TwinsDaily Minor League Report (7/7): Moving Day and 2 Palka Dingers

Thursday was a busy day in Minor League Baseball as the Twins shuffled their affiliate rosters around, moving more than a dozen players around.   Transaction Report: Daniel Palka has been promoted to Rochester, David Martinez has been released, Edgar Corcino, Tyler Jay, and Felix Jorge have all been promoted to Chattanooga. Omar Bencomo has been placed on the Disabled List. Sam Clay, Miles Nordgren, and Daniel Kihle have been promoted to Fort Myers. Max Cordy, Andrew Vasquez, Casey Scoggins, and

Solidifying The Twins Up The Middle

Over the past month, two Minnesota Twins hitters have been absolutely unconscious in relation to their teammates. Both Kurt Suzuki and Brian Dozier have been so red hot at the plate, they've completely turned around the storylines of their early seasons. While Suzuki is in the last year of his deal with Minnesota, and is likely on his way out, Dozier is not and finds himself in a different situation.   Coming into the season, there was some significant worry about what Brian Dozier's career may

Blame Game "Who is at fault" in the Rotation

There has been a lot of talk on here calling for Terry Ryan to get fired. I disagree with that assesment and instead of arguing i figured to make the scenarios into a game of who is at fault? Terry Ryan, The player, or something else....Also I will make this a series starting with the rotation today then the bullpen, IF and C, then OF and prospects.   In 2013 Terry Ryan signed Phil Hughes to a 3 year 24 million contract. in 2014 he posted strong numbers and basically justified the whole contract

Terry Ryan Is Bad, and Worse Than You'd Think

There's not much hiding from the fact that the 2016 Minnesota Twins aren't good. Currently just 24-51 through their first 75 games, Paul Molitor and Terry Ryan have put a stinker on the field night after night. While there's plenty of blame to be handed to the players under-performing, there's a true scapegoat in all of this.   At the end of the day, the criticism for Terry Ryan hasn't been loud enough.   Sure, it's maybe not fair to pile on a 62 year old that's in well over his head. That being

"I've Got A Problem Here..."

Red Squadron was the legendary flight of X-Wing pilots who fought in the Battle of Yavin. Red Squadron featured the likes of Wedge Antilles, Luke Skywalker, and Jek Porkins. While two of those three went on to have exceptional careers with the Rebellion, mostly because the rest of them were blown up, one memorable member crashed and burned on the surface of the Death Star.   "I've got a problem here." - Jek "Eject." – Biggs Darklighter (#RIP) "I can hold it." - Jek "Pull up!" - Biggs "No, I'm al

In Trading Santana, Twins Can Start Over

As the Minnesota Twins continue their run through the 2016 Major League Baseball season, it's more than apparent to label them as sellers when the July 31st trade deadline rolls around. Terry Ryan and Paul Molitor will have to decide who sticks going forward, but no one not named Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton should be considered off limits on the 25 man roster. It sounds like the piece that may draw the most interest could be starting pitcher Ervin Santana.   Recently, the Boston Globe's Nick Ca

Twins Need To Get Young Sooner, Not Later

The Minnesota Twins have now played 75 games in 2016, and they've won just 24 of them. Paul Molitor's club has the worst record in the major leagues, and Minnesota was the first team to reach the 50 loss plateau. After a season in which the Twins nearly made the playoffs, they're all but cooked by the end of June. It's time the organization makes a shift in its thought process.   Now in his second time around as general manager, Terry Ryan has made mediocrity a defining term in looking at his te

Twins Minor League Report (6/26): Appalachian League Slugfest

Five of the Twins affiliates were in action on Sunday, as the post-draft minor league seasons get into full swing with the Rookie Leagues added to the slate.   One of those Rookie League teams continued their early season roll with a slugfest against their arch rival. Trevor May joined Miguel Sano at AAA in a rehab assignment with Rochester. Chattanooga got eight strong innings from their starting pitcher and another home run from a guy who keeps being showcased in these reports. Cedar Rapids us

Top five unbreakable baseball records (since 1930)

I have always been enamored with the history of sports, so I thought I would do a top five unbreakable records in Major League baseball. I cut it off at since 1930, so I have not included the Cy Young’s 511 wins, Charles Radbourn’s 59 wins in a season in 1884 or Will White’s 75 complete games in 1879 since those records are impossible to break. There are many records that most likely won’t ever be broken, but I narrowed it down to just five and here they are:   5. Nolan Ryan’s 2,795 walks   This

My Visit to Yankee Stadium

Well I saw the new Yankee Stadium last night. It was determined before we got to New York, that we would see Lions vs. Christians er Yankees vs. Twins on Friday night. My son, serving as tour guide/babysitter had us heading for the Bronx by 5 PM. After spending all afternoon in a museum, I was ready to go. We got to a subway station and headed towards the stadium. An uneventful 20 minute ride later and we were there. But wait! We hadn't eaten and the majority of our party didn't want ballpark fo

TwinsDaily Minor League Update (6/23): Berrios Strikes Out Nine!

With nearly a full compliment of Twins Minor League affiliates in action (GCL Twins start their season on Friday), there was a lot happening down on the Farm. Including the first game of the year for the Elizabethton Twins (E-Twins).   Lots happening today in the Transaction Report as teams finalize their second half rosters and the Gulf Coast League and Appalachian League kick off play: Niko Goodrum assigned to Fort Myers from Chattanooga, LaMonte Wade (Fort Myers) placed on DL, Tom Hackimer as

What's With This Plating Thing?

