25 Minnesota Twins Drafts in 25 Days: 1997

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Hi, Twins Daily! In the last few days, I have posted a few more draft recaps at my blog. If you missed them, and want to read about them, you can find them here: 1994, 1995, 1996.   Here is 1997: Travis Lee was being a real jag and didn't want to sign with the Twins after the 1996 draft. The Twins did not want to duplicate that jaggery in 1997. They had a strict "no-jag" policy in '97, opting instead for super nice guys. In the end, the Twi

Also posted in wgom.org   Kent Hrbek (1960)   First baseman Kent Allen Hrbek played his entire 14-year major league career, 1981-1994, with the Twins. He was born in Minneapolis, raised in Bloomington, and drafted by Minnesota in the 17th round in 1978. He hit only .203 in 59 at-bats in Elizabethton that year, but improved to .267 with 19 homers in Wisconsin Rapids in 1980. In 1981, he hit .379 with 27 homers at Class A Visalia, and that was as much as the Twins need to see. He came to Minne

Who is Caleb Thielbar?

It has been quite the wild ride for Mr. Caleb J. Thielbar on his way to the major leagues.   The 26-year old left-hander was called-up by the Minnesota Twins on Monday after the team demoted fifth starter Pedro Hernandez. Thielbar is not a starter so the team will need to make another roster move before Friday's game to fill out the rotation. Options for this spot include Kyle Gibson, Sam Deduno, and PJ Walters.   Thielbar was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2009 MLB D

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Weekend Recap   Welp. The Twins weren't really supposed to be good or even decent this season, so a 2-7 homestand isn't crazy. It's more disappointing, after what seemed like a such a positive start. Regardless, this franchise is clearly trending upward, even if this past week doesn't reflect that.   The thing that struck me the most from the weekend was another shaky Scott Diamond start. I did a detailed breakdown of Diamond's 2012 and conclu

Kyle Gibson and the Red Wings at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs today and it was so close

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---   A couple days ago I realized that the Rochester Red Wings were playing the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at my back yard. Literally, their ballpark (Coca Cola Park) is less than half an hour away from my door, so I make a point to go and see the Red Wings every year when they play there. This was their second game here, and by choice I went today instead of yesterday, because Kyle Gibson was pitching. There were a lot of conflicting reports

Adopt a Prospect Volume 2.2: De-Restraining the Force Inside

It's a frickin' monsoon out there little rainy today, and rather than stare hopefully at the FSN rain delay, hoping that the game restarts and the Twins suddenly remember the good ol' days of two weeks ago when they could crush the Red Sox as easily as a twig under a space ship, we decided to revisit our old pal Luis Perdomo! Then we saw the statistics and remembered that Luis needs a motivation coach. So it's high time for lesson number two: (This instruction was intended for Luis Perdomo only.

With the 4th pick of the 2013 MLB Draft the Twins select...

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch -----   I feel that an introductory paragraph is in order here. This is the fourth season I have been covering the Minnesota Twins' drafts (started about 2 years into the existence of this blog). Since day one (you can see the humble 2009 beginnings here) I have been presenting potential target players' names and profiles and have been live-blogging each pick as they were happening providing mini-profiles. This will happen this season as

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   This is the third an last installment in this series. Today I am presenting the names of 101 High School players who are likely to get drafted (52 position players and 49 pitchers.)   The one thing that we learned from the 2012 MLB draft,

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Ford was drafted by Oakland in the first round in 1970. He spent his first two seasons at Class A Burlington, hitting .354 with 18 homers the second year. That got him promoted to AAA Tucson, where he also spent two seasons. Ford hit around .280 with double digit home runs in each season, but the Athletics were apparently not impressed a

Twins Mid-Term Report Cards

The conclusion of the Twins-Red Sox series marks the 1/4 point of the 2013 MLB season. Minnesota has truly had a strange and unexpected season thus far, but, as we all know, small sample sizes can have that effect! Should we be more surprised at how well the Twins have performed as a team? Or at whom has performed? Some of the success stories from last year have faded and at the same time unproven players are exceeding expectations. Let's see how our roster fares!   Catcher: Joe Mauer Significan
