Ryan Nelson Eades

DOB: December 15, 1991 in Slidell, Louisiana, US
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 220
Position: SP
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Acquired: Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA). Previously selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 19th round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft from Northshore HS (Slidell, LA).

2014 - Cedar Rapids: 10-11 record, 5.14 ERA in 25 starts(26 appearances). 133 IP allowed 76 ER, while walking 50, and K-ing 98. Sporting a high WHIP, 1.481, H/9 of 9.9, 3.4 BB/9, but also an okay 6.6K/9. Having been bounced from the top prospects lists seems to be what Ryan needed to settle down and turn his season around over his final 9 game stretch:

  • 17 starts 5-10, 6.67ERA, 79.2IP, 59ER, 34BB, 71K, 7HR
  • 9 starts 5-1, 2.87ERA, 53.1IP, 17ER, 16BB, 27K, 4HR

Considerably better! He looks to have carried it into 2015 too!

I chose Eades because I followed his career at LSU long before the Twins drafted him as he was my high school coach's son. I was estactic to see that he was drafted by my Twins, and have continued to follow since draft day. His brother was drafted in 2014 by the Pirates, but it looks like he's decided to turn pro in something other than athletics as he didn't sign after his college career. Ned(my coach, his father), whom unfortunately passed away when I was still at NHS - prior to Ryan's time there, would have loved to see how well he's doing. Also, on TLC re-runs there's an episode of Say Yes To The Dress of Ryan's future wife, entitled Dueling Visions(Season 12, Episode 12). I'm a huge card nerd, so I'll be posting some of my favorites over the season such as this one:

2015 prediction: Bumped up to High-A Fort Myers, Ryan looks to leave behind his struggles last year and build on a success last half 2014/early 2015. Barring any setbacks, he could be due another bump to AA. So far this year, he's put up:

  • 2 starts, 1-0, 0.75ERA, 12IP, 11H, 1ER, 3BB, 6K, 1HR
  • 1.167WHIP, 8.2H/9, 2.2BB/9, 4.5K/9

Final prediction: 14-8, 4.25ERA, 104K.

Second start of the season: 6IP/6H/1R/1ER/1BB/3K/1HR/1HBP.

Ryan appeared to struggle with the flyball (15:5 - FB:GB ratio), allowed one less walk over the first start of the season, while giving up six hits(one dinger) in six innings. No decision.

Third start of the season: 7.1IP/9H/1

4R/3ER/1BB/4K/0HR.

Ryan's flyball to groundball ratio remains high(13:6), despite the seven and a third innings, his stat line shows it. Nine hits, 4 runs/3 earned. Did strikeout four, and got the W however. Weird start.

Fourth start of the season: 6IP/5H/2R/2ER/1BB/3K/1HR.

Despite the earned runs, this was probably Ryan's best start of the season so far. Ryan kept the ball out of play, tying his season low 5 hits. Despite the dinger, his flyball total was the lowest of the season - only 6FB with 6 groundballs. No decision.

Fifth start of the season: 5IP/2H/3R/5ER/5BB/4K/0HR.

Walks always burn ya! Ryan only allowed 2 hits in 5 innings pitched, but was tagged with 5 earned. He did tie a season high 4 strikeouts, but had more balls in play, 11GBs, 11FBs. No decision. Again.

2015 statistics:

Fort Myers:

103.1 IP, 3.40 ERA, 71 K, 30 BB (6.2/2.6), 1.239 WHIP

Admittedly, I was pretty low on Eades coming into this year. This is marked improvement though, even while moving up a level.

I do think that Eades should be kept at A+ for half the season in 2016 and then be promoted to AA if things are still improving.

To be honest I had expected Eades to be better than he has but he has been by no means bad...just not doing much to grab ones attention.
