Get to Know: Twins LHP prospect Zarion Sharpe
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like Doc, I was in the camp that Stankiewicz was their top signing. After reading this, gotta put Sharpe into that top spot. Sounds like a sharp young man and one hell of a prospect. Looks like Sharpe was close to being a top 5 round pick. Although the Twins don't have a lot of FA signings, looks like they got a couple really good ones. Considering how much money is thrown at some of the high draft picks, to bad someone like this young man couldn't have gotten more than $20k...assuming he got that. Hopefully, eight or ten years from now he cashes in with a big contract from the Twins. Add me to the list of those who really appreciate this piece, Seth.- 10 replies

The good news is that baseball should have an easier time dealing with the virus than sports that have a lot of contact. Other than around home plate, a runner held on at first and plays at a base, there really isn't much contact. Thought I would see the rule from tee ball limiting leading off, but that never found its way into any discussion. As to the future, everyone's guess is as good as the experts. When will the grievance be filed, if one is? Will the players show up for the playoffs when the owner's make more tv money? What happens when some team has half a dozen positive tests? If college football and the NFL have fans in the stands, why can't baseball also have 10,000+ fans beginning sometime in late August? Hell, that's the normal attendance at a Tampa Bay game...just spread them out a bit. With only 60 games and no expanded playoffs, no team is a clear favorite. Will the Twins pitching depth get them into the playoffs? Will Miguel Sano be able to get out of the D.R. to be part of this team? If he isn't, who is at first...Kirilloff? And what about Romero, did he ever get his VISA? Lots of questions remain, will we like the answers?

Wasn't overly excited on draft day as I knew nothing about any of the four picks. The more I read since that day, however, has me liking what the Twins did. Like others above, am most excited about this kid. Can Raya be another Berrios? Or even better? In time we will find out, but I like what he is saying.
-
Saw in this morning's Strib that Soularie signed for $900,000, or $285,500 UNDER slot. Raya signed for a bit over $30k UNDER slot. So they should have all the cash they need to get Sabato and Rosario signed in the next few days. Bloody shame this draft didn't go at least 12 rounds as they would have the cash to make a couple sweet moves later on.

Will leave all the decisions to the guys that make the big bucks to make them. One interesting point, however, is that you didn't include Thorpe with the list of potential starters. Believe this layoff will have given him the time to reset and look for him to be in competition with Bailey, Smeltzer, Dobnak and Chacin for that 5th and or 6th spots. Doubt they will go with a six man rotation, rather will pair starters throwing 4 or 5 innings with several of these guys that don't make the top five.

Baseball is Better Than This, Right?
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That could be true, but I am not certain what cut the agent gets of the tiny minor league contracts versus what his percentage is on the big first round signing bonuses. Plus, gotta believe the number of agents representing the 30 first round picks is small...probably 4 or 5 agent/firms. I expect the large number of players who aren't top prospects are represented by hundreds of other agents with less influence.- 36 replies

That's interesting, Major League Ready. Have been saying for a long time that if they cut the first round bonuses by say 40%, they could double all the salaries in the minor leagues. There probably is a reason the MLBPA would be opposed to it, just don't know why...or maybe I do, ie, the agent's fees would be 40% smaller on those kids. Maybe its time the MLBPA stops catering to the Boros of the world.- 36 replies

I have seen several comments above about Manfred and cutting minor league teams. I am in total agreement that there will be real pain in a lot of places like Elizabethton. Gotta feel for all those folks who's summer will be trashed. But looking at the big picture of MLB, it probably makes a ton of sense what they are doing as teams really don't need the better part 200 minor league players, not including the DSL, to find 2 or 3 rookies every year. These cuts will bring that down by 30 for most teams, other than the Yankees who will need to lose two teams. After having lived with this for several months, my biggest problem isn't that they are making the cuts. And the minimal salary increases previously reported may be offset by the savings of the reduced numbers. But they still haven't gotten minor league salaries to even a minimal acceptable level for these kids. That's the biggest problem I see, not that Manfred seems to be blind to what is going on around him.- 36 replies

I expect like many of you, I check this post four or five times a day hoping to see that the Twins have signed another player or two. So far have been met with a lot of disappointment. Even went to other team sites a couple days ago to see who they were signing. Although I know absolutely zip about any of the players signed by those teams who have been reporting the bigger number of signings, I didn't see any players that I said 'ah shucks,' wish we would have gotten him. To be honest, the numbers reported for Stankiewicz are a lot more interesting than anything I saw on the other sites...although I only checked the Cubs and one other team. Hopefully, we will see a few more guys added to the Twins roster over the coming days.

