idk, between Grossman and DH days for Mauer and Sano, I don't think it's a priority. I would also expect Mitch Garver to be in that mix. Obviously, keeping Grossman is not certain. We'll see how the second half plays out.
Now that I think some more. With Mejia pitching, there figure to be more balls hit to LF. So Grossman in RF makes sense. Note to mods: is there some reason why it wouldn't let me post an edit to the original post? Is that just a game thread thing?
Ironic that the slowest team in MLB is the only one that still plays home games on turf. Usually you would want and need speed for your defenders on turf.
I get that the Monster is tricky to play, but it seems that given that it is such a small field to play compared to RF that Grossman should be in left.
So, Hector Santiago is expected to be limited to 75-80 pitches. That's probably 4, MAYBE 5 innings for him. So, figure another 4-5 innings from the pen today. Not going to leave much available for Wednesday and Adalberto Mejia's start.
Breslow has also walked 4 lefties and only struck out 4 in almost 40 PA. Breslow has better BB and K rates vs RHP. He has an impossibly low .166 BABIP vs LHB as well. Boil it all down and it suggests that Breslow's success against lefties this year is largely a result of luck and/or because he's pitching in low leverage situations. As for Belisle, did you not see his horrendous performance in a high leverage situation last night? He allowed an inherited run to score and he turned a bad situation into an impossible one.
There is something of a mental capacity needed to be The Guy in the 9th. The finality of the situation I suppose. LaTroy Hawkins had substantially better stuff than Eddie Guardado. Hawkins flopped in the closer role but flourished in the 8th inning. Not everyone has it. Some guys develop it. Some don't.
Boshers threw 4 pitches and got two outs. I'm not sure he realistically could have done much better than that. He actually has a higher K rate vs RHP this year.
I am somewhat surprised his agent didn't file a greivance on the matter. Maybe Chargois didn't disclose pain until after being optioned, but the Twins knew (at the latest) on day 1 of the season that Chargois was hurt. Don't the Twins have coaches that are supposed to recognize signs of injury? Did anyone ask?
Which would require the Twins to rescind his option from March and retroactively award him service time and pay. If the Twins were willing to do that they would have done so already as it is pretty clear now that Chargois should have been put on the DL in March.
As far as I know, they can't "legally" DFA Chargois as long as he is injured. Not sure if the Twins can "return" Haley to Boston while he is on the DL.
