All stats from Baseball Reference:

Chris Herrmann, career: .212/.284/.343 (.623)

CH, v RHP:  .215/.281/.355 (.636)

CH, v LHP:  .196/.275/.293 (.568)

Jason Castro, career: .233/.309/.390 (.699)

JC, v RHP: .247/.328/.424 (.753)
JC, v LHP: .190/.249/.287 (.536)

Chris Herrmann, D WAR:  0.1 in 555 PA (.00018 D WAR per PA)

Jason Castro, D WAR: 4.4 in 2,266 PA (.00194 D WAR per PA)

So you know, sorry, but you appear to be misinformed. Now Herrmann did have an amazing year last year, in only 166 PAs, but to say the two are comparable on either offense or defense is severely misinformed. And heck, I'd be willing to give Herrmann another shot if we could some how sign him as a free agent, which we can't. But Castro has an undeniably better track record, and platooning against mostly RHP, he can be a real asset.

I would think the last three years would be a better indication of how someone will perform next year...... rather than 10 years ago.

I don't agree that EVERY decision has to be about 2018 or 19....they need to help the pitchers they have, even learning and working with a good, veteran, catcher could help young players. I don't agree that all 25 guys need to be about "are they here"....the young players need a veteran or three (that can actually play), imo.

Yes, I agree with this. Garver could learn a few things from himy as well. You can still be getting younger and younger, hopefully better in the long run, but still augment the roster for better all around performance with a quality veteran or two, even if they are role players. As I've suggested here and there such as 4th OF, SS or utility for now, etc.

If this were truly what players cared about no stuggling team would ever be able to sign a good free agent.  Money talks a lot.  $30M dollars (to play baseball) probably would get me to forget or not care that the team I signed with has averaged 68 wins a year the last 6 years.

From MLBTR:  "The Astros are known to want Castro back, while the Angels, White Sox, Orioles, Rays and Twins are among Houston’s AL rivals that could look to pick up some help behind the plate."

5 teams with more money and better winning percentages than the Twins [ Rays are in the ballpark ].

My bet is the Twins would have to overpay for Castro to get him.  New management, new structure, new attitudes:  Sure, it could actually happen.

Agree.  Need some players like Torii Hunter to help them along.  With Berrios' start and Duffey's fall, a sound defensive catcher would be of great help.

Seems like catchers are becoming somewhat rare commodity.  Twins should take a look.

I would be fine with Willians Astudillo as a backup to whomever.  I would think he could be signed to a minor league contract then be backup until Garver is ready to be the backup, or vice versa.

that was my thought.

(Try to) Sign Castro. He'd be a good platoon with whoever else is there.

As you can see he's a very decent hitter vs. righties, and would think Murphy or Garver could hit somewhat well for a catcher vs. lefties.