We used to say clever things in baseball, using words that conveyed a sense of excitement; a sense of action. A batter delivered a crucial hit and you’d hear/read things like “Kepler drives in a run!” Or “Escobar scores on a key hit up the middle!”   “Drives” and “scores” are commonly used and easily understandable verbs that connote action and excitement. That’s a good thing.   But now if you read game wrap-ups on the Twins official site, our guys don’t do exciting things anymore (Which is true

Twins Having A Power Outage?

There was a time prior to the 2016 Major League Baseball season that it was wondered whether or not the Twins may set some records. Those records were along the lines of a power surge that an exciting and intriguing lineup seemed to set itself up for. Fast forward to now, and the Twins have been anywhere but at the top of the home run charts, and the only record they're looking to set is in the loss column.   The question is, just where do they sit as far as home runs are concerned?   Well, the

MWL All-Star Game Photos

Since it was so late when I got home after last night's Midwest League All-Star Game, I was too tired to get all of the photos included in my ASG post that I would have liked to. (Sure, the margarita or 5 that I had at the game MIGHT have had something to do with my drowsiness, but there's no hard evidence of that, so I'm going with 'I was just tired.')   Anyway, I decided to post several more pictures from the ASG festivities over the past couple of days in Cedar Rapids.   Now, here's the thing

Midwest League All-Star Game Events

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and the city of Cedar Rapids hosted this year's Midwest League All-Star Game festivities and all four Kernels players on the Western Division roster played big roles before the festivities concluded.   The Eastern Division stars notched a come-from-behind 11-10 victory in what could only be described as an entertaining ballgame.   Kernels pitcher Sam Clay got the start for the West stars and notched a 1-2-3 inning in the first inning, completing it with a strikeout.   Ce

Twins Begin Weighing Possibilities With Plouffe

Coming into the 2016 Major League Baseball season, there was plenty of reason to believe that the Minnesota Twins should have moved Trevor Plouffe. Playing third base while pushing teammate Miguel Sano to the outfield, it was over the offseason that Plouffe's value was likely at its peak. Fast forward to where we are now however, and the narrative couldn't be any more different.   Starting with Sano, I had plenty of belief that he could be a capable right fielder. To say he has been far off from

Where Did Minnesota Get Off Chicago's Road?

As things stand for the 2016 Minnesota Twins, Paul Molitor's club is a Major League Baseball worst 21-48. Things are bad, that's pretty obvious, but the question is where things went wrong. I'm not here to tell you that I have all of the answers, but I'm pretty firm in the belief that Terry Ryan and his cronies certainly do not either.   Let's set the stage here; the parallels came full circle once again on Sunday night as I watched Cubs rookie catcher Willson Contreras launch a home run. Alex Kirilloff Ready To Shine For Twins

For the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, the Minnesota Twins were coming off of a winning season that awarded them just the 15th overall pick. Not selecting in the top 10 for the first time in a while, Minnesota had a few options that would be presented to them. When the dust settled, they ended up going with the power hitting outfielder Alex Kirilloff. The Pennsylvania native has plenty of intrigue, and he's ready to unleash it for the Twins.   Kirilloff's prep career came to an end one win sh

Twins Minor League Report (6/19): Rochester's Big Inning Backs Greenwood

Happy Father’s Day across Twins territory, including Rochester, NY; Chattanooga, TN; Fort Myers, FL; and Cedar Rapids, IA! If you were out at a ballpark today, I hope you stayed hydrated! There were three games in the minor leagues on Sunday afternoon, with those teams looking to bring home a victory just like their parent club did against the Yankees.   One team got most of their offense in just one inning, while the other two teams scored first and tried to hold on. Did any of them do enough t

Anatomy of a Big Inning (or two)

Yesterday, Ricky Nolasco and the Twins were cruising to a victory against the weakened, but still hated, New York Yankees. A funny thing happened on the way to the winner's circle--the Twins gave up seven runs in innings 7, 8, and 9 and were beaten despite getting two homers against Chapman in the ninth.   Here are some of the culprits: Kevin Jepsen entered in the eighth with a two-run lead and one runner on first and one out. He yielded the game-tying homer to Carlos Beltran, which gave the Yan

Develop A Catcher

The Minnesota Twins have the worst team ERA in the American League and their starters combined ERA, 5.59, is over a full run higher than the league average.   As I have said before, there is no real help in sight.   The same can be said for the catching situation.   Past Kurt Suzuki, in his third year as a Twin, the orginization has nothing promising. The best catcher in the minors is A.J. Murray. Murray, the Class-A Cedar Rapids' main catcher, leads the team in home runs, doubles and RBIs. He

The Oswaldo Arcia Era Ends For Twins

Following their 46th loss of the season, Paul Molitor informed reported that the Minnesota Twins would be welcoming Danny Santana back after a rehab assignment. That move was also met with the announcement that Minnesota would designate Oswaldo Arcia for assignment, his time with the Twins has come to an end. It might be a mercy rule for both sides however, as both parties deserved better.   For the Twins, Arcia was signed as an amateur free agent back in 2007. He landed on prospect lists prior
