Here is a very interesting interview with Keith Woolner the head of the Indians analytics division (and Ben Alamar, OKC Thunder). I found this passage to be the most interesting but there are a few more nuggets if you care to finish reading the Q & A.

 

KW: My title is director of baseball analytics, and in that role, I manage a team of analysts and programmers who support baseball decisionmaking by organizing, analyzing, and presenting information. We help baseball operations put the best possible team on the field. In many cases, that involves developing statistical models to measure player value, forecast future performance, and answer questions about game strategy and tactics.

Please show me where you derived such an idea?

 

Fair enough, that was a bit over the top. Sorry.

 

I have no idea where the clubs get their statistical information from. I would assume it comes from the mlb office for official stats and the clubs plug those spreadsheets into their computers to print the numbers they want to look at.

I found an interesting interview I linked to above that mentioned some unexpected sources of data (I think you might even like these ):

Beyond the data collected in-game, we have many years’ worth of scouting reports, physiological tests, medical histories, psychological profiles, coaching assessments, contract data, service time records, arbitration case histories, negotiation records. We also have thousands of hours of recorded video. All these sources can be useful in analyzing and forecasting both team and player performance.

 

I would assume, since the article is specifically about statistical analysis, that they are trying to dig deeper into those sources using statistics. These are unlikely to be found in a useful format. These would have to be converted into the necessary format that can then be incorporated into a database. So it isn't all just "plug and play" with databases.
