So let's say coaches and managers stop wearing numbered uniforms. What happens after another ten numbers are retired? They'll be right back where they are now. And eventually so will just about every team, especially the original 16 franchises. Even the Twins with their relatively few retired numbers were almost out of available numbers for spring training. The solution is obvious. Stop retiring numbers. We already have another way to commemorate notable players: the team's hall of fame. That is plenty fine.
