Alex Meyer

You know, things have changed a lot in all sports, not just baseball, in regard to young talent. Not saying there is a new formula to implement, with apologies to all the stat heads out there. Lol

In the NFL, it used to be a QB was drafted, sat on the bench to learn 2-3 years, then got his shot. Now, even with lower salary numbers the past few years, everyone still expects a QB to start his rookie year. And yet, a successful few sku the rest as most wash out.

Ever since the NBA allowed HS kids to drafted, very few ever amounted to anything. For every Kobe and Durant and James, most kids floundered, or only made it after several years and a change or two in teams.

In baseball, Blyleven, just as an example, jumped very young to the majors when I was very little. But I do remember Gooden, Griffey and Rodriguez defying all odds and reaching the majors at 19 & 20. But like in most sports, I think we often confuse talent, potential, team need and want with reality. So few ever truly make an impact amongst so many, and we become enamored with the ones who reach the pinnacle so quickly, that we lose perspective and begin to believe every talented player should follow similar paths and results.

Its just not natural or realistic. Even top talents develop at their own pace. Pitchers, generally, mature slower than position players as there are simply so many subtleties and nuances that bespeak success. May and Meyer are in no way "old" prospects. Both are having success in their first seasons at AAA that should have every Twins fan giddy with excitement. Remember, we are talking about young prospects building their arrival to successful ML careers, helping our team win, hopefully for many years. But it is impossible to draft a future hall of fame player. If someone could, they would be the highest paid executive in all of baseball.

May should be up soon. But don't be surprised if he gets a couple starts back at AAA just to get back in rhythm after his calf injury. The Twins want to be careful with Meyer because they think so highly of him. I think he's on a similar path as Gibson, with the days and dates of arrival offset simply due to circumstance. I'd still be surprised, simply because he has to be added to the 40 man roster anyway, if he doesn't get at least a few ML innings out of the pen this season. I think it would really accelerate his maturation process.

Actually, yes, May and Meyer are "old" prospects. "Old" is a relative term, and relative to when other top prospects tend to debut, they absolutely are getting on the "old" side.

Debating whether it is good or bad to allow your top prospects to become "old" (again, relative to their peers) is a great debate, but it doesn't change the fact that they are getting quite old for such high prospects, particularly Meyer, as he is a much more highly regarded spec.

Meyer might get a look if Nolasco is down past the trade deadline, I am thinking well into august, especially once, not if Correia is traded. But at most it'll be 4-5 starts, I would imgine Deduno, or some combination of him, Pino, Johnson, and maybe even Darnell will get another look before Meyer, Mostly to manage Meyer's innings. If Meyer gets his consistantcy back to where it had been before June, which seems to be the case, he'll get a september call up at the very least.
