freshinthehouse Verified Member Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 Inspired by the National Baseball Card Day article, i figured I'd start a sports card thread. Did any of you get back into this during quarantine? Or have some of you never quit? I got back in during the height of covid. Mostly vintage stuff, though i bought a few boxes of newer stuff. about 90% of the stuff i got was vintage basketball, though i did delve into some Twins stuff. I picked up some cool AK rookies, as well as Royce Lewis. I also picked up some Byron Buxton stuff hoping this would be his big year (whoops!).
ashbury Verified Member Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 I got back into it, in an odd way. Pulled out several moving cartons of vintage cards from our storage area, and winnowed down the collection to what I was willing to pay the movers to ship back with us on our return move last month. I was pleasantly surprised to net a few hundred dollars from a very good dealer, on the assorted junk I was willing to part with - probably doesn't pay very well for having lugged those many pounds of cardboard with me through my adult life, but better than dumping them at the recycling center which I had been led to expect was the fate for 90% of the more recent stuff. It was tremendous fun to sort through it all. And what I did choose to keep represents a sort of "time-capsule" to myself, for enjoyment the next time I pull them out and go through them. A large part of the sentimental value is the cards that my brother and I accumulated during our formative years. The rainbow of Topps issues from one year to the next - orange, blue, pink, green, yellow - never fails to bring a smile.
freshinthehouse Verified Member Posted August 9, 2021 Author Posted August 9, 2021 Agreed. Even though 99.99% of my childhood baseball card collection has no value, the warm and tingly nostalgia vibes they provide are nearly priceless.
