the perfecto due to two catchers interference calls and a Sano error.

This year, Mr. Shibuya is pitching for Beloit and has endured some ups and downs through four games. It appears that he has been victim to some poor fielding--only 5 of the 15 runs surrendered have been earned. His most recent start was his best so far going 5.2 scoreless innings.

It has been fun following Tim's career after leaving UCSD. I made it to a couple UCSD Triton games since moving to La Jolla, and I think Tim pitched one of them. He wrote an interesting blog about his first season of pro ball, and has contributed to this site this season. I wish him the best and hope he can delay needing to put that Pharmacological Chemistry degree to use!

Do you have an exact pronunciation of his last name? One can only hope it is "Sh - BOOYAH". I will continue to say it that way until I get corrected.

Hmmm, I've always pronounced it "shee-BOO-yah" without even thinking about it--I'm trying to remember if I'd heard it out loud from anyone except Seth. Also, here's a video of him in a Snappers excursion.

April 29th Update:

Shibuya's outing against the Dayton Dragons started fantastically, but ended with a no-decision. In the first 6 innings, he struck out ELEVEN batters, walked none, and allowed just two hits. The top of the seventh inning, however, went single, single, E-pickoff, RBI groundout, RBI single, [Tonkin relieves] single, double steal, RBI single, groundout, IBB, groundout. All three runs were earned and charged the Shibuya, but it seems it could have been worse. After letting the Dragons tie it up 3-3, the Beloit Snappers walked off on Adam Bryant's RBI single.

Based on his impressive 22:4 K:BB ratio and worrisome 30 hits in 24 innings, he seems to fit a familiar mold for pitchers in the Twins system.

Tim Shibuya has had two straight decent starts that resulted in no-decisions.

Against Kane County on May 5th, he was relieved after a long bottom of the 6th when the Snappers took a 4-3 lead. To that point, he gave up just a single and 2 home runs, working around one walk, one hit batsman and 2 of the 3 base runners that reached on errors. (The third error preceded the first of the HRs making only 2 of the 3 runs earned.) He struck out six. The Snappers eventually lost 7-4.

Against Peoria on May 10th, Shibuya lasted just 5 innings scattering four hits, two walks, a hit batsman, and two errors. He gave up 2 runs (one earned). He struck out just two and walked a season-high-matching two batters after posting an impressive 28:5 K:BB ratio coming into the game. The Snappers retook the lead and held on to win 6-5

May 15th Update: Complete-Game Shutout!

Tim Shibuya pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering just three hits. He struck out nine (walking none) earning raves from the visiting Clinton radio play by play guy who mentioned awkward third-strike swings at breaking balls that ended up in the opposing batter's box. The game ended when Tim Shibuya himself scrambled and caught a popup in foul territory. Cody Christie named him the Pitcher of the Day and pointed out that only one LumberKing made it as far as second base all evening.

LumberKing starter Jordan Shipers matched Shibuya through seven scoreless, but the Snappers scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 8th when a LumberKing reliever walked two and yielded an RBI single to JD Williams. Neither team committed an error. This wrapped up a 4-game sweep in Beloit that gave the Snappers sole possession of first in the Midwest League's Western Division.

It was a rough evening for Tim Shibuya and the Beloit Snappers. After pitching a complete game shutout last time out, Shibuya lasted just four and a third yielding eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, one walk, and two hit batters. In the end, the Snappers were shut out 12-0 and almost managed as many errors (4) as hits (5).

Today's Beloit Daily News article by Jim Franz provides some Shibuya news. He has been moved to the bullpen and made his first appearance last night in relief after Steven Gruver's poor start. Shibuya pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with no hits or walks and struck out two. His only 'blemish' was a hitting Javier Baez (who had homered in his previous at bat).

Tim Shibuya returned to the rotation today and had a nice outing. He held the Cedar Rapids Kernels scoreless for six innings, giving up just one hit, one walk, and two HBPs. According @JimCrikket, Terry Ryan made the trip down to Iowa.

In Baseball America's list/discussion of the top pitching game scores of the year so far, Shibuya's complete game shut-out tied for first for low A leagues. The only other Twins minor leaguer among the top 20s was Liam Hendriks with the second best game at AAA.

Tim Shibuya was placed on the 7-day disabled list a couple days after his two-inning, two-runs-allowed outing. I haven't heard anything about the injury.

Has anyone heard any news about Tim Shibuya? After going on the DL midseason, I heard at one point he was rehabbing in Florida. Towards the end of the season, I saw he was back with Beloit doing his side-gig of acting as Miguel Sanó's translator for interviews. Seth left him off his top 50 prospect list.
