Berardino profiles Twins' mysterious stat guy

Putting an employee into a position to fail then poking fun at him when it happens is poor managerial skills.

Again we see a high level Twins employee mocking Goin for some eccentricities.

To me these quotes making me uncomfortable as both are very close, if not crossing the line, into bullying territory. When you are making fun of a coworker you clearly no longer respect that person and ultimately their work, even if it is at a subconscious level.

Together these quotes give the impression that there is a clique within the Twins organization that Mr. Goin is on the outside of.

Yah Terry Ryan has always struck me as the headstrong bullying type.

Ryan no, but Gardy on the other hand....

Good thought, just posted the same article. Well worth a read.

My side point is that there really are some solid beat writers covering the Twins right now, from Berardino to the Strib to the guys at 1500 ESPN.

This. I posted on this on first reads of them when both new beat writers began covering the Twins in the offseason. Twins written coverage had clearly reached a dead-end, along with the teams' performance, the last couple of years. Their writing reflects refreshing points of view and new sources of information. Overall, it's like sitting down to prime rib and a Idaho baked potato versus the White Castle and french fry coverage we've recently become accustomed to.

And they actually appear to proofread their copy before publishing!

speaking of stats...

Rotation ERA going into today was 26th...but let's talk about the strong pitching...

Gardy is always so proud about how few walks his pitching staff. The obsession with that is practically cult-like with this club. How about batting average against, Gardy? 29th in baseball (30th if talking about rotation BAA).

But hip-hip-horray, we don't walk people. Teams are too busy hitting the ball to walk...

I was thinking about this when they said on tonight's broadcast that the Twins had allowed the fewest stolen bases - why risk being thrown out when you can your way around?

Actually, Mauer's thrown out most of the guys attempting to steal.

5 out of 8, which is good, but definitely in the bottom chunk of the league in attempts against.

I don't think you get the humor in it. They're clearly messing with him, but they trust his judgement. Gardy listened enough to him to put Mauer in the 2 hole and Willingham in the 3 hole because they get on base. That's a significant change for him. The way I read it, they're using self-effacing humor to call out the fact that they're not tech savvy. It doesn't mean they can't learn from him, but he's the expert.

What humor? This isn't 2 buddies joking around at a bar. This is a boss and his employee at a table with a bunch of journalists. Or in the case of Gardy it sounds like Goin wasn't even there to defend himself if he wanted to. That is just really poor behavior by two upper level Twins employees. Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances that we don't know about but those two anecdotes do not suggest an inclusive atmosphere.

"Ask Jack"

Sounds like the tag-line the FO uses to keep from being embarrassed. The Twins were deeply embarrassed by the Twinkke Town's interview a few years ago, and I think Ryan is using this to deflect qyestions
