American League Rookie of the Year

I was browsing AL rookie stats today on MLB.com and realized there isn't anyone in the league having a breakout rookie season. Hicks leads the AL in most batting categories including HR, R, RBI, and SB. Would they ever give the ROY to someone that hits under .200? Even on the pitching side there's no one whose stats jump off the page. Actually Ryan Pressly's numbers are amongst the most impressive of anyone with that 1.24 ERA and 23 K.

 

I think if Arcia sticks around the rest of the season he's got the most impressive overall rookie line and would have a good shot at the award.

Hicks put himself in a big hole with that BA, Rookie of the Year still seems to be judged by traditional stats. I'd guess Arcia has a better shot but Jurickson Profar is now up as is Mike Zunino, Chris Archer, Jackie Bradley and Will Myers will be soon. Aside from Zunino, they play for winning teams which might help their cause.

I think it's unlikely that Hicks finishes the season with a BA under .200.

 

With that said, he'd have to really light it up in the second half to get serious consideration for RotY.

With the Super-2 deadline behind us now, I almost expect both the AL and NL ROY to end up being call-ups from around this time. Like mentioned in the original post, none of the rookies that started on a ML roster this year really took off.

The AL rookies are amazingly bad so far.....there was an article on ESPN or CBS about it this week, and they were struggling to come up with a name, maybe it was Fangraphs*