Minnesota Twins Post-Draft Top-20 Prospects: 11-15
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Really like Canterino and believe he has a very bright future...assuming anyone ever plays the game again. Between the injuries and lack of performance when playing, would want to see Javier do more on the field before including him anywhere near a top 20. -
There's No Baseball, But the Twins Are Winning
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Question, Nick. When I read about the $25mm donation, I got the impression all of it would be spent in the local Minnesota community. Is that correct? Also got the impression a lot would go towards housing, do you concur? -
Here you and agree. Have been wondering if MLB and the MLBPA can't come to agreement, soon, and trash this season, will teams get a couple minor league teams on the field to give us some baseball? Maybe have two teams, one AA/AAA and the other A players, playing out of the Florida complex? Get FSN to televise games for a nickel on the dollar of what they would pay for the Twins? As you can tell, I really want to watch baseball, any baseball.
-
I am beginning to see that there may be two sides to every story. We all thought the Twins would have an advantage being able to tell guys, hey, we haven't cut anyone and we are paying all our minor leaguers thru August. On the flip side, Boston COULD be telling them, hey, we cut a bunch of guys to open spots for players like you (I don't know how many, if any, Boston cut). They could then point out the Twins, and others, haven't meaning they really don't have an open spot for you to have a real chance. And we all know that in the world of recruiting, anything goes. I recall an assistant hockey coach a long time ago who was way north in some small Alberta town recruiting a really good goalie. Remember being told the clincher was he promised the kid he would start 50 games the next year. Only problem is his team only played 32. The kid believed him and if memory serves, was an all-american a few years later.

Looking at the little information given on him, hard to believe he wasn't drafted. But I guess that's what happens with a 5 round draft. Sure seems to be someone we would have been happy with had the Twins taken him in the eighth or ninth round? But I know less than nothing about baseball in the Atlantic 10 conference. Looked them up and see they are a 14 school conference with 13 playing baseball. Looks like most are smaller schools known for basketball...Dayton, Rhode Island, VCU, Saint Louis. Doesn't mean there isn't a future Cy Young pitcher playing at one of them...could we be so fortunate to have found him? Am a little disappointed the Twins have signed only one. Does anyone know how many other teams have on the dotted line? Guess this isn't like NFL teams signing undrafted guys the night the draft ends, eh?
-
Would have liked to see him remain a Twin for life also. Remember writing about him back when he was in the lower levels of the minors, back when he wasn't getting a lot of respect. From another article I read last week, sounds like he has a nice life and family. Happy for him!

What's Next for the Twins and Undrafted Players?
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for staying on top of this, Seth. Will be exciting to see who the Twins get signed. Considering they normally signed 25-30 draft picks, my expectation is that they will want at least half that number this year. So 8 free agents plus their four draft picks would get them an even dozen. One thing we can be sure of is that when this is done next week they will be over joyed with the players they were able to sign. Then the next question will be when do we see them actually getting together on the field? -
Minnesota Twins 2020 MLB Draft Recap
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Couldn't remember who we took in 2015, so went back and checked. You really didn't have to remind me that was the year we took Tyler Jay in the first round and Kyle Cody with the CBB pick. You are right, that sure didn't work. See that Cody was picked #189 the next year, so not signing and going back didn't work out to well for him either. Seemed to pitch ok in the lower levels of the minors, but didn't pitch at all in 2019...assume he was injured. A bigger question was if it was so strong with pitchers, why did we take Tyler Jay? But your example points out how big of a crap shoot it is. Supports my contention that the bonuses paid to the first couple rounds should be cut substantially with those saved dollars going to double the pay to all of the minor league players. Maybe if I say that often enough someone will see it and do something.- 33 replies

Minnesota Twins 2020 MLB Draft Recap
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess I am looking at the draft as so-so because it had been reported to be strong with college arms, and the Twins got none. Was hoping that they would have found the next Kluber or someone like that. But considering that most drafts yield two or three guys that even make it to the big leagues, it only takes one to become a solid starter and it is a good draft. You will all know in five years or longer for the two young kids.- 33 replies

But wouldn't the best of all bluffs be confirmed by those allegedly involved? Or the best of all bluffs might not be known to anyone other than the two key principals. Not saying it was, but have always had a feeling.

Thanks for a good smile this morning. I am one of those however, who believe it is possible that the entire contraction scenario was one of the better all time bluffs.

When the draft began I was somewhat blah after the Twins first pick. Know nothing about him, but I was hoping for a chance at getting the next Chris Sale. Kept checking ESPN yesterday and eventually saw three names that meant absolute nothing to me. After reading the three posts here, kind of like what the Twins got. But they still didn't get the next Chris Sale. Assume they will save a few dollars signing the first two to give a bit extra to the two young kids. Hopefully, they will add 8 to 10 interesting signings to fill out this group. Does Seth or anyone know what their plans are for this group, other than taking a physical, signing a contract and depositing a check? With no minor league seasons, will this group have an instructional camp in Ft. Myers sometime later this summer? With such a small group, will they include some of the younger kids from last year's GCL and DSL?

Twins Select Aaron Sabato with the 27th Overall Pick
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not real excited about the pick who is so-so at first with no other position other than DH. Similar feel for me to when the Twins took Jeffers a couple years ago, and that appears to be working out well. Hopefully Sabato is another find that I can get excited about in a few years, but I really was hoping for the next Chris Sale. Does anyone see the Twins signing him for several hundred thousand under slot so they can go over in round 4 or 5?- 51 replies
