Trey Cabbage

B/T: L/R

Pos: 3B

DOB: 5/3/97

2015 Draft: 4th Rd

Grainger HS, Rutledge, Tenn.

Trey was taken in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2015 draft signing for above slot at 750K (which was the slot value for the Twins 80th pick) while the fourth round slot was 517.9K.  Trey actually got a higher bonus than the Twins 3rd round draft pick HSer Travis Blankenhorn.

Out of high school the 6'3 190lb Trey was considered very athletic with a sweet swing.  His swing has the tendency to get long at times leaving him susceptible to strikeouts.  Scouts project him to hit for power the further he develops physically adding more muscle to his frame.  Having met his parents numerous times, if he gains muscle like his dad, he's going to slug.  Even with adding more weight, Trey is likely to stick at third base with good lateral movement to both sides and a strong accurate arm.

Upon signing, Trey reported to the Twins GCL Rookie ball where he hit .252/.302/.269/.571 in 119 AB while striking out 37 times with 7 walks and only 2 extrabase hits.  Currently, Trey is in extended spring training where he has been getting reps at SS recently as well as batting cleanup.  He's likely to report to E-town (Short season rookie ball) when it starts up in mid/late June.

Here are composite videos that I've taken of Trey over the summer:

Trey started off the season, ice cold but has heated up lately.  In his last 10 games, he's 11 for 34 with 6 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI 4 BB, 9 K raising his average from .175 to .254 in the span.  Cabbage is still striking out at too high of a clip, but at least the walk rate has improved.

For the season his line is .254/.338/.437/.774 in 71 at bats.

2016 Summary

111 ELZ plate appearances, .204/.297/.337 (.634), five doubles, one triple, two homers, eleven walks, 38 strikeouts, two steals, one time caught stealing.

Cabbage had an .883 fielding percentage at third base as well.

2017 Outlook

Cabbage turns 20 next May, so these stats in Rookie ball should not be too alarming. I expect Cabbage to move to Cedar Rapids and try to improve both offensively and defensively at third base.
