What purpose does Perez serve being on the Twins?

He doesn't have options so they can't send him down. Twins have tried other guys like Smelzer, Stewart, etc and they haven't worked out. They didn't trade for a starter at the deadline. In short, Perez is there to eat innings much like a Hector Santiago is - except Perez plays on a team that needs him to be good. It's a really bad situation that's been festering since June. Front office is whistling in the dark.

Perez was great for about 6 weeks, and now he's back to the guy he was in Texas. He's a 5.00-6.00 ERA starter who will be passable every once in a while, but will implode and isn't worth a spot in the rotation. I never liked the signing, and this is what I envisioned happening... though I didn't see the positive value he'd bring as an ace for about a month.

 

I'm surprised they haven't tried him in the bullpen extensively, maybe see if he can get his MPH up a few ticks if he only pitches a single inning?
