Why would they have to carry more RP'ers? With more rest pitchers could stay in the game longer and reduce the need for so many RP'ers. The big problem with this is that it requires less brilliant managing. Modern baseball managers are geniuses for using 5 RP'ers for 3 innings of work.

if there was a rule that stated a team could carry only 10 pitchers, maybe 11

there would be so much less time wasted by pitching changes and warm up time

 

one of the biggest gripes people have against the game is the length of a 9 inning game

 

i would rather see a batter hit than the third or fourth pitcher of an inning take his seven warm up throws

Bert probably would have had TJ surgery in 1982 had the procedure been as common place as it is today.

 

Still I agree that the extra starter probably comes at the expense of a bench player and not a bullpen arm as adding a sixth pitcher most likely means adding one more below average starter and not an ace. Below average arms generally are the ones who require an early entrance for the bullpen.

do you have any correlation that a six rotation usually pitching on 6 days rest would abuse pitchers? Darvish and Lewis are claiming that the extra rest was very beneficial even though they throw more pitches/start in Japan. There should be absolutely no reason that they would need to add another long man since overall bullpen innings would be reduced.

 

The one big problem is that there just aren't enough MLB caliber starters available and one of the not talked reasons for the steroid era was that expansion in the 90's diluted the pitching ranks. I cringe at the thought of the Twins needing to find 6 worthwhile starters since they can't even find 5 (or 4, 3, 2, 1?) most years.

This concept would take as much conditioning for the managers as it would the pitchers. The seventh inning comes along and most managers are just looking for a reason to match-up, pitch count and numbers be-damned.
