  1. Please. Don’t talk about the financial hardship of Byron Buxton. He received a six million dollar signing bonus. Even if he never makes another dime, he should be set for life.
  2. Did we trade Robbie Grossman to Texas? That looked like him in left field on that double by Mauer.
  3. I wasn’t one of them. I’ve always been wary of Tampa hitters. Something seems to inflate their numbers. The actual numbers over the years say it’s a pretty neutral park or even a pitcher’s park, but extremely anecdotal evidence suggests to me, at least, that players leave there and fall off the cliff. I suppose it could be playing tons of games at Yankee Stadium, Fenway and Camden Yards.
  4. As has been noted, they have two guys out for the year that aren’t on the 60 day DL. And then there’s Belisle.
  5. Unless some team has a ridiculous number of extra innings, I think one would logically find that teams rank in total plate appearances is consistent with their team obp. In other words, team with best obp probably has most PA.
  6. I am well aware of Odorizzi’s issues. What you seem to be unwilling to accept is that perhaps Molitor was trying to build on his success of the previous start. He didn’t. That’s on him. Not Molitor. I’m no fan of Molitor but I’ll be damned if I am going to criticize him for trying to develop a player into more than he has been.
  7. Except that in his last start he didn’t. He retired all 7 A’s he faced third time around. Rather easily. In a lost season, was it really so ridiculous to see if maybe, just maybe, he is improving in that area? Especially when said player is under team control for the next season and as such needs to be evaluated to determine what his role will be.
  8. I think the general consensus would be that said 36 year old player has had one season with an OPS above .752 in the last 5.
  9. Nothing prevents the Twins from starting Buxton in AAA to start the 2019 season for say 3 weeks.
  10. September. No reason not to have a third catcher. Even if he never plays. Just in case.
  11. At this point there is little to lose from seeing if Odorizzi can get through a lineup a third time. He did it once this year, in the start just prior to todays. But those issues should definitely be part of the equation regarding how he figures into plans for 2019.
  12. The Dodgers and Cubs only have 8 hitters in their lineups. They have a pitcher getting 400 or so at bats every year. That changes the dynamics as well.
  13. Why would the Cubs trade for an injured catcher? And I assume Austudillo goes back down or the Twins don’t officially activate Gimenez until the 1st.
  14. No one is saying there isn’t room for Kepler to improve. But you called for a Sano and Buxton like “reset” and given the fact that Kepler’s production is ABOVE league average, it simply isn’t warranted. That he isn’t meeting your arbitrary expectations is your problem.
  15. Just a hunch that each player has upwards of 10 jerseys, if not more.
  16. See now I’m in the exact opposite corner. Show me results on the field and a guy could weigh 500 pounds for all I care. Of course, a guy in good physical condition is more likely to do well.
  17. Enter the Cleveland bullpen. We’re comin’!!!
  18. Any word on Rosario from any broadcast? Any injury that takes him out more than a day or two most likely puts Buxton on the MLB roster.
  19. I don’t undervalue having a pinch hitter on the bench. I just don’t see it as a realistic option given the constraints of the roster.
  20. He won’t start that many games this year. He only started 131 in 2017, easily his most productive season offensively in years. 126 starts in 2016, 154 in 2015, 118 in 2014, his first year as a non catcher. IMO 125 starts in 2019 is extremely unlikely. Even if he doesn’t land on the DL, which is pretty likely to happen given his age and injury history. 110 is a more realistic number I think. And therein lies the problem. You have a wasted roster spot for 50 games, almost 1/3 of the season. Some said he can pinch hit. Sure. The Twins have used a pinch hitter in less than half their games this year. And how many of those were “throw away” at bats in blow outs? The kind Mauer wouldn’t get anyway. Point being, the days of having a dangerous pinch hitter lurking are gone in the AL.
  21. Of course, the Twins had an unlimited roster in September of 1987, so carrying Baylor didn’t hinder anything. That won’t be the case in 2019 from late March through August. btw, other than catchers Tom Nieto and Mark Salas, the only position players for the Twins in 1987 that didn’t make the postseason roster were Chris Pittaro and, wait for it, Billy Beane. Flip a coin as to which one might have made the playoff roster instead of Baylor I suppose. Unless the Twins went with 10 pitchers instead. That would likely have been Mike Smithson or possibly Allan Anderson.
  22. I think the days of a regular, set DH are all but over. This year, there will probably be only 3 or 4 guys that will have a qualifying number of at bats as a DH. Increasingly common is using the DH to rest players from the field. That’s only going to increase as pitching staffs increase. I don’t think teams will even consider DH playing time going forward. They will let it take care of itself.
