Lucas Seehafer PT Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Hey all. Thought I'd post this here as well since I just put it out there for the Twitter sharks to destroy. Since the Twins Daily staff recently put together our updated top prospects list, I thought it would be fun to put together a list of my own (I did participate in voting for the Twins Daily rankings). Below is a tweet that contains my tier list, outlining whom I believe to be among the Twins' top 35 prospects. The athletes are listed in alphabetical order rather than "ranking." Let me know what you think!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 That's some aggressive rankings for the number of top 100 prospects. Very. Overall though, the tiers make a ton of sense.
roger Verified Member Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Interesting, Lucas. Like this with the tiers also. Would disagree with having Julien and Urbina in Tier-C, which is identified as 'low ceiling.' Expect Julien and Urbina's ceilings are high. Considering Urbina played only in the DSL as a 17 year old prior to beginning this season in A-ball, expect his ceiling is very high.

Overall though, the tiers make a ton of sense. For sure. My thought process was essentially that Duran and Balazovic have ben recognized as Top 100 talents by MLB Pipeline, etc. but I'm not entirely convinced that the other three I have listed as significantly worse prospects. I also wanted to stay away from A-, B+, etc. tiers. I don't necessarily think that Canterino, Miranda, and Winder are Top 100, but they are likely Top 125-150 and at what point does the difference between, say, Top 75 and Top 125 become in the eye of the beholder?

My reasoning on Julien is that I want to see more of what he does at the Double-A level before bumping him up a tier. His walk rate has maintained, which is extremely encouraging and he's shown some pop as well. If he keeps up his current performance and sprinkles in a few more hits, he'll move up in short order. As far as Urbina goes, age is definitely an important factor, but he's largely been unimpressive at Low-A. Again, that can change wildly and if he eventually pops up into the B-tier I wouldn't be completely shocked. But the number of athletes who have struggled as much as he has and still make it to the majors and become quality players is low. Right now his trajectory seems similar to that of Javier, but again that can change.
