Trey Cabbage - 2017

Cabbage was the Twins 4th round pick in 2015 and, after Jay and Blankenhorn, the third player who actually signed with the Twins.  Cabbage signed for above slot, basically 2/3 round money, and is a left-handed hitter with good athletic ability.  

 

Sadly, Cabbage simply struggled last year at Elizabeton.  He struck out in nearly 35% of his PA and walked in 10%.  His line was .204/.297/.337.  He was hurt for a bit.  It was a disaster season.  He's dropped on many lists, not making mlbpipeline's top 30 Twins.  Fangraphs didn't put him in their top 24 either but he did get an honorable mention - 

 

"A solid athlete with plenty of physical projection, Cabbage struggled defensively this year and scouts think he might end up moving to first base. It’s obviously going to be harder for the bat to profile there, but he has a chance for an average hit tool and game power."

 

So I think this will be a big year for him.  He's a switch hitter and sometimes that takes longer to figure out but I'm not sure how much longer he has if he doesn't show something.  He'll repeat at Elizabethton.

I suppose I should update this. 

 

Cabbage started the year in Elizabethton but was promoted to Cedar Rapids. In 13 games so far, he's struggled a bit - .209/.306/.349 - but that's a pretty small sample size.  Still, he's 20 and dropped off of mlbpipeline's top 30 Twins.

 

He's mostly been playing LF.  At the end of the day, he's struggling and I'm not sure how much rope the Twins will give him. I suspect they'll let him have another year, regardless of what happens, but it would be nice to see him put together some strong games.
