Hardball Times: Dereck Rodriguez's Conversion

Two years ago at this time, Dereck Rodriguez was in the Instructional League, making the transition from outfielder to pitcher.

This season, he was named the Pitcher of the Year in the Appalachian League.

The Hardball Times wrote an article on Rodriguez. Granted, his 2015 timeline/teams listing isn't exactly accurate, but it's a good article.

Still headscratching that he wasn't invited to instructs this year as a pitcher- still gotta be a lot for Dereck to learn about his new craft.

He's been stuck in rookie ball for how long?  His prospect status is pretty much non-existent at this point. I hope the kid figures it out and picks things up.

I mean, he did switch positions two years into his career, so the timeline isn't so bad.

That said, I believe he is eligible for the Rule 5 this year, not that he's a real candidate for it. So, 2016 in Cedar Rapids will be important to determine where he can go.

I'd agree with that.  His dad being an HOF certianly gives him some leeway.  Problem at this stage is his age.  He will be a minor league free agent next year, correct?  At that point, he's got to be added to the 40 man (though he'd be a 4 option year guy if I understand the rule right).

He strikes out a ton of guys but gives up a lot of hits too.  Not sure what to think about his stuff yet.  Obviously if he was voted best pitcher in the Appy league that says something.  He seems to have enough stuff to make it as a reliever IMO but protecting him is going to be hard as after this year the 40 man issues get really tough.  Next year is a big year for him as he will face tougher competition and he doesn't have time to fall back and repeat levels.

Seems like a super great guy.  I hope he makes it whether it is with the Twins or not.

I doubt the twins have to worry about him getting snatched yet. Stories like his are why minor league ball is so fun to follow. It will be pretty cool if he makes it. This isn't like sliding from short to third, it is a major change. I'm pulling for him.
