Milone is terrible

For those saying the Milone demotion wasn't performance based:

Do you really think the A's go out and trade away maybe the best pure SS prospect in baseball if they think Milone was actually as good as his ERA suggested?

How are we supposed to criticize the Twins with that logic?

I was going to post the same question.

Don't blame Twins pitching philosophy on Milone's struggles.  He knows his pitches and so does Suzuki.

If he has changed his pitching pattern, there is a reason.  Probably we will find out in the off-season that he was hurt.

Hurt?  There was never anything reported about "hurt", pain, injury, etc.  The Twins could (would!) have complained openly if the A's had try to pass off an injured player, so any claim of injury to Milhone has no evidence.  Given the low price paid for Milhone, failure by Milhone doesn't stain Ryan's reputation.  It's just one of those things.

Sadly, all too often I read posts that a pitcher's problems are "hurt".

Nolasco's injury? I don't believe it was anything of the sort.  Given the guaranteed nature of his contract and the Twins aversion to paying large sums of money to a guy who doesn't play, they would have shut him down for the rest of the season if there was any danger to the rest of his career. Often, a guy is just "rested" to see if a little time off can "right the ship".  Placing Nolasco in the IR would open a spot on the Active Roster--and wouldn't cost a playoff spot!  It is common for players not to perform up to expectations  that were not caused by injury.  I don't know why this "hurt" is tossed around so frequently--though I have my suspictions.

Right on cue:

Per Mike Berardino "Tommy Milone is dealing with mild shoulder fatigue."  It's possible he could skip a start as the season winds down.

Tell this to Scott Baker.  He just wasn't tough enough until of course he needed TJ.

Nolasco was diagnosed with an elbow strain.  This is not career threatening nowadays.  If he's going to need TJ then it's better to find out this season instead of waiting until next spring.  That way the Twins potentially don't lose the next 2 seasons (and the last one).  He should be starting right now despite the injury this season.

Usually, when a player has a sharp drop off in production there is a physical reason.  Milone is a smart player and he is trying to "tough it out".  Nothing has been said publicly. Maybe he hasn't even confided in the Twins coaches.  Something is wrong and we will probably find out when the season is over.

It probably goes back to the long discussion we that was had before about toughing it out vs. saying you are injured.

Milone comes to a new organization and wants to make an impression. He has a shot at a job next year, and perhaps more importantly he is finally eligible for arbitration, which isn't a sure thing. If he comes over and says he is hurt, doesn't bode to  well for his future with the franchise.

I suspect after 3-4 starts the coaching staff asked him about it and he mentioned the dead arm and how skipping a start helped. Hopefully he can recover and pitch well down the stretch.

Today's Mike Berardino article in the Pioneer Press was very interesting.

http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_26469210/twins-pitcher-tommy-milone-will-skip-next-start

"He gets to the latter part of the season, right around 150 innings, and his throwing shoulder starts to wear down on him."

The Twins call it shoulder fatigue.

"That's what happened with the Oakland A's in 2012, when Milone skipped a start on Aug. 10 after going 0-3 with a 7.58 earned run average in his previous three starts. After that breather, Milone finish out a 31-start season by going 4-1 with a 3.26 ERA in his final nine starts."

You know how Bert always talks about having a "dead arm" period during the season?  This is another example.

Maybe not a bad idea once Milone comes back to switch the whole staff to a six man rotation for the rest of the year. They aren't competing for a playoff spot, the only guy on the staff that would even be pitching for accumulating statistical goals would be Hughes. Not enough games left for him to reach 20 wins or 200 Ks, so no need to make these guys grind it out.

Give Darnell some starts to finish the month/season, see how he fares. He's probably going to be the first guy up from AAA next year, too.

Agreed, I don't know who to blame really. Milone, Anderson, or the fact that his shirt says "Minnesota" now.

Anderson. Definitely Anderson.

Yes.

It's time for a change in the front office down to scouting.  Just look at all the former Twins in the majors having successful careers other places, example, Carlos Gomez, Denard Span, Ben Revere, and Justin Morneau...

We definitely have to blame Anderson because a guy like Milone turned into a pumpkin within a month of being acquired.  ;)

I blame marginal stuff.  If it's off just a little then it turns into a disaster.
