The gap in production against left handed starters and right handed starters has gotten much larger than it was earlier in the season. I also see that there is article on TD that advocates for trading for another right handed hitter.  Does nobody pay attention. The biggest problem against left handed pitchers is the switch hitters. None of the 3 do well against left handers, plus they are generally somewhere in the middle of the lineup. They tend to kill rallys on a consistent basis.

I really dislike this consistent effort to turn every left handed hitter into a platoon partner. They seem to be doing it to Roden now. I have no idea if he can hit left handed hitting at an acceptable level at the major league level. I rather doubt we will ever find out.

Judgement Call - Tonight we had a left handed starter Basso who went for 2.1 innings followed by a right hander Barnett who threw 3.1 innings. This game really needs it's own category but I'm not creating one so I'm going to place this game in the right handed starter category. The reason it goes in the RH starter category is because the lineup was a right handed starter lineup. We have three lefty hitters and all 3 of them were in the starting lineup. Along with all 3 switch hitters. The bench was filled with right handed hitters.

July 25 - Mason Bartnett (Brady Basso) - Won - 2 Runs Scored

Lineup Composition: 3 RH 3 Switch 3 LH

Season Record vs RH Starter: 40-34

Season Average Runs Scored vs RH Starters: 4.92

I get the impression that there are a lot who are paying attention to other things.

I'm not convinced that platoons do what they are intended to do in regards to wins and losses... but I struggle to convince.

You are correct. You are seeing it. The three switch hitters on our roster rank #1 Bell, #2 Lee and #6 Caratini in AB's vs lefties and all 3 are below average against them. Our #3 most AB's against lefties is Keaschall and also below average against them. We have 4 above average and they rank #4 Martin, #5 Buxton, #7 Clemens and #10 Jeffers in AB's against lefties.

Granted Buxton and Jeffers have been hurt and that will drag those AB's down. However... we have given 426 AB's to below average performers against lefties to and 315 to our only 4 above average guys... why... The hand of the starter is the primary method to determine who starts a ball game. Managers tend to just lock in... just as long as they are standing in the correct batters box.

I'm just not convinced that it is helping produce wins and losses.

No matter how good Roden is and that is yet to be determined. He won't yield decent trade value in the future if ... if... he manages to keep a 4 or 5 year career and if is the key word.

Baby steps. Sunday against a left handed starter neither Bell or Caratini started, or actually played at all. Lee played but was in the bottom third of the order. The Twins scored 11 runs.  Baseball is completely unpredictable from game to game. It is unlikely that not playing Bell and Caratini really was the reason they scored 11 runs. Especially since the left handed starter wasn't in the game long. But, maybe Shelton won't feel so obligated to start them against every single left handed starter.

I thought the series vs the A's was a testament to the unpredictability of baseball.

The Athletics have the worst pitching staff in the American League based on ERA vs the best offense in the American League based on OPS and Runs Scored. You'd be more apt to guess 10 runs scored by the Twins instead of being shut out on Friday and only two runs on Saturday before exploding for 11 runs on Sunday against a left handed starter.

Gotta love baseball.

Interesting finale of the Royals series.

Sometimes you just have to put 4 runs in the left handed starter column because 4 runs were scored and a left hander started the game.

Although...

1. That was a left handed hitter homering off a left handed reliever for the grand slam that produced all 4 runs.

2. That was a right handed reliever that produced 3 baserunners to load up the bases.

3. That was a left handed starter that allowed 1 hit and two walks and zero runs through 8 innings.

Despite those 3 points. 4 runs scored was be added to the left handed starter stats when it was really close to being nil.

Now before anyone calls their SABR buddies to point out how ridiculous this season long exercise is because of results like yesterday.

I'm tracking Wins and Losses, Lineup Composition and Runs Scored per game based on the throwing hand of the starter. That's it.

I'm doing this because the starting lineup is set primarily based upon what hand the starting pitcher throws with. There are minor adjustments that are made day to day but it is beyond a shadow of a doubt that the starting pitcher and the hand that he throws determines the starting lineup.

Why is this important: It's because... the starting lineup does the overwhelming majority of the work in any game, they have the overwhelming majority of PA's, they make the overwhelming majority of defensive plays, they do the majority of the baserunning in the game... and the starting lineup also determines who is available to pinch run and pinch hit in any given game... and the reason the manager or front office makes these type of decision... is too... ultimately... produce... Wins... and not produce losses.

In other words... anything that influences the starting lineup is rather important and there is nothing that influences the starting lineup more than the throwing hand of the starting pitcher.

I can easily access stats that tell me how the team does against left handed or right handed pitching overall... but I can't find stats that tell me win/losses vs left handed or right handed starters so I'm tracking it myself and sharing it for the 1 or 2 people who might be interested. I understand that the pitching in any game has perhaps a bigger influence but I am not tracking that.

Anyway... the Twins were shut down by a left handed starter yesterday. Dominated by a left handed starter...  it was one strike from going down as a zero and it was a left handed hitter who hit the grand slam off a left handed reliever so... it's a 4 going down in the books because:

Throwing Hand of the Starter, Wins, Losses, Lineup Composition and Average Runs scored per game is what I'm tracking.

I want to know at the very least if it's working.
