"Lately" is my distinguisher. He's definitely got some good ones, but my taste leans toward the '90s and earlier. 

I'd vote for Kristofferson off of "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "Why Me", but I think "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" is one of the greatest songs ever written.
