Harmon on Home Run Derby

Twins Daily had the link to a 1959 vintage Home Run Derby between Harmon Killebrew and Willie Mays. Harmon was in his Senators Uniform and I remember listening to that team on the 1955 Buick radio when we lived in Florida. The car radio was able to pick up WTOP in Washington at night but it wasn't perfect and I remember getting upset when it would fade during a key part of the game. That team is the reason I am now a Twins fan.

What "struck" me about the derby was the dimensions of the minor league park they held the derby in. 340 to right and left, 412 to center with about a 10' high wall. The other thing was how similar Killebrew's and May's batting stance was. Almost carbon copies. Too bad they didn't have forceplates in those days. Another refreshing thing to see was how low keyed and humble both players were and were genuinely happy to get the $2,000 for Mays, who won, and $1,000 for Harmon as opposed to today's $50K per at bat. But it was 61 years ago; ancient history

I watched HR Derby on YouTube months ago.  I saw Harmon vs. Rocky Colavito and I remember thinking how quiet and cordial they were.  I will be checking out some HR Derby, thanks

I guess school is out. Are you conducting remote learning classes? Go Twins!

(I still think the sign stealing fiasco was overblown ha)

My favorite thing about this was that the announcer would always point out that this park favors neither a right handed nor left handed batter or American or National League hitter.

I don't think the right field fence was as high as the wall going from left to center but I guess the distances were the same. I wonder how many home runs were hit by the teams that played there. The whole thing was so laid back and low key. Maybe it was edited but both Harmon and Willie swung at every pitch. Maybe a called strike by the ump was an out. Most peaceful competition you will ever see.
