2020 Catching Tandem Discussion

Twins Video

Fellow Twins Daily contributor Cooper Carlson and I discussed a decision facing the Twins this offseason that I feel has flown a bit under the radar. Among the topics we covered were whether retaining Jason Castro is a priority, Willians Astudillo as the backup and which free agent catchers caught our interest.

My main concern with going into next season with Astudillo as the back up is who do the Twins have as depth if Garver gets injured.  He was remarkably healthy this past season, but he does have a history of concussions.  I almost think the Twins would want to go into next season with Garver, another catcher and Astudillo.

Additionally, with rosters expending to 26 next season I feel it's easier to carry 3 catchers.

Unless Castro really wants to be the man somewhere, I'd sign him. He's been here, is a good player and we need him.

We have enough catchers in the minors to cover any needs for a third catcher - Jeffers, Rortvedt, Tellis, and Sawyer - to cover any injury time or use issues for Astudillo and Garver

I just fear that Astudillo is way better on camera - you know, high-fiving kids and marshmallowing into walls or onto the dirt - than he is in the actual production department.  He is versatile and beloved.

Castro should definitely be an option, but I hope the Twins look at others (particularly left-handed hitting options).

Astudillo seems the perfect 26th man, if the new 15 day rule on optional assignments allows the team to keep him there.
